Executive Summary
The success of a procurement project is greatly dependent on the
procurement method involved. The different procurement methods
employed in the contrition industry have their own distinguishing features,
pros, cons and the ways in which they affect the stakeholders. Nevertheless,
the choice of a procurement method depends on the client’s choice, the
resources available, the amount of time the project should consume, the
complexity or simplicity of the project and the quality of work the client
anticipates.
Introduction
The process of procurement promotes the ease of obtaining resources and
materials for a construction project. Different procurement methods are
employed to effectively execute a project (Oyegoke, Dickinson, Khalfan,
McDermott, and Rowlinson, 2009). The purpose of the paper is to present the
conventional and modern procurement methods in the construction industry,
stating their advantages, disadvantages, characteristics and how they
impact stakeholders.
Conventional Procurement
Conventional procurement is a method of procurement that has been
existing in the construction industry for a very long period of time
(Sethuraman, Perera, and Sumanarathna, 2016). The use of conventional

procurement in the construction industry began with the emergence of
independent client consultants and general firms of contracting (Ruparathna
and Hewage, 2015). The conventional method illustrated is the traditional
procurement method
Traditional Procurement Method
Traditional procurement route is a type of procurement where the design
activities are separated from the construction activities. The client hires an
architect, a consultant or a contractor distinctly (Vilasini, Neitzert, and
Rotimi, 2011). The architect or the consultant is employed to produce the
design and the related specifications the requirements of the client while the
contractor is hired to contract the building. The design has to be completed
before the construction work is handed to the contractor. The contractor
given charge of the contracting activity is determined through a tendering
process (Chin, 2010). In the tendering process, client provide the tendering
document together with the design and specifications provided in the initial
stage to the interested competing contractors. The contractors in turn fill the
document with all the necessities required to complete the cost including the
price of the project and submit the filled document back to the contractor.
The contractor who bids for the project with the lowest cost of project
execution is awarded the tender and assumes the responsibilities related
construction (Chan, 2011).
