2PROJECT MANAGEMENT SERVICE AND DEVELOPMENT
Question 1 (a)
Analysis of Performance of the Selected Projects
1. Nominate three projects for the discussion
This paper demonstrates the roles and different activities important to be followed by the
project manager and respective project team members to meet primary project objectives and
goals. The paper focuses and analyses the performances of 3 different projects those are
nominated.
The nominated organization that operates the 3 above mentioned engineering projects is
“ABC Engineering Project Management Service and Development Company”. The 3
engineering projects that are nominated here for further discussion are:
Project A: planning, design and implementation of a solar panel highway in New South Wales.
Project B: Development of a major electricity substation in a remote location near Perth
Project C: Implementation of an Information System in ABC Engineering Project Management
Service and Development Company
2. Defining key characteristics of each nominated project
Project A: planning, design and implementation of a solar panel highway in New South Wales.
Fit with current organizational strategic direction: “ABC Engineering Project
Management Service and Development Company”, operates different engineering projects in

Australia. The world is now highly focused on saving non renewable resources rather they are
trying to use different renewable resources to develop and implement different projects. In order
to bringing down the electricity expense, the local government of Australia, New South Wales
has decided to design and develop a solar panel highway in a rural location.
The location chosen for the design and development of the solar roadway is an
environmentally sensitive area which is contiguous to the new estate of New South Wales. In
addition to this the location chosen for the construction is ranges from 2000 to 10000 sq meter.
The resident who are taking pride in the natural environment and requires a peaceful living
ambiance will be the neighbours of the roadway. It will give peace, noise free and pollution free
environment to the locals as large and heavy weighted four wheelers are not allowed drive over
this road.
Estimated cost: From analysis of the technical and non technical requirements of the
project it is effectively identified that the total cost that would be required for the successful
accomplishment of the project is $100 Million.
Estimated duration: It is determined that the project manager leader and the team
members have to complex the project in 3 years without delay to avoid overrunning budget risks.
Starting from the formal planning upto the completion of the project must not take more than 3
years. Though, there is other less controversial option present for the project. The nearby
residential have requested to change the route of the new roadway hence there will be a delay of
12 months or 1 year in project implementation. As a whole it can be said that it will take
approximately 4 years for the successful completion of the solar panel highway development
project.

4PROJECT MANAGEMENT SERVICE AND DEVELOPMENT
Expected project delivery quality: It is predicted that if all success criteria and project
development plans are properly followed by the project team associates and stakeholders then
the project will deliver the service according to the primary objectives.
Current expenses, proportion complete and quality benchmark achieved: The
current expense of the project is estimated to be $95 Million and 50% of the project or half of the
project is completed. Till date the roadway construction is done by installation of the
photovoltaic cells. The project is running as per the developed plan. In more details, the base
layer of the highway is completed and the optical layer of the highway is half completed.
Key stakeholders: In order to implement the solar panel roadway project in Australia
they key stakeholders who are assigned include project manager, finance manager, electrical
engineer, civil engineer, resource manager, project contractors, sponsors, sub contractors and
labors.
Main risks: The main risks that may interrupt the project success and project progress
are construction and environmental risk. Due to environmental factors if the solar pane and the
photovoltaic cells get damaged then the project will fail to meet the expected objectives.
Therefore the project manager and project team members are required to out effective focus
during the installation of optical layer.
Impact on environment and society (short-term and long-term)
The short term and long term impact of the solar panel roadway project on society and
environment are as follows:
Short term impact

5PROJECT MANAGEMENT SERVICE AND DEVELOPMENT
It can successfully reduce the rate of pollution
It increases the use of renewable resources
Long term impact
It can reduce overall cost and expense of project
It helps to create an eco friendly ambiance
It utilizes the renewable resources and reduces the use of non renewable resource
Complexity
The design of the project itself is little much complex. The steps those are to be
sequentially followed for the accomplishment of the project are design of the base layer, optical
layer, and transparent layer. The electrical engineer and the civil engineer assigned to the project
are necessary to have enough ability, experience and information so that they can work
according to the project objectives. If any one of the layers are not constructed efficiently then,
the entire project will be a failure.
Other factors (for example, human resource, communications and procurement)
The human resources who are contributing the project progress include project manager,
civil engineer, resource manager, labours, finance manager, operation manager and electrical
engineer.
While conducting the project the project manager requires maintaining open
communication. The open communication approach gives an independent and common
communication platform to the project team members where each of the development group
members can successfully share their ideas and thoughts to the rest of the project team

associates. As this project will take upto 4 years for accomplishment therefore always face to
face communication is not possible therefore the other channel of communication that will be
used for making interaction include conference, email, video conference etc.
The procurement factors needed for the completion of the solar panel roadway include:
Capacity of making the solar modules
Awareness regarding timeline and estimated budget or cost
Collateral savings and payback run with the solar project
Project integration factors
There are some factors that may impact the project are:
Availability of solar radiation in the selected location for roadway construction
The elevation and orientation of the photovoltaic array
The power rating capabilities of the arrays
The total energy conversion efficiency of the photovoltaic modules used
Design of the complete system
The grid reliability and operation
Thickness of the cables
Variation of the module efficiency with changing temperature
Accumulation of dirt and smog
Project B: Development of a major electricity substation in a remote location near Perth
Fit with current organizational strategic direction

7PROJECT MANAGEMENT SERVICE AND DEVELOPMENT
It has been analyzed that the project is not in shape with present organizational strategic
direction because the location chosen to install and develop the electric substation in Perth is
remote where suppliers are failing to deliver the equipments and other needful products.
Estimated cost: The total cost estimated for the project is $10 Millions
Estimated duration: 2 years
Expected quality of deliverables:
It is expected that the project will deliver quality services to the people living in the
remote location of Perth.
Current expenses, percentage complete, quality benchmark achieved: the project is
completed approximately by 40% within the expense of $0.75. In addition to this the project
benchmark or standard quality is also reached.
