ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my supervisor “SUPERVISOR’S NAME”
and assessor “ASSESSOR’S NAME” who has guided me and corrected me throughout
the way of developing this project. I am also very thankful to the Head and faculty
members of the Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering for supplying
the source of information and resources for this work. I would also like to thank my peers
and friends who have always encouraged me and provided me lots of suggestions to
execute this project wor properly. I do not have enough word to thank the
Ophthalmologist “SPECIALIST’S NAME” who has consistently supported me and
helped me out to complete the testing phase of the software development. Without his
support and cooperation I could not develop this MATLAB based software. I am also
very thankful to my parents and family members who have continuously encouraged me
to pursue my dream.

ABSTRACT (16 pt + Bold)
Diabetic retinopathy also known as diabetic eye is a medical condition which occurs as
an effect of severe level diabetes mellitus. Irrespective of the type of Diabetic
Retinopathy (DR) stage, early detection is very essential, where with a help of AI aided
digital system the detection process can be easier. The Purpose of this paper is to develop
a MATLAB base system that can analyse a fundus image taken through a Smartphone
from patient’s eye to detect the DR at very early stage. The aim was to develop a
MATLAB based AI aided system that can clearly segment fundus image into
Microaneurysm, Exudates, Haemorrhage and Optical Disk and detect if the condition of
the retinal is in PDR or NPDR stage.
For this diabetic retinopathy the deep learning AI method has been used to allow the
MATLAB base system to learn form a group of reference images to learn a pattern of
pixel positioning to detect exudates, haemorrhage, disk and other factors associated with
DR. For this system development, the V model software development framework has
been used where both black-box and white box testing was done in testing phase. The
accuracy and the performance of this DR detection system have been tested through
reviewing the results by an professional ophthalmologist.
The developed system is approximately 80% accurate in detecting NPDR and PDR as
well as segmentation of fundus image. The total time required for this software is less
that than 40 seconds are excluding the image taking and data transferring time. From the
results found after testing the software it has been concluded there are still many
opportunities to improve the efficiency and accuracy of the system. It has been found that
adding tutorial or user guide to the interface and using larger database of reference
images for AI will improve the quality of this DR detection system.
