This article examines the relationship between inequality and redistribution in a panel of OECD countries. It finds a non-monotonic relationship between pre-tax-and-transfer income distribution and redistribution, with wealthier and middle-class groups associated with less redistribution and poorer groups with more redistribution. The article also discusses the paradox of redistribution and the impact of income inequality on redistributive policies.
