PROJECT FOR DEVELOPMENT OF
COMMUNICATION IN HEALTHCARE

introduction to the problem
• Patients had huge number of complaints
• neither the nurses communicated with them entirely nor they answered
their queries properly
• their anxiety affected their health

• Power struggles among the nurses

Background for the project
• improper service delivery of the nursing professionals
• regular conflicts among nurses
• research was needed to find out the root cause
• blames games as well as conflicts between the nurses
• ineffective communication had been the major reason
• nurses were not aware of the importance of therapeutic communication
• relationship between the junior and senior nurses suffered due to power
struggles
• nurses suffered from complexes
• trust was completely absent among

NEED FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A PROJECT.

Statement of the project:
• helping the nursing professionals to develop the knowledge of therapeutic
communication
• to help the professionals overcome the power struggles and thereby
develop bond and trust through effective communication

Significance of the project:
• to develop a culture within the workplace that would help to maintain
smooth working environment among the nurses
• trust each other and develop a strong bond among them through effective
communication
• to work as a team (Weiner, 2012)
• learn effective skills that are needed to ensure effective communication
with the patients
• to learn the different ways by which they should communicate with the
patients
• to understand the modification required in their skills and practice

Description of the setting:
• conference rooms would be turned into training room
• Each of the department would have to send the nurses twice a week for
the training sessions
• training session on the other day would be about the disadvantage of
power struggle and affects both patient life and their nursing career
(Taylor et al., 2013)
• seminars would be arranged in the community auditorium four times a
month
• policy preparation would be done in the conference rooms only where the
higher authorities would be coming together and discussing their
concerns

Description of the implementation of the
project:
• training session be arranged in the healthcare centre twice a week
• Trainers would be appointed
• help the nursing professionals to understand the important of therapeutic
communication
• helping them to develop their communication skills
• arrangements of weekly seminars where experienced nurses would come as
speakers and would discuss their experiences
• training sessions would be mainly focused on teaching the importance of trust
and bond
• to overcome power struggle and help nurses to communicate effectively
irrespective of their positions are
• Effective feedback meetings to provide constructive feedback
• shared governance model
• develop policies where the organisation for better organisational culture

Description of response or result
• evaluate the result effectively, a committee needs to be set up
• developing questionnaires for the patient where the patients would be
depicting their feelings on the communication skills of the nurses
• would help to understand whether the training sessions conducted by the
trainers are helping in meeting the objective
• set of questionnaire would help to develop an understanding of the
feelings of the nurses on the power struggle, the bonds
• response would be helpful to understand whether the training sessions
had been successful in modifying the thinking procedure of the nurses
• feedback meetings would be observed by the committee members as that
would help them to understand whether the nurses re being able to
engage in transparent constructive feedback exchange

Description of factors influencing the
implementation of the project:
• organisation was losing the trust of the service users as they were not
getting high quality care service
• word of mouth publicity would have resulted them to lose other potential
service users
• to ensure effective profit and business and at the same time, such projects
often become necessary not only to ensure best care quality to patients
(Sweeney et al., 2016)
• to maintain brand reputation and ensure best profitability

Implications for nursing practice:
• nurses would be able to establish therapeutic relationship with the patients
• nurses would be empathetic and compassionate
• this would make the patients feel that the professionals have genuine
concerns for them
• patients to develop trust on them for which they tend to adhere with the
interventions
• reduces anxiety and fear of the patients (Pazargadi et al., 2016)
• develop the capability to get informed consent of the patients easily
• maintain autonomy and dignity of the patients
• Overcoming of power struggle and effective transparent constructive
communication between the junior and senior nurses
• overcome any confusion they face while providing medication, get help in
busy shifts, share work burden

Implications for future projects:
• the most important parts of communication is cultural competence
• have to handle patients from diverse backgrounds
• future projects would mainly be established to develop knowledge about culturally
competent communication in the patients

Conclusion and recommendations:
• patients had to go through numerous suffering due to improper
communication skills of the nurses with them and with their colleagues
(Alaskan et al., 2012)
• projects would be established that would help the nurses to develop
communication skills
• recommendations would mainly comprise of establishment of training
sessions, effective feedback meetings, seminars of nursing stalwarts,
effective policy development for modification of organisational culture
