SUBJECT: Proposal to Study Video Game Accessibility
Dear Sir/ Madam,
The main aim of this email is to seek your permission to study the various
accommodations which are available at present for the video gamers who have
certain physical disabilities. I would want your kind feedback on the selection of
this topic for my research work.
This particular topic based on the accessibility of the video gamers with physical
disability has drawn my interest and attention because there is still much to do in
the video game industry so that the disabled gamers can also play certain
games. After my SET education I see a career in the video game industry and so
I want to work on this topic.
The research question which I want to address is that how far the video game
industry is able to meet the requirements of the physically disabled gamers. The
issue of gaming for the physically disabled people has been a persistent problem
in the field video games (Grammenos, Savidis & Stephanidis, 2005).
The video game industry is such that it has the capacity to exceed $ 100 billion in
terms of the revenue (Graham, 2017). Most of the gamers do not even know or
understand the concept of accessibility of the physically disabled people to the
various games designed by them (Game Accessibility, 2017). It is also stated in
the article that in a nation almost 10 to 20 percent people are disabled and so
addressing the issue of game accessibility for these people is important. As a
gamer and software engineer I feel the need of catering to the gaming needs of
the physically disabled.
It is important to address the research question for which a wide range of data is
required. This data can be used to understand the perspective of the gamers as
well as the game developers. From the Entertainment Software Association of
Canada (ESAC) and the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) data and
opinions from many stakeholders of the video game industry can be received
(Yuan, Folmer & Harris, 2011). There are many advocates who are working to
address the lack of accessibility of video games for the physically disabled
section of the society. The Accessibility Foundation, Games for Change and the
International Game Developers Association — Game Accessibility Special
Interest Group (IGDA—GASIG) are some of the organizations who are working
on this issue. A close introspection of the small video game industries can
provide me better idea about the production pattern of the game developers and
their companies. The internal due date for the project is scheduled on 17
