PROTOCOL CASE STUDY
ASSIGNMENT

Executive Summary
Sustainable development progress can be achieved through cooperation of governments, national
and international development partners along with regional organisations. The current scenario
in the world requires a greater integration at economic level, equitable adherence for natural
resource utilisation and adapting to climate changes which will be vital for the long term future
sustainability. The current study aims to provide an overview of the Pacific Islands along with
evaluating the impact of climate change in these regions. The study will discuss the leadership,
language, protocols, cultural aspects and daily life regulations in Fiji Islands, Norfolk Islands,
French Polynesia and American Samoa. The booklet aims to serve as a guide for cultural
awareness and general information regarding etiquettes and protocols to be followed in Pacific
island region. The BRE Global encourages the citizens to adopt sustainable practices for
tackling the impact of climate change and install independent solar fired energy units.

Introduction and Overview
The Pacific island members are spread over an area comprising hundreds of Islands in diverse
regions and estimated coverage is around 15% of the surface of the globe. The combined
population of the Pacific Island countries is about 2.3 million (who.int, 2020). They comprise of
the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji,
French Polynesia, Kiribati, the Marshall Islands, Nauru, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Palau,
Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, and Wallis and Futuna. Kiribati, Samoa, Solomon
Islands, Tuvalu and Vanuatu are classified as least-developed countries (World Health
Organization, 2018). The Pacific island region provides challenges and opportunities as to be
found in the remote island economies (Weber, 2017). The regions are relatively small in size,
have limited natural resources, are distantly located from major developed markets and are
vulnerable to external shocks (Barnett and Waters, 2016). In fact Pacific Island Countries are on
the list of top 20 at risk countries according to the World Risk Index to be affected by the
climatic changes and natural disasters (worldbank.org, 2020). The pacific island countries are
undergoing major social and economic changes such as rapid urbanization, breakdown of
traditional support systems, rapid growth in population and migration (Taylor and Kumar, 2016).
Apart from this the region is also experiencing the worst impact of climate changes which raises
concerns of environmental health (Bryant-Tokalau, 2018). The increase in coastal inundation,
soil salinity treating fresh water and food production and natural disasters like tsunamis,
cyclones, and floods are leading to loss of property and destructing infrastructure (Hemstock et
al. 2017).
The Pacific island region is a culturally diverse region and has preserved its traditional aspects
and heritage while incorporating modern innovations in their lifestyle. It is very important that
cultural awareness and knowledge of the region is discussed before undertaking any ventures in
this region (Nunn et al. 2016). The code of ethics and social customs differ from island to island
and it becomes essential to have a knowledge and understanding of basic rules and etiquettes as
prevalent there (Perkiss and Moerman, 2018).
The BRE Global aims to bring real differences in the lives of people living in the Pacific island
regions to take a step ahead in adopting sustainable practices for living, preparing them to
combat the impacts of climate change and provides assistance in creating economic

opportunities. It aims to encourage the citizens to install independent solar fired engines which
can be taken by them during evacuation. This is undertaken as part of strengthening policies
related to climate resilience. This booklet aims to serve as a guideline for cultural awareness
related to general etiquettes and protocols to be kept handy while working in this culturally
enriched diverse region.
