Purpose of the Assessment
The purpose of this assessment is to assess the student in
the following learning outcomes:

Not yet Competent
(NYC)
1.1 Develop and confirm procedures for project authorisation
with an appropriate authority
1.2 Obtain authorisation to expend resources
1.3 Confirm project delegations and authorities in project
governance arrangements
2.1 Identify, negotiate and document project boundaries
2.2 Establish measurable project benefits, outcomes and outputs
2.3 Establish a shared understanding of desired project
outcomes with relevant stakeholders
2.4 Document scope management plan
3.1 Implement agreed scope management procedures and
processes
3.2 Manage impact of scope changes within established time,
cost and quality constraints according to change control
procedures
3.3 Identify and document scope management issues and
recommend improvements for future projects
Assessment/evidence gathering conditions
Each assessment component is recorded as either Competent (C) or Not Yet Competent (NYC). A student
can only achieve competence when all assessment components listed under “Purpose of the assessment”
section are recorded as competent. Your trainer will give you feedback after the completion of each
assessment. A student who is assessed as NYC (Not Yet Competent) is eligible for re-assessment.

The assessment is to be completed according to the instructions given by your assessor.
Feedback on each task will be provided to enable you to determine how your work could be improved.
You will be provided with feedback on your work within two weeks of the assessment due date. All other
feedback will be provided by the end of the term.
Should you not answer the questions correctly, you will be given feedback on the results and your gaps
in knowledge. You will be given another opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge and skills to be
deemed competent for this unit of competency.

ASSESSMENT TASKS
There are two tasks to complete for this unit of competence:
Task 1 Written responses
This activity has been designed to assess your knowledge and understanding of managing project scope
within projects.
This task consists of questionnaires which reflect the knowledge of project management (PMBOK). The
responses should include the following:
Be relevant to your project, unless otherwise stated. Responses should link to the theoretical
aspects of project scope management followed by relevant experience / exposure of your
nominated project you have recently, or are currently working on to progress both your studies and
your projects simultaneously.
If workplace project exposure does not apply to you, you must negotiate with your assessor to use a
scenario/case study examples that you will find on e-learning. However, case study examples are a
suitable substitute where workplace examples cannot be provided. Case studies are available on e-
learning. Theory answers without reference to your experience will not be assessed as satisfactory
Demonstrate that you can or have applied what you have learnt to your project, regardless of
whether you have undertaken all the performance requirements in your workplace
Task 2 – Portfolio of Evidence
The portfolio of evidence comprises the assessment of the application of your project scope knowledge.
You will need to demonstrate your scope management skills applied to a project which is based on a project
you have recently, or are currently working on to progress both your studies and your projects
simultaneously however, case study examples are a suitable substitute where workplace examples cannot
be provided.
To such a degree you must negotiate with your assessor to use a scenario/case study examples that you
will find on e-learning.
Your nominated project must be agreed between you and your Assessor so that its methodology, tools and
techniques accommodate to the performance requirements of each Unit of Competency prior to start of
work on the unit.
Your project must comprise:
a comprehensive, detailed and integrated project management plan
a formal communications plan
a devoted and project-based budget
formal and planned involvement with a wide range of stakeholders
a documented risk, issues and change-management methodology
a quality plan with assurance and control processes
a project team-based environment.
Evidence of the following is important:
demonstration of scope management for several complex projects
knowledge of scope management plans, tools, issues and likely challenges

Question 1: Discuss why it is important for the project manager to formally define scope before
beginning to schedule the project(BSBPMG511 – 1.1, 1.3, 2.1,2.2,2.3,2.4,3.13.2,3.3)4 Marks
Before initiating a project the project manager should formally define a project scope because it
helps to manage the expectation of the project stakeholders and clients. In addition to this, the
constantly changing requirements, overrunning project schedule and budget, poor project
outcomes can be successfully avoided with the help of the scope management plan.
Question 2: Describe how you have formally defined and captured scope in your
workplace(BSBPMG511-2.1)4 Marks
In order to formally define the project scopes within the workplace the common factors those are to
be measured accordingly include project objectives, understanding project aim and goal, necessary
activities and project sub phases, resources, project budget etc. Moreover, it can be said that
perfect combination of scope and objectives leads towards workplace success.
Question 3: Describe how you have formally tracked and managed scope change projects within
your workplace. (BSBPMG511-3.2,3.3)4 Marks
In order to track and manage project scope within the workplace, certain tools and techniques are
available in the those are to be adopted by the project managers in terms of PERT chart, critical
path method, Gantt chart etc.
Question 4: What are the governance arrangements regarding project delegation?

Project governance is referred to as a management framework that is widely used by the project
managers to make proper decision making. In addition to this, for managing project accountability
and associated responsibilities are the other governance arrangements that leads a project towards

massive success.
Question 5: For a project you have managed, what are the critical review points during the
project?(BSBPMG511-1.3, 2.3,3.2,3.3)4 Marks
During the development of the project the critical review points those are required to be managed
by the project managers include scope management, time and cost management, communication
management, resource management, contingency and procurement management, integrity
management etc. It is expected that if all of these aspects are management accordingly then the
project will definitely reach the project objectives within the estimated budget and time.
Question 6: Give a brief description of the project. Explain how the project was selected:

a) How did you identify and measure the benefits?
b) How did you develop the budget?4 Marks
The project is about renovation of a kitchen thus the formal identification and measures of the
project benefits are focused towards benefit activity matrix. In order to gain measurable success
from the project the project is divided into four phases’ identity and structure, planning benefits,
monitoring and optimization of benefits. Realization and evaluation of benefits. If these phases are
properly followed then the project will get measurable benefits.
Based on the project requirements first the resources (both physical and human) will be identified
and then those will be analysed. Further depending upon the complexity of the activities the
resources are allotted to each task and budget is also prepared according to the allocated
resources for each activity and sub activities.
Question 7:Explain how the project was authorised: (BSBPMG511-1.1,1.2,1.3)
a) Do you have a formal project proposal form?
b) Who reviews and signs off on the project? What criteria do they use in assessing project
proposals? 6 Marks
Yes, a formal project proposal is available for the successful implementation of the projects.
In addition to this, the project manager is responsible to reviews and sign offs the project. The
criteria those are reviews for the successful implementation of the project include transparency,
quality, equality of treatment, impartiality of the project and ethical consideration.
