DATA THEFT ISSUE IN CANVA
INTRODUCTION:
Canva is a graphic design platform founded in 2012 to create presentations, posters,
infographics, social media graphics, and other visual content. Canva uses an inbuilt template
for use, and we can use those templates to create posters and visual content. A drag and drop
interface makes it easier for users to customize templates. Canva is a free platform and offers
paid subscriptions. It has raised around $200 million. Currently, Canva has more than
750,000 users around the world. In June 2020, canva announced a partnership with FedEx
Office. As of June 2020, canva has raised $6 billion.
ETHICAL ISSUE IN CANVA:
On 24th May 2019, Canva has experienced a data breach by anonymous hackers know as
gnosticplayers. The attackers informed ZDNet, a news site for IT Professionals, about the
attack an hour after the attack. Unfortunately, Canva only managed to shut down their servers
and databases after 139 million accounts of the users had been breached. The hackers stole
the details of the users, such as username, password, email address, and location. The
encrypted Passwords of 61 million users have also been stolen. Fortunately, the algorithm of
the encrypted password of canva is pretty strong. As soon as hackers started to decrypt the
password, Canva began to notify the users to change the password through email. In an
update given at the beginning of the year. Canva forcibly changed the password implicated in
the data breach and notified users through email. Fortunately, Canva never stores complete
details of the credit card; therefore, even if the hackers have accessed the files, they could not
carry out the payments. Canva has made several internal adjustments to secure users' data
after the incident. They have improved their systems to provide an extra layer of protection
for the users, working closely with top cyber security consultancy Mandiant and other
partners. Despite these attacks, canva is one of the fastest-growing tech companies. This issue
has also brought to light an essential thing to other businesses and startups: however good
their product might be. If they don't cultivate good practices of cyber security, then they can’t
survive in the field.
