1. Introduction
The paper mainly reflects on the principles of project management in healthcare industry.
It is found that many leading organizations across the different geographic borders are embracing
project management as one of the means in order to control the spending as well as for
improving the results of the project (Project Management Institute, 2013). It is found that the use
of project management methodologies, models as well as standards are generally helpful in
achieving desirable outcomes within the project of healthcare industry that further helps in
embracing different contemporary organizations. In this paper, application of PM processes,
methodologies as well as different knowledge areas of PM are generally discussed. The paper
also elaborates the relation of project management success and failures and further reflects on the
consequences when a project management practice is not implemented within the project.
The organization chosen for the analysis is Calvarycare. Calvary is a not-for-profit
Catholic health care organisation. The organization has the mission of providing quality,
compassionate healthcare to the most vulnerable, including those reaching the end of their life.
Sisters of the Little Company of Mary health Care started this health care organization in the
year of 1885. Since then to now, the organization is providing health care services in Australia.
2. Application of effective project management processes
According to Wysocki (2014), the project management processes is mainly defined as
one of the administration process that helps in planning as well as controlling the services for the
successful implementation of the project within the healthcare industry. It is found that the
project management processes that are used within the different phases of the project are

considered to be beneficial for the successful execution of the project in the healthcare industry.
The application of effective project management processes is generally elaborated below:
Phase management: It is found that the project phases can be managed effectively with
the utilization of effective procedures of project management (Badewi, 2016). It is found that
proper phase of management assists in completing the project work on time that further helps in
accomplishing the project objectives within the healthcare industry.
Planning: The utilization of effective project management processes generally helps in
carrying out high level of planning for executing the project phase effectively. In addition to the
project management processes, if the project has right resources as well as tools then the entire
project will be delivered on time and within the budget for maintaining proper quality standards.
Control: It is found that effective use of project management processes in the healthcare
industry generally assists in controlling the scope, cost as well as issues that are associated with
the project for managing time and benefits of the project effectively (Kivila, Martinsuo &
Vuorinen, 2017). In addition to this, if proper reports are generally created which contain proper
information then it will be helpful in providing appropriate picture of the entire proceeding.
In case of Calvarycare, the management of the organization need to focus in the three
steps while undertaking any project within the organization.
3. Application of effective project management methodologies and knowledge
areas
It is stated by Svejvig and Andersen (2015) that a project management methodology is
mainly defined one of the system of practices, techniques as well as procedures that are utilized
for working in a discipline. It is found that there are different types of PM methodologies and

they are applied in the project as per their suitability. The application of different methodologies
of PM are generally elaborated below:
Agile: Agile methodology is considered as one of the most recognizable PM
methodology which is used in the project that are very much incremental as well as iterative. It is
considered as one of the processes where the solutions as well as demands generally evolve with
the help of proper collaborative effort of the project team (Papke-Shields et al., 2017). The main
benefit that is utilized by applying agile methodology is that it helps in accommodating the
change requirements of the project within the entire development phase for satisfying the
customers.
Scrum: The main goal of the SCRUM methodology is to properly developing, delivering
as well as sustaining different types of complex products with the help of collaboration,
accountability as well as iterative progress. The SCRUM methodology is capable of providing
certain benefits by improving the quality of development as well as by focussing on the delivery
of the project.in addition to this, SCRUM assists in providing a chance to the project team to
become much more creative within the entire project lifecycle.
Waterfall: Waterfall methodology is considered as one of the traditional methodology
that is mainly applied within the manufacturing as well as construction projects. In this
methodology, the project execution is generally done in a sequential way and as result the project
manager are unable to move the next phase until the previous phase of the project gets executed
(Kaiser, El Arbi & Ahlemann, 2015). It is found that the application of the waterfall
methodology assists in managing the rigidity of the entire model such that each phase of the
project has specific deliverable as well as proper review procedure.

Six/sigma: It is one of the project methodology that is mainly applied within the project
for improving the quality of the project by reducing the number of errors with the help of proper
procedure with the identification of the factors that are not working. Moreover, it utilizes quality
management methodologies that are helpful in maintaining the quality of the project.
4. Relation of project management to success and failures
It has been found that the selection of an appropriate project management methodology is
very important to get the desired level of success in the project (Ramazani & Jergeas, 2015). In
case of the Calvarycare, it can be said that the waterfall methodology will be the most
appropriate one as it is less complex and the organization will be able to easily adopt the changes
step by step.
On the other hand, it is found that if the project managers are unable to utilize strong
leadership skills, proper communication as well as effective planning then it would be quite
difficult to accomplish the project goals. Therefore, the managers of Calvarycare need to give
focus in the area of the leadership and change management.
5.Consequences when project management practices are not implemented
effectively
If the project management practices are not implemented effectively with the healthcare
industry, then it can occur a number of issues and challenges that are mainly elaborated below:
Schedule slippage: If the project management practices are not implemented effectively
within the project that is associated with the healthcare industry then it will be quite difficult to
keep track on the schedule of the project and progress as per the schedule that is implemented in

the initial phase of the project (Project Management Institute, 2013). It is found that due to
improper implementation of PM practices, it would be quite difficult to manage the project
schedule and therefore the chances of schedule slippage are quite that further causes delay within
the project.
Delay in the project: Inappropriate implementation of project management practices
generally creates a lot of obstruction within the project that is associated with the healthcare
industry which further leads to extension in executing the activities of the project that further
causes extension of the final completion date of the project. Delay within the project further
creates financial issues as the project requires more budget for managing the execution of project
activities.
Problems in accomplishing project goals: It is analyzed that in the absence of proper
project management practices, the project managers are unable to follow the scope of the project
in the healthcare industry and as a result faces a lot of challenges in accomplishing the entire
project within the specified time and budget by accomplishing the project goals (Project
Management Institute, 2017). Moreover, if the project goals are not achieved then the project
can be considered as failure.
Over budget: If the project management practices are not properly implemented within
the project then it will be quite difficult to manage the project related activities quite effectively.
In addition to this, in the absence of PM practices, it is also difficult to manage the resources of
the project within the healthcare industry effectively which further increases the budget of the
project (Wysocki, 2014). In order to manage the budget of the project and for completing the
project within budget, it is quite important to implement proper project management practices
within the project quite effectively.

Calvarycare should have an well-developed plan for the project work because any delay
in the project may hamper the operations and it is a serious issue as the organization is providing
health care services to the care seekers.
6. Conclusion
It can be concluded from the entire paper that project management processes as well as
methodologies generally plays an important role in managing as well as controlling the project
work within the healthcare industry quite effectively. It is found that the paper discusses the
application of the project management practices as well as project methodologies within the
project. The different aspects of the project management work and methodologies have been
analysed in this presentation with focus in the operations of Calvarycare health care organization.
It can be concluded that appropriate planning and timely completion of the project is very
important for Calvarycare as well as other health care organizations. The healthcare
organziations need to ensure that any type of change management would not affect the quality of
the services provided to the patients.
