2PROJECT MANAGEMENT
1. Introduction
Badewi (2016) stated that the Project Management Methodology (PMM) is set of
project guidelines as well as procedures to manage the project. Selection of the PMM defines
how to work as well as communicate in the construction projects. As the selected industry for
this investigation study is construction, therefore there are three productive and creative
methods used such as waterfall, lean and agile methodology. Agile methodology is best
suited for construction projects due to its iterative as well as incremental. It is a method
where demands as well as solutions are evolved throughout collaborative determinations to
self-organizing as well as cross functional team. Fewings and Henjewele (2019) discussed
that lean methodology is promoted to maximize values of construction clients, while
reduction of construction wastes. It aims to build value for clients by means of few resources.
According to Kerzner (2019), waterfall method is design approach where development flows
in down towards one commands.
2. Research questions
The research questions based on which entire thesis work carried out are:
1) Did the project management methodology improve effectiveness of the construction
project performance?
2) Is the complexity of project helped by the Project Manager determining suitable PMM
in construction projects?
3) Are decision making and problem solving factors determined the best project
management methodology?

3. Background and context
In the construction industry, unforeseen project delays, momentous factors, budget
complications and others are common issues in the planned activities. In order to counter
those unforeseen issues, the construction professionals are coming up with solutions of PMM.
The approaches are modified as well as customized for the applications in the industry (May,
Hwa, & Spowage, 2017). The selected three methodologies reviewed in the literature section
are waterfall, lean and agile methods.
The research study is based on construction project management context, a process to
manage the construction projects. It means to achieve incomes over project lifecycle through
using various PMM to control cost in addition to period at the time of working in
construction projects. For this research study, the selected Australian construction industry is
ADCO Constructions. The company provides construction services in Australian and the
company offers services in design specialities, development of solutions for buildings plus
warehouses, renovation, refurbishment and construction management (Adcoconstruct, 2019).
Construction PM can communicate with various disciplines in lifetime of the project from its
architecture to engineering of city planning. The principles based on which this context is
working are initiation, define as well as plan project and then build the construction plan.
4. Aims and objectives
The aim of this proposal study is to compare of various methodologies in project
management based on advantages on project planning. In order to meet with mentioned
research aim, following are objectives identified as:
To compare project management methodologies used in construction projects.
To determine benefits and importance of PMM in the construction projects.
To identify process groups and knowledge areas in the project management field.

5. Literature review
According to Meredith, Mantel Jr, & Shafer (2017), the construction PMM is referred
to planned method of the construction and take account of the contractual needs of
construction projects. It is also defined as method to take account of construction risks along
with opportunities. The methods are included permanent works and services needed to finish
the construction and building works. The purpose of construction PMM is to control over
construction process through making efficient project decisions as well as solve construction
related problems. In this section, there is analyzing of three PMM by evaluating them through
their benefits in the project plan.
Waterfall methodology: Nicholas and Steyn (2017) mentioned that this method
reproduces normal workflow process in the construction project as it is a technique in steady
succession. Each of the levels is happened in lonely way and the standard is finished, the
group moves straight to next level in consecutive order. The benefits of this method are that it
provides clear sign of construction and building compliances, allowed this method to grow in
future projects. Al-Zwainy, Mohammed and Raheem (2016) argued that the client gets clear
view of whatever will originate around in portion to implement the plan. It will help to
determine cost of the construction project as well as time period required to execute the plan.
Therefore, this PMM provides perfect understanding of the project planning.
Lean construction management: Ranasinghe, Gharaie and Gilbert (2018) discussed
that for increasing flow of the construction site, the lean construction management is
emphasized to arrange the supply chain. Due to this there is no possibility of breaks at the
time of production. The construction manager is responsible to design facilities along with
delivery of project process. In order to identify waste areas, the manager is mainly focused to
make improvement in project processes. Gupta and Thakkar (2018) mentioned that the
manager balances pulls as well as pushes based on project demands. The benefits of this

5PROJECT MANAGEMENT
method is that all project aspects are to be monitored and improved using the construction
software. Manages are encouraged to perform face-to-face interaction to eliminate waste
from the construction project. It defines value of the customers as well as takes iterative
approach to eliminate waste in construction processes.
Agile methodology: This selected approach is pointed to feasible method to send the
construction project planning. According to Ko and Han (2017), the projects are started with
an innovative idea of where they are successful later which to work on smooth styles of small
sprints. At finishing of each project sprint, modules are to be verified to see any bugs and
customer comments are collected before occurring of next sprint. Alnaggar and Pitt (2019)
mentioned that the benefits are that after developing of original plan, alternations are ended to
programs with predictable structural changes. This method is less challenging to do the
project tasks in addition review refinements in the construction industry, even submission of
project. Regular debugging makes sure of misuse earlier which suggests that the project are
ready to weak as well as may be probable to become worthy product.
6. Methodology
The purpose of this study is to recognize various methods in project management and
its benefits for the construction projects. Primary data collection is to be selected for this
study by accessing data using online survey method (Kumar, 2019). The data are collected
from employees of the Australian construction industry, ADCO Constructions, helps to
determine best PMM from among various methods. Selection of best PMM among various
methods is critical for the project manager, therefore one of the factor used to identify method
is ability to deliver projects on time in addition to in budget.
The survey is to be carried out using questionnaires, delivered by the researcher.
Survey method is employed in this research study for clarifying the research questions and

ensuring that questions are understood by the participants before answering it. This study will
conduct survey to get quantitative profile of the PMM as well as its practices towards project
performance into the construction industry. Quantitative data analysis will be used by
researcher to investigate the research topic through collection of numerical data and the
researcher will transform the collected data in numerical form (Gray, 2019).
Population
The population of this study will consist local construction projects of the
construction company, ADCO Constructions in Australia. The population will consider for
this study is 50, consisting of management staffs as well as contractors those are playing a
key role into project management.
Sample size and selection
The sampling is required in this study as population is widely spread in each state of
Australia. The sample size will consider for this research study is 50. Each of the sample will
provide response to survey questions including engineers, project managers, supervisors and
administrators, randomly selected from the team of project management. In this study, cluster
sampling method will be used as it will reduce both time as well as cost taken to perform the
survey work. This method will involve procedure of area identification surveyed by random
collection of sample.
7. Limitations
The limitations in research study is normal to define areas of restricted project scope.
The respondents those are involved in research study are not provided any pressure and
influence. The respondents of ADCO Constructions can bias towards the company that may
impact the research findings. Therefore, there are limitations related to reliability of this
work.
