This project examines the issue of theft in the Californian nut industry, analyzing the impact on pistachio, walnut, and almond producers. INTRODUCTION
Project is a task which needs to be completed to reach a specified result or outcome. It
can be defines as an input and output which is required in order to achieve particular task or goal
(Chubb, and Watermeyer, 2017). These project can be of different range complex or simple and
can also be managed by multiple person or one person as well. This project report will
highlighted about a case study of a theft of industry which deals in producing Californian nuts.
This report will lay emphasis on PESTLE Analysis and Porter's five forces model. Different
organisations will also be identified with their capabilities and resources in order to prevent theft
in nut industry. The different resources and capabilities which will required by business to
prevent large scale theft will also be elaborated in this report. Some recommendations along with
summary of finding will also be discussed in the report.
Background to the situation
In this situation, it has been determined that nuts producing industry in California is
suffering from wide scale and highly sophisticated theft in all their stages of supply chain
(Henderson, 2017). Also, theft in Californian industry is affecting a lot to commodity industries
which includes both pistachio nuts and avocado as per the report of media.
PESTLE analysis
Political analysis Changing policies of new government – The Californian nuts industries are facing
difficult challenges with changing policies (Shoory, 2016). The companies dealing in
nuts are incurring losses with frequent change in policies of California government.
These industries need time to adapt with policies of new government. Resource allocation and time scale – As per the data of nuts industries in California. The
company is facing difficulty in gathering and collecting good quality of nuts and time
duration for their production is to be borne by them. Companies in accordance with
managing their allocation of resources and time duration could not able to manage
properly within a particular time frame. The government is not offering any support to
them which directly impacts on their operations and production of nuts.
Economical analysis Unavailability of core infrastructure – The industries of nuts and other commodity
industries in California facing difficulty in their process of production and warehousing

their products because of the unavailability of core infrastructure. The government has
not invest adequate amount in core infrastructure in order to facilitate and improve
business of nuts and other commodities (Holmes, 2016). Skill level of employees working in these industries – The employees of these industries
are very efficient and are skilled enough to handle potential to market their products in
order to improve marketing and sales. They also contributes their suggestions to create
more opportunities in global market. Therefore, they manage trade of nuts in global
market successfully with the efficient workforce.
Socio cultural analysis Presence of attention of Media – The traditional and social media both are growing
rapidly and build an efficient market for industries of nuts. The media suggest that
increasing theft in nuts industries affects other commodity industries which includes
avocado and pistachio. Therefore, the media is creating awareness in nuts industries so
that they can take preventive measures to safeguard other commodities industries and to
maintain goodwill among consumers. Societies attitude towards good health – The attitude of society is increasing towards
maintaining health. This behavior of individuals in society increases the sales of nuts in
California. As the nuts are healthy for every individual and consuming these nuts by them
gains level of nutrition and carbohydrates which helps them to be healthy.
Technological analysis Use of GPS and anti theft devices while supplying products – Some companies in nuts
industry adopt these anti theft devices and GPS tracker for increasing activities of theft in
their companies. This measure helps the companies in resolving issue of theft in
company. Machines of renewable energy – The companies in order to gain sustainable advantage
and efficient use of available resource adapt machines for production which uses source
of renewable energy to function. Like use of solar energy, wind energy, water energy for
operating those machines for production.
Legal analysis

 Employment law – The industries in order to safeguard themselves and to prevent from
legal hazards follows employment law. The companies offer their employees benefit of
remuneration and holidays to follow the law of employment (de Jonge, 2016). Data protection law – It is an important law which is taken into consideration by
different companies of nuts industry. The data of employees and companies are kept
confidential by authority as per the law. Therefore, employees feel safe and secure as
their data remain with the company and will not use anywhere without their permission.
Environmental analysis
 Initiate towards efficient use of resource – The companies use of machines which is
operated by renewable energy which contributes their contribution towards efficient and
effective use of resources (Godwin, and Morgan, 2015).
Porter's Five forces analysis
For identification threat of commodity industry, Pistachio nuts industries will be taken
because pistachio companies are facing huge losses by increasing theft in nuts industries in
California. Threat of new entrants – The commodity industry of pistachio is facing high threat from
new entrants because the company lacks their security which directly impacts on
increasing theft of their goods. Therefore, companies dealing in this industry is already
suffering loss and new entrants bring competition with them. The increasing competition
with increasing activities of theft drag the companies towards failure. Bargaining power of suppliers – The bargaining power of suppliers is very high. As in
this industries there are numerous companies which deals with the commodity pistachio
and trade all over the world (Wilkins, 2015). The suppliers are in high demand and they
negotiate the price according to demand to earn revenue from supplying raw materials. Bargaining power of buyers - The power of buyers are very low because the companies
follow competitive pricing strategy. The companies are facing losses from theft of their
nuts during stage of supply. So, the companies charges competitive pricing to achieve
sales target and customers have no power to bargain in purchasing pistachio. Threat of substitutes – The threat of substitute is high as there are huge variety of nuts
available in the market. The customers substitutes pistachios by walnuts, peanuts,
macadamia nuts etc.

 Rivalry among existing competitors – The companies of pistachios are numerous in
California. So, the existing companies trade in this industries are trades in high
competition and the competitors rivalry is moderately high in nuts industries.
Identification of organisations with the resources and capabilities to prevent theft in the industry Horizon Nut Company – The is a nut company is California. The company faces a lot of
theft activities during supply of the walnuts. The company is abundant of resources and
every resource is well occupied. The horizon nut company was capable enough to supply
their nuts to the final customers but increasing activities of theft forces them to bring
backward performance (Blagg, Tulich, and Bush, Z., 2015). American pistachio growers – The company American pistachios growers is
approximates make sales of $1.6 billion all over industry. Therefore, the company is
capable to supply nuts to whole industry by using abundant resources. Theft activities in
such a big supplier of nut industry affect industry as a whole. Sacramento valley Walnut Growers – The company is the best supplier of California
nuts. They use their resources to attain highest quality walnuts. The seeds and farming are
done in very appropriate manner. Also, they had hired farmers which are experienced in
producing nuts of fine quality. The company is capable to manage and recognize their
brand by providing high quality walnuts. Sacramento is also capable to deliver their
orders according to shipment schedules all with the help of their efficient workforce. Fisher nut company – The fisher nut company produces and supply almonds to the
market of California. The company uses their resources in order to manage quality and
safety of food (Ellis, and Kiessling, 2016). Also, they work hard to mitigate the
expectations of the customer's. The company is capable to market their products. They
are supplying almonds all over the world including industries, snack food and produce
industries, re bagging etc. Wholesome nut company – The company is one of the largest manufacturer and
wholesales of walnuts in California. They supply their walnuts over world wide. The
walnuts are available in good quality and fresh walnuts always deliver to the end users.
Prevention for theft in the nut industries
These company uses different preventive techniques in order to control activities of theft.
Horizon nut company uses tracking device for controlling the track of their trucks which they use

in supply of nuts. The company tracks their movement with it. While American pistachio
growers uses technique of involvement of numerous people in chain of supply. Also, to prevent
from loss of good the company should opt for cargo theft insurance for overcoming the loss of
nuts (Fan, and et.al., 2016) . On the other hand, Sacramento valley walnut growers uses
different lock devices for increasing security of trucks they should invest in more secured and
safe locks for their trucks in order to prevent their nuts by getting theft. The company also started
hiring employees after identification of criminal records. The Wholesome nuts company uses
GPS tracker which is attached with their trucks. Whereas Fisher nut company use Xboxes and
other computer equipment to track their cargo's. These prevention may help the company in
gaining revenue.
The business level resources and capabilities required to prevent large-scale and elaborate theft
within the affected companies Just in time approach – The industry of nuts in California can use just in time approach
in order to track supply of goods and production details. The companies engaged in nuts
industries should only order quantity of raw material which is sufficient for their final
production. The industry as a whole will able to manage the whole process of supply
chain properly. The companies should use their resources efficiently. Like, cost of
warehousing will save by following this approach. Also, the required raw material is
easily managed by workforce of different companies (Baak, 2015) . The supply chain
will also be managed properly and fulfill the demand of final users appropriately. Cloud computing – These are remote servers which is hosted on the internet. The
company instead of storing their relevant data on hard drive, can use cloud computing
and manage their quantity of raw material as well as final production from their place of
convenience (Lu, Blakers, and Stocks, 2017). The nut companies can easily manage
and update their data for management of products with an ease. Regular audit – The companies in order to manage internal corruption can conduct audit
on regular basis. The audit will enable employees to stay attentive and manage their work
in accordance with time. Regular audit will prevent any misconduct to be happen and
also prevent theft activities in nut industries as a whole.
 Human resource – The company should hire employees for working in their work place
with proper identification along with history of employees they are hiring. This will

prevent company from theft as they will able to hire only people with good quality and a
person with no criminal background have no or less chances to get influence to conduct
any theft in nuts company (Solomon, and et.al., 2015). This will prevent nuts industries
from losses of theft.
A summary of findings and recommendations for the companies based on nuts
While analyzing porter's five forces model it has been analyzed that the company
company is facing huge threat from rivalries. Also, there is a huge threat from substitute products
because of the availability of numerous products in the market. The companies involved in nut
industries are suffering from huge loss of theft. Although, they take initiative regarding it by
using GPS tracker and cargo insurance for overcoming losses.
Recommendations
 The companies should always use the method of just in time approach for efficient
functioning and appropriate tracking of production and warehousing of nuts (Ben-Amar,
Chang, and McIlkenny, 2017).
 The companies also ask government for handle these activities of theft and to take action
regarding it.
 Every company engages in industry of nuts should opt for cargo theft insurance.
CONCLUSION
This project report was all about theft in California's nut industries. In this report,
PESTLE Analysis and Porter's five forces model were done. Also, five different organisations
with the resources and capabilities in order to prevent theft in industry was also explained. Then
comes capabilities and resources at large scale. At last summary of finding and recommendations
for the nuts company was also explained in this report.
