including Coastal Pathway Upgrades
Project scope
In order to bid for a project in most cases businesses, organizations and even
government councils also put up tenders and accordingly negotiate those. It is the
responsibility of the project manager and project sub contactors to bid for the project. This
project is about development and construction of Mooloolaba holiday Park including the
coastal pathway upgrades. In order to accomplish this project the project manager needs to
break the complex work into two sub sections or stages. In stage one the coastal pathway will
be upgraded and in the second stage the holiday park will be upgraded as per the consumers
and owner’s expectation. The first stage of the project will be initiated on 1st July, 2019 and

Part 2: Short answer type question
1. Answer to Question 1
Soft Skills: The soft skills can be considered as combination of some social skills, people skill,
personality traits, communication skills and career attributes which are important for navigation
of the surrounding environment, achieving the goals and performing well with complementing
hard skills. Thus the soft skills can be described as some desirable qualities in form of employees
which is not depending on the acquired knowledge. Instead of it this are actually depending on
the ability of dealing with the people, common sense and a positive flexible attitude.
Soft skills are extremely important for the project managers to successfully execute a
project. In the following section five essential soft skills will be demonstrated which are
extremely important for project management and for leading the project management team.
Communicate and Listen: The soft skill of communicate and listen is very much
important for the project manager for successfully complete a project. From various of
projects it has been assessed that improper type of communication is one of the prior
reason behind the failure of a project (Muller 2017). Thus proper communication and
listening from the end of the project stakeholders is very much important soft skill in this
aspect. This skills can be developed by the project manager by the practice of adapting,
listening, sharing as required. In the project aspects the communication contribute to the
management of the product by sharing the vision of the project with the project team. It

also helps to coordinate with the other stakeholder of the project for any type of
requirement changes and potential risks.
Integrity and Honesty: Integrity and Honesty is very much important for describing
character of someone. It is very much important for the project manager that the team
will always trust the project manager that the project manager will be able to lead the
project towards a successful completion (Zareei 2018). In this aspect the integrity and the
honesty contributes to the successful leading and managing of the project teams by
building trust among the stakeholders of the project. Building trust among the employees
and the stakeholders is important so that the project always remain in function state and
properly gets to its conclusive state.
Trust and Respect: For a successful project management, it is very much important
building trust and respect within the project execution environment. Thus this is an
important skill which must be possessed by the project manager for successful
management of the project. Building trust and respect actively contributes to the leading
and managing the project team as this helps to main and improve the trust with the
stakeholder which are extremely important for the successful project management.
Relationship Development: For a successful project management it is very much
important for the project manager to ensure a proper relationship management which will
lead to critical success of the project. Proper development of the relationships with the
project stakeholder is capable of support the project more as critical project success can
achieved through this which is important for management of the project teams.
Leading team by examples: Leading the project team is very much important for the
success of the initiated project. Thus in this aspect the project manager can lead the

6PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND PRINCIPLES
project by demonstration of various of past examples. By demonstrate the project with
some real-time example the project manager will be able to execute whole project
essentially within the timeframe of the project. Also, by demonstration of the examples
effective relationship can be also build which will contribute to manage the project team.
2. Answer to Question 2
Critical Path: The critical path is considered as a typical type of algorithm which is mainly used
for the scheduling purpose of a set of a whole project activity. In most of the cases this critical
path is used with the conjunction with the PERT or Program Evaluation and Review Technique
(Zareei 2018). The critical path can be determined by the identification of the longest stretch
regarding the dependent activities and the time which is important for the measuring that is
required for completing them from start to the finish.
In the aspects of the project scheduling the critical path is very much important as the
critical path allows the teams to identify the important tasks which need to be performed in the
project with a priority basis. The main benefit due to which the critical path is important are the
improved resource management, shortened timeline and better planning for the project. For these
type of advantages of the critical path it is considered within the aspects of project scheduling.
There are some steps are available which need to be follow sequentially for the
calculation of critical path. In the following section all the steps are described.
1. Finding of all Activities
2. Creation of the Schedule Network Diagram
3. Identification of all the possible paths
4. Calculation duration of each of the path

Thus by following above four steps the critical path can be determined easily.
Considering an example this the critical path is able impact the life cycle of a project by
shortening the life cycle of the project without decreasing the project efficiency.
Float: In the concept of project scheduling is considered as the total amount time that is which a
particular task in the network of the project can be delayed without any type of delay to the
completion date of the project and the subsequent tasks (Shaw and Sellers 2015).
For the project scheduling purpose the float is very much important as the total float
represents the flexibility of the schedule which can be measured by subtraction of the early start
dates of the path which is needed for the completion of the project (Todorović et al. 2015). Float
is very much important for the critical path as the number of total floats of the noncritical
activities key to computation the critical path drag of a particular type of activity, such that
amount of time directly added to the duration of the project.
The calculation of the float is very much easy. The float can be calculated by difference
between completion date of the project and total duration of the activities of the critical path.
There float can impact the lifecycle of the project by making it more flexible in nature.
3. Completion of the project business case
Overview
These business cases depicts the importance and business value of designin, developing
and implementing a disaster management plan for improving public relationship and integrate
needful company changes. The company that has been nominated for this business case is
Australian Tree Crop (ATC). This company is known for its global business structure of growing
and selling tress (Lock 2017). However, due to serially occurring natural disaster the company is

facing major c=economic loss. In order to get back to the primary high level brand image ACT
has planned to establish an in house team for evaluating natural disaster improve public relations
as well as instigate needful changes.
Problem statement
Due to sequentially occurring natural disaster like- flood, draught, wildfires, cyclone the
revenue of the revenue of the company was affected badly. Apart from that, company fails to
identify and instigate needful changes considering public relations. As a result the entire
company faced major challenges.
Situation analysis
After analyzing the situation, it has been determined that, implementation and
development of proper disaster management plan and natural disaster recovery plan would only
be able to identify the cause of revenue loss (Hornstein 2015). It will also help ACT to get back
on higher economic marginal growth point.

Part 3:
Answer to Question 1
Strategic project planning is referred to as a process used for managing any project
successfully. If, proper management processes and business strategies are not followed by the
project manager and project team members then, project will fail to meet the expectation, goals
and project objectives (Kerzner and Kerzner 2017). The strategic planning process are comprises
of various steps that the project management team should go throughout the project development
lifecycle phase (Binder 2016). The project strategic plan of the project is comprises of
Analysis of strategic position:
This is the first phase of developing strategic planning for the project. It involves analysis
of the following questions such as what needs to be done, where is to go and how to get there.
Detailed assessment of this aspects are required for developing an effective strategic planning
that ensures success in the project as successful projects are all about effective strategic planning
and execute that according to the project requirements (Davies and Brady 2016). In analyzing
Document Page
12PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND PRINCIPLES
requirements for strategic planning, SWOT analysis is often considered and it provides details
overview about strength of the organization, its weakness, opportunities and threats both
internally and externally and analysis of these aspects provides context for strategic planning
along with exact requirements for enhancing effectiveness of the organizational strategy.

Development of actual strategic planning:
Once requirement for strategic planning is determined, the next step is to design actual
plan that will be considered throughout the project execution (Kerzner 2019). This plan needs to
include following aspects into the plan:
What are the major initiatives in the project that has the highest impact on the project
with reference to the mission and vision that the company wants to achieve through the
project
Categorization of type of impacts for example which impact has major importance in the
project. It might be consumer acquisition or it might be revenue. However, prioritization
of impact is something which plays an important role in developing strategic planning
Which initiatives are most important for the project and how they help in achieving
project goals through strategic planning
How progress in the project will be measured and what will measure if project goals are
achieved or not
Execution and management of plan:
Once strategic planning for the project is developed, the next step is to execute the plan
and integrate it with the project execution (Papke-Shields and Boyer-Wright 2017). However,
before execution of the plan, this plan needs to be communicated to the various department of
the organization so that each of the departments of the organization is aware of the plan. This
will ensue that team work is according to the strategic planning.
Review and revision of plan:
Document Page
14PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND PRINCIPLES
No strategic planning is perfect, but this does not mean that issues with the strategic
planning is not reviewed (Kerzner and Kerzner 2017). In fact, review process has to be
implemented throughout the execution of the project and once an issues is identified, it will be
assessed properly and if required the strategic plan needs to be revised accordingly so that the
plan developed for the project is effective and efficient for the project execution.
Answer to Question 3:
When developing a product or service in a project, there are two methods available for
this process. Product or service might be developed in-house or it might be developed through
outsourcing has as well (Heldman 2018). Now whether to choose in-house development or
outsourcing for the project, it completely depends on the project requirements and each choice
has some specific reasons which is described in this context.
Three reasons for choosing in-house product or service development:
Consistent with organizational culture:
When project teams are formed within the organization consisting of employees of the
organization, there is no requirement for the organization to make the project team familiar with
the organizational structure and organizational culture (Leicht et al. 2017). In order to ensure that
the execution of the project is proper, it is important to make sure that project team is aware of
the organizational culture and organizational structure as well, otherwise it is not possible to
make team performance consistent with organizational mission and vision
Control over project activities and project team:
Document Page
15PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND PRINCIPLES
When product or service is developed though in-house method, it is easier for the higher
authority to have proper control. Along with that, the project is also free from external
interference and this allows to ensure that the project execution is effective as it offers greater
control over project issues and also makes it easier to resolve those issues so that product or
service developed is of highest quality (Niazi et al. 2016).
Enhanced communication in the project:
Communication plays an important role for effective project execution. In-house
development makes it easier to communicate with various project teams as they are easier to
reach as they are part of the organization (Leicht et al. 2017). Existing communication plan is
applicable for communicating with them. Hence no need to design separate communication plan
which is the case in outsourcing where communicating with the project team is not only difficult,
it is sometime not effective if appropriate communication plan is not developed and integrated
with the project plan.
Three reasons for choosing outsourcing:
Required expertise is not available:
When organization does not have required skilled professional for executing the project,
organizations often decide for outsourcing which offers skilled and professional team consisting
of highly skilled and talented professionals who have potential to complete technically complex
project with success (Niazi et al. 2016).
Cost effective:

Outsourcing offers quality service at lower cost which companies often consider for
reducing cost in project and to ensure that return of investment is proper, thus providing context
for maximizing financial resource of the project which is an important aspect for ensuring
success in the project (White and James 2017).
Risk mitigation:
Outsourcing allows for transferring risk of the project to a third party and thus helping in
minimizing risk in the project through proper strategies and techniques (Niazi et al. 2016). For
example, if a project involves collection of personal data of consumer, it has legal risk if data is
stolen by hackers due lack of security. Now when data collection process is outsourced, the
outsourcing party should ensure that data is safe and secure which helps in minimizing the risk of
the project.
