1PRODUCT OVERVIEW AND RATIONALEProject Overview and RationaleThe story book that has been selected by me is based on children which are also a picture bookby Jeanie Baker titled Where the Forest Meets the Sea. The storyline has been established in aforest between the Daintree River and Bloomfield situated in North Queensland Australiafeaturing real people, places and issues. A young boy along with his father visits a forest on aboat however it seemed that the forest once had kangaroos and crocodiles which are no longer inexistence. A hollow tree was discovered by the boy deeper inside the forest. It was believed thaton this tree the Aboriginal children played while hiding inside the empty space of the dark trunkwhich has widows made of twisted roots. The father of the boy after catching the fish lights a firein order to cook it. The boy felt sad thinking about his departure as he wondered that whether theforest will be still there if they returned after some years (Baker, 1989).This book was selected in order to teach the children about the effects of human activities on theenvironment and the extant of Aboriginal activities. The book from the very beginning has beenestablished on the culture of Aboriginal people and environmental sustainability by usingpowerful illustration by recalling the events of past, reflecting the present and looking into thefuture. It is necessary for children to behave as dutiful and law abiding citizens by participatingin increasing sustainability (Australian curriculum assessment and reporting authority, 2012).According to Louv (2005) children are separating themselves from the nature. As opined byEvans (2000) that children are less involved in outdoor activities because of the dearth of regularplaygrounds such as backyards, lanes and empty spaces (Dowdell, Gray, & Malone, 2011).Although this book is suitable for all ages however it is mostly applicable to the age group ofthree to five years.

The communication between individualand natural world has been established when the boy along with his father arrived at the forest ona boat and caught fish from the sea and therefore made fire for the purpose of cooking. The great ideas that has been described in this book includes:1.It discuses regarding a forest having a history of over a hundred million years.2.The forest can be reached with the help of boat.3.Once upon a time the forest was filled with animals like crocodiles and kangaroos.4.The Aboriginal people once inhabited in the forest.5.With the advent of modern amenities the natural resources of the forest are becoming extinct.6.The cultural identification of the Aboriginal people has declined along with the extinction of natural environmental resources. In order to present pre-school project, this story proved to be a great starting point that solelyfocuses on place environment and Aboriginal cultural identification.
