In Australia, there are specific standards for practicing as Registered Nurses (RNs), as
they play a significant role in prevention, cure, and supporting the health recovery of
individuals. RNs work in association with individuals, their families and community with
regard to therapeutic and professional aspects (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia,
2016). RNs are responsible for performing in accordance with the “Nursing and Midwifery
Board of Australia” (NMBA) and are required to follow “Registered Nurse Standards for
Practice (2016)” along with the “Code of Conduct for Nurses” (2018). The compliance with
the RN standards under NMBA and Code of Conduct for Nurses is essential for the nurses. In
this case study, it will be discussed, if Mary is following the set standards and Code of
Conduct established for RNs and meeting the standards of NMBA with regard to safety and
quality care to the residential aged patients (ANMAC, 2018).
Mary is a RN, working in residential aged care and her colleagues have noticed that
she is not taking good care of her patients during her shifts. Her colleagues have raised the
issue with their manager. The practices of RNs are considered as person-centred and
evidence-based through precautionary, therapeutic, sympathetic and such other elements. As
per the Standard 1: Thinks critically and analyses nursing practice of the standards defined
for RNs, they have to utilize various thinking strategies for making decisions related to the
patients as well as in providing them with safe and quality nursing practice. Under this
standard, it is the responsibility of Mary being a RN that she should follow safe and quality
practice. If the complaints made by her colleagues are true to its sense, she is not doing his
job with perfection (Mather, Gale, & Cummings, 2017). She is working in a residential aged
care where, aged and disabled patients rely on her care. If she is not performing her duties
and responsibilities with dedication, she is in non-compliance with the standards of NMBA
(AHPRA, 2017). She needs to work responsibly to provide proper care to the patients and
