What do you think companies could do to make themselves more moral organizations?
Morality is concerned with reasoning and behavior in relation to values that are beyond
self-interest. Morality is crucial in organizations and ensuring organizations behave morally,
factors such as leadership and organizational values should be considered. For organizations in
pursuit of morality, corporate social responsibility must be of keen interest since it encompasses
different organizations aspects. To begin with, employee wellbeing should be a priority.
According to TEDx Talks (2015), most organizations prefer acquiring profits at the expense of
employees. This is because according to them, employees are available to be exploited as much
while getting a basic pay.
As a result, worse outcomes have been experienced. For example, when Apple
Corporation’s noticed that the rate of suicide experienced in their supply chain factories was
high, instead of taking a corrective measure, they advised the factory management to design nets
around the factory building so as to catch the jumpers (Berman, 2018). Besides, according to
TEDx Talks (2015), companies that treat their employees do better in the long run. This because
employees are motivated to work towards achieving the company’s vision since they are
acknowledged rather than exploited. The style of management should also be accommodating.
For example, Costco Wholesale Corporation meets the needs of its employees as much as it can.
The company goes to the extent of allowing their employees to enjoy holidays when they should
be working. I believe, organizations should walk the path of purpose without focusing on profits
since profits will always follow.
How can they promote a healthy moral climate inside the company?
I believe organizations should not only focus on themselves in order to gain more profits
or market share but should rather help other companies achieve their purpose. According to
TEDx Talks (2015), after George Merck commercialized the first penicillin medicine, he assisted
other pharmaceutical companies to make the same product since he believed medicine is not for
profit but for the people. Therefore, if a company is able to care for others outside the company,
promoting a healthy moral climate inside the company will be much easier.
