This project aims to achieve economic growth through tourism while conserving the
ecological balance in Great Barrier Reef. This project intends to create awareness among
local communities and tourists about the activities that lead to degradation of
environmental resources. Global warming, industrialization and farm pollution are leading
to coral bleaching. The initiatives taken through this project will protect the coral reefs and
prevent them from dying. Adopting eco-friendly techniques will help to reduce
environmental pollution. This project aims to maintain the rich biodiversity of Great
Barrier Reef by protecting the endangered species of flora and fauna. Rich biodiversity
will attract more tourists which will further boost economic growth. Involving local people
in the promotion of tourism will lead to development and growth of local communities.
This helps them in getting employment and sustains their economic growth. Promoting
local food/ beverages will help in spreading local culture and traditions.

Great Barrier Reef, Australia is a popular tourist destination due to the presence of vast
biodiversity. It harbours several species of green turtles, dolphins, whales, fish, birds and
corals. The Australian government has declared 1700 different species of animals and
plants as threatened (Cossio, 2016). The population of mammals is also declining in the
region. Overfishing is a major threat to marine environment. Fishing by indigenous
communities and commercial fishing has threatened several species of marine life. Great
Barrier Reef catches the attention of tourists, scientists and explorers from different parts
of the world. Great Barrier Reef has become a target for several oil and mining companies
over the past few decades. The mining activities for the extraction of coal emit huge
amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere (Cossio, 2016). Depletion of natural resources
and environmental degradation has become a major issue. Large scale business
establishments are disturbing the flora and fauna of the region. The habitat of coral reefs is
being damaged by the hospitality and tourism industry. Wastes from resorts and hotels are
contaminating the coastal waters. Littering of plastic wastes is polluting the water. Release
of toxic chemicals is impacting the marine wildlife in a negative manner. Several reports
have suggested that coral reefs are being affected by climatic changes. Global warming
has led to coral bleaching (Cossio, 2016). High level of carbon dioxide present in the
atmosphere leads to increase in the temperature of ocean water. The increased level of
carbon dioxide emissions makes the water acidic that starts dissolving the coral reefs.
Warm and acidic water makes it difficult for corals to photosynthesize. Scientists have
predicted that further increase in concentration of carbon dioxide may lead to

disappearance of corals. Thus, it is imperative to take strong measures for protecting the
Great Barrier Reef from dying. It is important to protect the Great Barrier Reef due to the
revenue generation and job creation due to tourist activities. Damage to the ecosystem of
the region will reduce tourism (Cossio, 2016). Tourism helps to generate revenue of over 6
billion dollars on an annual basis. Tourism to Great Barrier Reef provides economic boost
to Australia but it is equally important to preserve the biodiversity. Cheap imported
products are being sold in the name of local products. A sustainable tourism project takes
into consideration several aspects like local economy, social welfare and protection of
environmental resources (barrierreef.org, n.d.). This project aims to support tourism
without having an adverse impact on the natural resources.

It is essential to create awareness among the tourists through videos and online media
about the impact of various activities on marine ecosystems. Awareness will be spread
about different activities that disturb the ecological balance of Great Barrier Reef. More
tourists will be attracted by improving facilities for people having disabilities. Proper

information will be given to the tourists about the natural environment of Great Barrier
Reef and culture of local communities. Leaflets and brochures will be distributed among
tourists regarding various activities that harm the aquatic ecosystem. The funds collected
through this project will be used to clean the beaches and ocean waters. Strict policy will
be formulated regarding waste dumping. Individuals and business establishments will be
fined for dumping wastes on land (Jacobsen, 2016). This project will work in collaboration
with local communities to protect the endangered species of orangutan, marine turtles,
black cockatoos and rock-wallabies. Local people will be encouraged to protect the rare
and endangered species of wildlife. Initiatives will be taken to restore their natural habitat.
A partnership will be established with the local communities to keep a check on excessive
fishing. This project will restrict fishing activities in Great Barrier Reef (Jacobsen, 2016).
This project will help to keep a check on farm pollution. Innovative alternatives will be
developed for disposing-off farm waste. Farmers will be given awareness about “eco-
friendly” farming techniques. Farmers will be given guidance about restricting the uses of
fertilizers, pesticides and insecticides. With the help of Australian government, this project
will facilitate passing of laws regarding farm pollution. This will help to stop the flow of
farm pollutants into ocean waters. The funds collected through this project will be utilized
for repairing the catchment areas. The level of carbon emissions will be brought down by
working in collaboration with entrepreneurs and local communities (Jacobsen, 2016).
Innovative solutions will be developed for reducing carbon footprints. Initiatives will be
taken to replace fossils fuels by renewable sources of energy. For example, solar energy
will be used for heating purposes. Awareness will be created regarding the importance of
sustainable food production techniques (Jacobsen, 2016) (Roberts, 2016). Water-recycling
plants will be set-up at different locations. This project will focus on proper waste
management. Proper segregation of wastes will be done. All the wastes released from
information will be given to the tourists about the natural environment of Great Barrier

water bodies. The involvement of local communities will be increased in promotion and
development of tourism. Incentives will be given to tourism operators and hospitality
establishments for employing people belonging to local communities. Proper training will
be given to local people so that they can handle professional positions (Carlsen & Butler,
2010). Cheap imported products will not be allowed to enter marketplace. Visitors will be
encouraged to purchase products made by local people. Businesses will be encouraged to
contribute a certain percentage of their profits towards the development of local school.
Visitors will be encouraged to try local food. Resorts and hotels will be encouraged to
include local foods and beverages in their menu (Carlsen & Butler, 2010). Business
establishments will be encouraged to purchase raw materials from local sources.

sustainability principles (e.g. equity; systems thinking; resilience; diversity; adaptability; innovation; co-
existence; effectiveness; self-determination) and how it through this fosters sustainable outcomes. Use

Cleaning the trash from beaches will prevent the waste materials from accumulating in the
ocean waters. This will help to check water pollution because the plastic bags and bottles
kill thousands of aquatic animals on a yearly basis. Several birds and fish are choked to
death due to plastic waste (Carlsen & Butler, 2010). Clean beaches will further attract
more tourists. Protecting the endangered species of animals and birds will help to preserve
the ecological balance. Restoring their natural habitat will prevent these species from
getting extinct. This will ensure the sustainability principle of diversity (Carlsen & Butler,
2010). Extinction of one species will impact the overall ecosystem because different
organisms are inter-related to each other in terms of food chain. Co-existence of different
species is important because existence of one organism depends upon other organism.
Proper farming and irrigation techniques will improve yield and minimize negative impact

on environment. Prevention of farm pollution will help to maintain the health of marine
ecosystem. Reducing dependence on fossil fuels will slow down warming of coral waters
(Newlands, 2016). Climate change has become a global issue. Thus, reducing carbon
footprints will help to keep a check on climate change. Lower carbon emissions will
protect the reefs from getting bleached. If the coral reefs keep losing their colour, Great
Barrier Reef will lose its significance. After losing their colour, the reefs finally die.
Ensuring that ocean waters do not become warm due to carbon dioxide emissions will help
to preserve the beauty of coral colonies. Water-recycling will help to save water
(Newlands, 2016). Water is a scarce resource that needs to be used judiciously. Proper
waste management system will lead to significant reduction in pollution. This will aligned
with the sustainability principle of effectiveness. Proper treatment of waste will help to
prevent land and water pollution. The initiatives taken through this project will make
significant contribution towards development of local communities. Providing support to
local communities will help in gaining appreciation from national and international
visitors who favour welfare of local communities. Providing employment opportunities to
local people will help them in adopting a non-destructive source of income. Job creation
for local people will help to address the social problem of poverty. The skill-set acquired
through training programs will help them in meeting their career objectives and having a
steady flow of income (Newlands, 2016). Support for local schools will help to improve
quality of education and literacy level among local people. Offering region food and
beverages in hospitality business establishments will help to increase awareness about
local communities. This will help in promoting culture of local communities. Spreading
awareness about traditional food and beverages will help in preserving the heritage of
local people. Purchasing raw materials from local sources will lead to economic
