Title
An Investigation into the Security of Mobile Phone Communication Apps
1. Introduction
The purpose of this project is to investigate the current security systems used
by mobile phone communication applications and what are existing threats that can
override the security systems and steal personal information of the users.
1.1 Project Background
Mobile phone is now the most widely used electronic product in the world.
Globally, there are billions of mobile phone users who use the devices not only for
making phone calls but also various other purposes like messaging, gaming, video
calling, accessing social media and others. Initially, mobile phones were developed
as an upgrade over landline telephones so that the users are able to carry the
device with them instead of just keeping it at one place at home (Mutchler, Doupé,
Mitchell, Kruegel & Vigna, 2015). However, with the rapid development of
technology, mobile phones soon started getting upgrades with internet connection,
mobile applications like whatsapp, vimeo, instagram, snapchat and various games
where players from around the world are connected through one common server.
These applications are significant sources of entertainment for the users and also
allow people from around the world to stay connected in a common platform.
1.2 Context of the Project
The apps and features, as discussed above, also come with various security
risks and issues as the phones are connected to the internet and the users need to

for mobile phones and how much secure are these apps for storing and using
personal information by the users.
The objectives of the project are as follows.
To identify the security gaps and issues with the communication apps
in mobiles
To identify suitable solutions to the identified issues and problems and
make appropriate recommendations regarding the use of personal
information in these apps
The deliverable of this project is a detailed research report including
literature review regarding the security of the mobile communication apps.

The project methodology will include a stage study and development and is
shown in the following table.
