Advantages and disadvantages of using social media for recruitment
Social media allows all recruiters to spread important information about job vacancies
and the associated organisation so that candidates could receive such information (Burns, 2021).
The method of social media is considered as the best one for doing recruitment because through
this recruiters could easily interact with talented people quickly and in a better way. There are
several advantages and disadvantages of using social media for recruitment and it is further
explained below: -
Advantages: -
Immediate response: - With the help of social media method, an immediate response is
attained and the main reason behind this is the share feature as it helps in increasing the reach of
job posts and is available to maximum number of people (Abugre and Boachie-Ansah, 2021). It
is an effective thing because by social media recruitment, less time gets consumed. By looking at
the present scenario, almost all individuals remain active on social media especially the youth
generation. So, it becomes a great opportunity for people who want to apply for jobs in different
sectors.
High quality candidates: - Another benefit associated with the method of using social
media to do recruitment is that companies could easily search for highly qualified candidates
(Turnbull and Turnbull, 2020). The organisation gets a chance to choose fresh talented people
who are acquired with innovative skills and abilities. Through the usage of social media for
12
Document Page
doing recruitment, company is able to increase their productivity level also as candidates would
get selected from across the world.
Increment in job visibility: - Social media has always been considered as a fabulous
platform to determine individuals who are looking for jobs. As there are several job portals and
almost all individuals look for vacancies on social media aspect, so it becomes advantageous for
the business organisation to increase their job visibility across the globe.
Better employer brand awareness: - To recruit candidates from social media, it not helps
in finding out talented people but also enhances the visibility of company. Business organisations
advertise the job vacancies on social media websites, a level of trust gets developed and
company enables a good social media presence.
Disadvantages: -
Attracts bad candidates: - To do recruitment through social media, both positive and
negative things could happen (Contreras and et.al, 2020). Though social media is considered as
an effective method for finding out talented people but in certain situations there are many
candidates who are not interested in finding out the job but create the profile. Due to this,
company has to suffer lot of complications also.
Open platform: - Social media has always been an open platform which is the biggest
disadvantage for doing recruitment. If an individual applies for any job, then all other people
could also see where they have applied. Due to this, a negative impact gets created because
companies may feel that if the candidate has applied to so many jobs, then they could leave the
organisation at any point of time.
Not all people uses social media: - It is a disadvantage because company would be able
to reach only those people who are active on social media job portals. There are many other
talented people also which are not being active on social media due to this, it is not considered as
a good way to do recruitment.
For example, LinkedIn is one of the most efficient employment website which allows all
recruiters to reach out to active candidates (Salk, Thoma and Choukas-Bradley, 2020). The
main benefit associated with LinkedIn is that individuals with perfect qualifications and
experience are identified but at the same point of time, by contacting best and qualified
candidates, there is no surety that they all could be interested in finding the jobs.
13
Document Page
General justification
With respect to the information regarding benefits and drawbacks of using social media
for recruitment, it has been justified that in certain situations, social media is good also in order
to find out the jobs but at the same point of time this process of recruitment is negative too.
There are many benefits like immediate response is attained through which time gets saved for
both students as well as companies (Mecham and et.al, 2021). As the job vacancy gets posted on
websites, immediate response is given by candidates. Besides this, there are several drawbacks
also like social media is an open platform due to which full information regarding candidates
could be seen by other people also which is not beneficial for them.
Specific justification
By taking the example of LinkedIn, it is considered as a good job website but there are
many negative things also which are associated with it. On LinkedIn, there are hundreds of
individuals who applies for the job through which qualified candidates are able to find out but
there are many candidates who just make the profile but are not interested to do jobs due to this,
company's time gets wasted while recruiting the candidates.
CONCLUSION
From the above information, it has been concluded that by using social media for doing
recruitment is an effective way to find out highly qualified people for the company. There are
several benefits associated with it increase in job visibility but there are certain disadvantages
also like attracting bad candidates and so on. There are several recruitment websites like
LinkedIn which is considered as one of the most best job portal. It is both good and bad for
candidates and company in order to do recruitment.
