ABSTRACT
leadership is the art of motivating and encouraging a group of people to act toward
accomplishing of common goal. Leadership styles within an organisation plays an important in
influencing employees to work with full dedication and achieve business objectives. Number of
leadership styles will be used by Wick Hill in improving employee's performance and
productivity level. This is a main objective of this dissertation and for accomplishing this
objective different activities have been done by researcher. Introduction is a first activity of
dissertation which was completed by developing research aim/objectives/questions. Literature
review is a second activity of dissertation which have been done by using number of articles,
books, publication research, magazines and many other sources relevant to the current study.
Researcher methodology is third chapter of investigation as it supported researcher in collecting
of reliable information about the topic. For gathering information, quantitative method of
research have been used by researcher. Findings and analysing is another activity which were
completed by researcher by using content analysis. Under this method, researcher have been
created number of themes which helped in analysation of information easily. Discussion and
concussion is another chapter of dissertation which is completely based on primary and
secondary source of data collection. Under primary source, questionnaire have been used and in
case of secondary source, literature review have been followed. Therefore, both sources helped
investigator in analysing of data about the leadership and its impact on performance and
productivity of workers. Conclusion and recommendation chapter helped in identification of
results of study.

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
Overview and Background of the study
Leadership introduces as a process through which business leader can direct, lead,
influence and guide the work of other people towards achievement of specific goals and
objectives in a given situation. This is a ability of a manager or leader to induce the workers to
work with more confidence and zeal (Al Mamun, 2017). According to Keith Davis, leadership
refers to the ability or capability of leader to persuade their subordinates to seek defined goals
enthusiastically. Effective leadership refers as an effective process by which a leader aimed at
enhancing her or his own duties in managing workers, their job ad development capabilities of
leadership in accordance to the goals and requirement of the company. Leadership style is the
approach and manner used by a business leader for providing proper direction, implementing
plans and encouraging people towards accomplishment of business objectives. As observed by
the workers, it includes the sum pattern of implicit and explicit actions which is performed by
their leader or manager.
There are different types of leadership styles such as democratic, autocratic, transactional,
bureaucratic, situational etc. These are main types of leadership styles that have direct impact
over productivity and performance level of employees. For this research project Wick Hill is a
given organisation. It was founded in 1976 and specialise in designing, developing and
producing prepackaged computer software. Company offers a portfolio that includes security,
access, performance, mobile device management, networking, high performance wireless, hosted
solutions, storage and cloud security (Azeez, 2017). In this organisation different number of
employees are working with aim to enhance their performance and productivity level. For
accomplishing this aim, company will used different types of leadership style. As it will help
employees to work with accurate direction and complete them to given deadline.
Problem statement
Performance of employees, which includes executing defined roles, team input, meeting
deadlines and accomplishing departmental goals and objectives. In different organisations such

as Wick Hill, they require some leadership styles such as corporate approaches, laissez-faire
approach, authoritative approaches to leadership. Therefore the problem of this research was to
establish different kind of leadership styles that will have direct impact over productivity and
performance of employees. Thus, leadership is a main part of the employee's performance and
productivity. Without effective leadership an organisation can not motivate, encourage, inspire
and persuade employees to work happily. As it will decrease performance and productivity of
employees as well as company also (Busaibe, 2017).

Rationale of the research
Main rationale behind doing this research is to analysis impact of leadership styles over
productivity and performance of employees. This research is executed because leadership is

main part of an enterprise through effective leadership business managers or leaders can
accomplish their organisational goals. Leadership is also essential for an organisation as it can
enhance their productivity also also impact on employees by improving its performance level.
This research is intended to analyse whether performance of employee is related to the leadership
style which is adopted by the management of an organisation (Dello Russo, 2017).
There are personal and professional reason for conducting research over a topic i.e. the
impact of leadership style on employee's performance and productivity within an organisation. In
personal way, this research help an individual by improving its literature review knowledge, data
collection skill, time management quality, data analysis skill and many other skills relevant to the
study. Along with this, with the assist of this investigation an individual can easily develop their
professional level. As it will help them to understand about the significance of leadership styles
on performance and productivity of employees or persons (Gyanchandani, 2017).
Significance of the study
This research is carried out because leadership is significant and important part of an
organisation. Effective leadership within an organisation is more beneficial as it help them in
motivating employees, creating performance, providing appropriate guidance, building morale
and also building work environment. These are main importance of leadership which will help an
enterprise in development of its growth and success in marketplace. This will also support Wick
Hill to improve productivity and performance level of their employees (Hermawati, 2017).

is completely based on research methods. This part of the dissertation includes different methods
such as primary and secondary method of data collection, qualitative or quantitative research,
research philosophy, research approach, research instruments etc. These are useful methods as it
will support researcher in gathering of appropriate and relevant information about the selected
topic (Ibrahim, 2017).
Chapter 4: Findings and analysis: This is a fourth activity of dissertation which is more
important for researcher. As it help them in interpretation of information or data about the topic.
Under this section of research, frequency table will be made which help investigator in
identification of agreed and unagreed respondents regarding the current study. Along with this,
in this chapter, different number of tables and graphs will be made which is completed based on
frequency table.
Chapter 5: Discussion: This is a fifth chapter of dissertation which assist investigator in
proper identification of primary and secondary information. Literature review will be used for
discussing secondary information about the topic. On the other hand, questionnaire help
researcher in providing primary data or information regarding the impact of leadership on
performance and productivity of employees (Indrasari, 2017).
Chapter 6: Conclusion and Recommendation: This refers to a last chapter or task of
dissertation which support reader in determination of information about the research objectives

employees and encourage them to work hard in order to achieve their goal. Leaders are more
capable to know as well as understand employee's mindset and by adopting effective leadership
style, they influence the behaviour as well as increase morale of workforce in positive manner.
Therefore, leaders within a company are considered as the backbone of organisation because
they have the ability to lead organisation towards high growth and success. They assists in
solving conflicts or misunderstanding between lower management and upper management.
Thus, effective leadership is required by each and every organisation to increase motivation
among employees as well as maximise their productivity and performance. Main purpose and
objective of leadership is to attain the vision of company by developing as well as managing

Sampling techniques: Sample within an investigation s introduce as a group of people,
items or objects that are taken by researcher from a larger population for measurements. There
are two techniques of sampling namely probability and non-probability. Under probability
sampling, subjects of the larger population get an equal change to be recruited as a representative
sample. In case of non-probability sampling, it does not relies on the subjective opinion of the

Research Limitation: The main limitation of research is the time period for completion
of research activity and the ability of investigator to include a larger sample size for the primary
study. For the time of research completion, investigator was restricted to the timing guidelines
for completion of investigation (Silverman, 2016). Along with this, there are also some
limitations within an investigation such as formulation of research aims and objectives,
execution of data collection method, lack of previous information in the research area, scope of
discussion etc. These are main limitations that will be going to faced by researcher while doing
current dissertation.
Research reliability and validity: This is a significant part of methodology as it help
researcher in identification of research reliability and validity. Research reliability is based on
execution of test instrument or technique which is questionnaire. This instrument will help
investigator in understanding of respondents opinion about the current topic. Questionnaire is
more useful instrument for researcher as it support them by providing reliable data regarding the
leadership styles and its effects on employee's productivity and performance (Scotland, 2012).
The questionnaire is also considered as a part of validity as it will also give valid data or
information about leadership and its impact on employee's productivity and performance.
Therefore, questionnaire is an important test instrument will support researcher in gathering of
reliable and valid information about the current study or topic.

Findings and analysis of the study is depend on questionnaire as it support researcher in
collection and analysation of quantitative information about the leadership. Content analysis will
be applied for finding and analysing quantitative data or information regarding the impact of
leadership on performance and productivity of employees within an organisation (Wiek and
Lang, 2016). Under this section of dissertation, number of graphs and tables will be made which

CHAPTER 5: DISCUSSION
This is an important and significant part of the dissertation which will be beneficial for
researcher to complete research in effective manner. Discussion will be based on primary and
secondary source of data collection. Questionnaire will be used by discussing primary
information in an appropriate and systematic manner. Literature review is a source of secondary
data which will be useful for researcher to discuss information in detailed manner (Koohang,
2017).
Discussion on the basis of primary source i.e. questionnaire
Theme 1: Main role of leadership
Interpretation: In business organisation, leadership play a crucial role because it focus on
making workers able by leading and providing them proper direction at the time of performing
organizational activities. With the assistance of this, leader can easily motivate employees to attain
their targets in systematic manner. In this regards, 20 respondents think that the main role of
leadership is to inspire trust among team members so that they can share their views and ideas at the
time of performing project activities. Along with this, 10 people give their opinion towards this
theme is that leadership help in creating a clear vision that support workers in understanding about
what job activities they actually do at workplace. Furthermore, 11 respondents said that effective
leadership support leader in executing strategy that assist or guide all the workers to attain long term
goals and objectives in stipulated time frame. On the other hand, remaining 9 people think that role
of leadership in company is coach potential to employees with the aim of making them capable to
execute their task and activities in systematic way.
Theme 2: Types of factor that has more affect on leadership
Interpretation: Leadership is consider as an effective activity as it influence and encourage
workers to do their best to attain their targets in stipulated time frame. Along with this, various
factors are there which also affect the leadership activities at workplace. This can be improve the
overall performance of company and its workers as well. In context of this, 15 out of 50 participants
think that organisational resources are the crucial factor that influence the leadership and its
procedures as well. Due to organisational factors leaders lead their workers in order to improve their
abilities to do their best. Apart from this, 19 respondents give their views that employees
involvement is also affect on leadership activities in which leader of company influence employees
to take participate within the decision making activities that support them in improving their

performance level. Furthermore, rest of 16 people said that technological factor is play a major role
in business and on leadership as change in technologies are also affect the working abilities of
workers. In this, leader focus on making employees able to accept all the changes at workplace.
Theme 3: Benefits gained by organisation through leadership
Interpretation: From the above mentioned graph it has been evaluated that there are various
benefits of leadership for business organisation as it help in enhancing overall performance of
company and its workers more effective. In this regards, 16 out of 50 people think that leadership
help in enhancing employees productivity that directly supports in attaining all the set goals and
objectives of business organisation. Apart from this, 19 people give their views that one of the main
advantage of leadership is that it assist in directing work and also influence or encourage workers to
perform their task in systematic manner. With the assistance of this, company can easily enhance
their performance. On the other side, remaining participants give their views that leadership also
support in retaining employees by providing them better motivation and encouragement towards the
company goals and objectives. This will directly contributes in developing positive and competitive
brand image at market place.
Theme 4: Effectiveness of leadership for employees
Interpretation: Leadership is an activity in which leader play a crucial role in directing and
guiding their team members in order to make them more productive and capable. In this, leader
influence employee to take initiate for accomplishing their set targets in stipulated time frame. With
the help of this, company easily enhance workers productivity as they are always ready to put their
best efforts at working activities with the aim of reducing the possibilities of arising issues at
workplace. In this context, 40 people think that leadership is effective for workers because it
contributes in building confidence in employees and at the same time also create a positive working
environment. This will directly support in conducive to higher productivity. Furthermore, it also
develop interest and trust in their team members by providing them better direction at the time of
performing working activities. It may help in improving the performance and productivity of
workers at workplace. On the other side, remaining 10 participants are not favour with this
statement.
Theme 5: Usefulness of specific type of leadership style
Interpretation: As per above mentioned graph it can be evaluated that there are different
type of leadership styles used by company in order to improve workers performance at workplace.

In this regards, 10 out of 50 people think that autocratic is an effective leadership style in which
leader takes all the decision and follow by its team members. Along with this, 12 participants think
that democratic is an appropriate style of leadership in which leader includes all the workers while
taking decision to take their views to take right decisions. This will motivate workers at workplace.
Furthermore, 13 respondents think that situational is suitable style that used by leader as per
situation occur at workplace. On the other side, rest of 15 participants give their views that
transformational leadership style is best in which leader encourage, inspire and motivate employees
to create change. This will improve their productivity level that shape the future success of business
organisation.
Theme 6: Effectiveness of transformational leadership
Interpretation: As per above discussed graph it has been evaluated that transformation
leadership is an effective style in which leader of company focus on motivating, encouraging and
inspiring employees to create innovative change within the organisation with the aim of attaining
future success a market place. Along with this, leader also identify needed changes at workplace and
also create vision to guide the chances by inspiration and executing activities. With the assistance of
this company can increase productivity level of company and its workers and make them loyal
towards the organisational goals and objectives. In context of this, 35 out of 50 participants think
that, transformational leadership is suitable for company in motivating their employees. It may
support in retaining workers for longer period of time. On the other side, remaining 10 people are
not agree with this statement. As they think that some time it put negative impact on employees
performance because of overlooking of reality wherein employees look deeper into the situation at
working area that directly affect their performance in negative manner.
Theme 7: Advantages of transformational leadership style
Interpretation: This graph has been interpreted advantages of transformational leadership
style within an organisation. Majority of employees have idea as transformation leadership style is
more essential for an enterprise by lowering the turnover cost. Transformational leader of company
tend to retain workers more often then other types of leadership. This type of leader plays an
essential role in satisfying personal as well as organisation needs in more appropriate manner. 15
out of 50 employees of Wick hill have opinion as transformation style of leadership helped an
organisation in encouragement of ongoing learning and development. Transformational type of
leader work toward accomplishing higher efficiency for themselves and for their employees. This

kind of leadership style is essential at having workers engage with the process of learning for this
position. Remaining 16 employees of company have view as transformational leaders are more
capable to create enthusiasm in their ranks of employees because of their own enthusiasm. As it
leads to higher level of team morale and productivity, and also lower employees turnover. As these
are main advantages that are gained by company by following transformational leadership style.
Theme 8: Disadvantages of transformational leadership style
Interpretation: From the above mentioned graph it has been interpreted disadvantages of
transformational leadership style faced by an organisation. 19 out of 50 employees of Wick hill
have opinion as sometimes transformational leadership provide many negative outcome. They not
work towards achievement of long term goals and objectives of an organisation which will
negatively effect on business success. 16 employees of an enterprise have view as transformational
leader can stimulate their team members to attain success and growth. They do a higher level of job
of encouraging or influencing their employees to work with each other to attain strategic goals and
objectives. If advanced levels of sustained productivity are needed to attain the vision or objective in
question, however, or there are undue deadlines within place, then it can track to burnout happen
within the followers. Remaining 15 respondents have opinion as transformational leaders follow
their characteristic approach in order to serve their role and responsibility for their employees and
their organisation also. There are some risks or uncertainty that are mainly accepted by those
peoples whose are following this style of leadership to create change and find innovation.
Theme 9: Positive or negative impact of leadership on productivity level of employees
Interpretation: From the above given information, it has been interpreted positive or
negative impact of leadership on productivity level of employees. Most of the people have idea
as leadership has positive impact on performance and productivity. 30 out of 50 employees
within an organisation have opinion as leadership has positive impact. There are different
advantages of leadership that help employees in different ways such as providing guidance,
motivating, initiating action, creating morale, creating confidence, building work environment
and coordinating. These are main advantages and benefits of leadership which will be beneficial
for employees by improving its performance and productivity level. 5 respondents have idea as
leadership has negative impact on employee's performance as well as productivity also. They
said as sometimes leadership takes time away from performing any type of task, it fosters a clash

of personalities etc. Remaining 15 respondents have idea as leadership impact on employee's
productivity and performance in both positive and negative manner.
Theme 10: Relationship between leadership style and employees productivity Interpretation:
From the above stated table, it has been interpreted relationship between leadership style and
employees productivity in term of Wick hills. Most of the respondents have idea as leadership
has positive relationship with employees productivity. There are number of ways that proof as
leadership has positive relationship with productivity of employees. It includes: improved ability
to succeed under pressure, enhanced productivity level, increased emotional intelligence, growth
in confidence in team, increased awareness of diversity, improved communication and listening
skills etc. These benefits proof as leadership positively influence on productivity of workers.
Remaining 5 respondents have idea as leadership has negative relationship with employees
productivity. They said as there are some drawbacks of leadership that proof as there is negative
relationship between leadership and employees productivity. It include worker resentment,
paralysis when the business manager is not available and has limited creativity since only single
person gives ideas.
Theme 11: Importance of leadership style for employees
Interpretation: According to the above mentioned data it has been interpreted
significance of leadership style for workers within an organisation. 18 out of 50 respondents
have opinion as leadership help employees in boosting confidence level of workers. 17
employees have idea as help in guiding work. Remaining 15 employees have opinion as it shape
in skill. All these are main advantages of leadership which will be beneficial for the success of
workers. Therefore leadership is more beneficial and important for employees to maintain long
lasting relationship with an organisation and also gain better advantages for their future growth
and development.
Theme 12: Approach of leadership that help Wick hill in betterment of its productivity and
employee's performance
Interpretation: From the above data, it has been interpreted approach of leadership that
help Wick hill in improvement of productivity and performance of their employees. 17 out of 50
employees have opinion as it will support employee in evaluation of its performance. It will
support workers in development of its growth and success. 18 employees of Wick hill have
opinion as it will support in directing work which will further assist in accomplishment of long

term goals and objectives within given time duration. Remaining 15 employees have opinion as
leadership will help employees in appreciating work. These are main approaches used by
company as it will help them to retain employees for long time and gain better outcomes within
given time period.
Theme 13: Importance of leadership style in retention of employees for long time
Interpretation: From the above given information or data, it has been concluded Importance
of leadership style in retention of employees for long time. Most of the people are agreed as style of
leadership is more essential for company in retention of workers long time. Leader have different
types of style which will be beneficial for them to provide appropriate guidelines to workers and
also motivate them towards achievement of long term goals and objectives. Remaining 10
respondents not have any idea about the same.
CHAPTER 6: REFLECTION AND ALTERNATIVE RESEARCH
METHODOLOGY
Reflection: I am glad that I get an opportunity to perform research over a topic i.e. “An
investigation into the impact of leadership style on employee's performance and productivity
within an organisation”. A study on Wick Hill. This is an interesting topic which will be
beneficial for me by improving my literature review skill, time management quality, data
collection skill and data analysis quality. In order to gather information about the impact of
leadership styles on employee's productivity and performance, I used questionnaire as an
effective instrument of primary data collection. This instrument or technique helped me by
providing valid and reliable data about the current study. Number of methodologies have been
used by me when I need data in form of quantitative. This methodologies include deductive
approach, questionnaire, positivism philosophy, cross-sectional time horizon etc. These methods
helped me by providing quantitative and useful information.
This study is more essential for me by improving my understanding about the leadership
styles and its importance for employees in improvement of their productivity and performance.
Apart from this, dunging this investigation I also faced some challenges such as lack of time,
improper and unethical behaviour of respondents, lack of resources, insufficient amount of
capital and many other. These challenges have direct and negative impact on mine while

completing of each research activity in systematic manner. In order to overcome these issues or
challenges, I was followed principles of research ethics. As it helped me in completion of
dissertation in ethical manner. In order to overcome impact of time, I used cross-sectional time
horizon and Gantt chart as it supported me by providing accurate information about the starting
and ending data of dissertation.
Alternative research methodology
Research methodology is important and essential section of dissertation as it support in
collection of valid information about the specific area of study. Within an investigation,
questionnaire have been used as an instrument of primary data collection. As this technique was
more suitable and effective for researcher while collection of quantitative data. If researcher get
any chance to conduct research over leadership style, there is an alternative research
methodology namely Interview. As it is also consider as a method or technique of primary data
collection. This method will be supported researcher while they require qualitative data. Under
this method, number of open-ended questions could be prepare as it support researcher in
identification of respondents opinion about the study in accurate manner (Pyc, 2017).
Discussion of findings
From the secondary research done on the need of leadership within an organisation, it has
been analysed that the major elements for which the practice of leading is required in a
workplace is the challenges which are faced by them. It has been seen from the articles that the
major goals of an organisation to operate are to resolve the issues and tackle the competition
which they face in the industry (Maamari, 2017). For these aims, it is important to have a trained
personnel who can lead and provide direction to the employees so that these goals can be
effectively attained.
The articles which were reviewed stated that the practice of leadership does not only
benefits an organisation, but, it also limits the organisation in certain ways. These limitations are
the excess training, skills and costing needed for implementing the effective leadership which
restricts few firms from being lead appropriately (Malik, 2017). The articles which were
reviewed also summarises few needs which are considered as most important and these needs are
ensuring employee engagement, developing and communication strategic directions and
motivating employees to be inclined towards organisational goals. Besides this, few articles also

emphasised that leadership is a continuous process which is not desired but is essentially needed
in a workplace.
According to the secondary research completed on the connection between styles of
leadership and employee's productivity, it has been discussed that leadership style has positive
relationship with employee's productivity (Mikkelson, 2017). Number of leadership styles such
as authoritarian, transformational, participative etc. are useful for company as it helped them in
retaining worker for longer time period. Different number of articles used for analysing
relationship between employee productivity and leadership styles. As some articles summarise or
discuses importance of leadership styles in improvement of workers performance and
productivity within an organisation.
Business leader of company played a crucial role while communication of all necessary
information to their team members in effective manner, as by having accurate communication,
workers of an organisation completed their work within set deadline and easily. Managing
expectation of workers is also consider effective interrelationship between style of leadership and
employee productivity level. It includes ensuring employees job satisfaction by providing them
with incentives and rewards. Along with this, leadership styles is also supported an organisation
to motivate their workers which turn to assist employees by improving its performance and also
productivity level (Mitonga-Monga, 2017). The styles of leadership are more effective in
changing working ability of employees and help them by giving correct direction to do business
operations, so as to accomplish higher growth and longer success within marketplace. Thus, it
can be said that styles of leadership are more effective in encouraging workers to execute their
quality within an organisational practices as well as reach to goals and objectives.
From the secondary investigation done on the leadership style and its effect on

styles have their own impact on employees performance and productivity also (Nielsen, 2017)

Conclusion
From the above findings and discussion it has been concluded that leadership style plays
an important role within an organisation. Majority of respondents are agreed as leadership style
is important and significance within an organisation. As it helped company to motivate and
influence their employees towards achievement of goals and objectives. Leadership is important
part of business and it will lead to increase the performance of employees. Through effective and
efficient leadership style company will be able to encourage and influence the skills or
capabilities of employees. By having proper leadership style also supported workers by
improving its productivity and performance level. Leadership in an enterprise plays different
types of roles such as inspire trust, create vision, coach potential and execute strategy. These are
major role played by business leader which helped an organisation by retaining employees for
longer time period. Along with this, number of factors also used by company that have direct
affect on leadership such as organisational resources, technological factor and employee
involvement. Therefore, with the help of leadership company gained different benefits which are
retention of employees, direction of work and enhancement of productivity. As it proofed
leadership has to impacted on productivity level of employees.
Different number of leadership styles used by company such as autocratic, democratic,
situational and transformational. These are more suitable style of leadership which is essential
for company to improve employee's performance and productivity easily. Leadership style play
significant role in encouraging employees as well as enhancing performance in order to attain
desired goals. It is very important for organisation to consider leadership style which is effective
and accurate as per the need of business. Among these types of leadership styles, transformation
style of leadership is more appropriate for company as it lower cost of turnover, encourages
ongoing learning and development and create enthusiasm. Thus, leadership is important part for
the growth and success of company and also helped them to boost employees confidence,
sharpening employees skill and guiding their work. Apart from this, different approaches of
leadership have also applied by company that have direct influence on performance and

Recommendation
From the above mentioned findings it have been recommended that leadership is useful
and valuable for an organisation as it will help them by increasing productivity and performance
level of their employees. It is suggested that feedback on regular basis must be managed on how
workers are performing their activity as it will support is executing contiguous corrections where
errors were made. In addition, business leader of Wick Hill must always communicate the
important information and necessary work requirement to workers and on time duration in order
for them to do planning and execution within given time period.
It is also suggested that managers of Wick Hill must adopt a new style of leadership that
is being much more transactional leadership style than democratic as it gives a sign of either a
punishment or reward when activity are not well executed. With this type of leadership style
workers within Wick Hill could improve their performance and productivity, while managing
rewards and sanctions. This style will also support an organisation to motivate and encourage
their employees as they work with full dedication and accomplish better results and outputs for
business growth and success.

Further investigation could be planned or executed on; the role played by workers within
an enterprise and the impact over the productivity and performance of company. The impact of
leader's motivation on employees perception, the role of democratic style of leadership on
employees performance. The effectiveness of transformational and transaction leadership style
over performance of workers (Rita, 2018). These are some effective topics related with
leadership which will be beneficial for researcher in identification of information about the
impact of leadership styles on worker's performance as well as productivity level. As it will
further support an organisation in achievement of its long term goals and objectives.
