Cultural sensitive care and its application within the healthcare
Culturally sensitive care is the type of care that reflects the ability to respond
appropriately to the attitudes, feelings, beliefs, and situations of people who share a
common and distinct language, culture, nationality, or race (Brooks, Bloomer &
Manias, 2018). Culturally sensitive care should be designed in such a manner as to
respond to the critical needs and expectations of the targeted group. For example,
when offering care to the Aboriginal, it is vital to tailor the responsibility to respond
to the needs and expectations of the community while at the same time respecting
their language, cultural beliefs, and heritage. Evidence indicates that patients who
perceive the healthcare system to be having a positive influence on them are more
likely to adhere to treatment and hence improving health outcomes (Sharma, Marara,

PURNELL MODEL 3
Townsend & Srinivas, 2018). According to Sharma et al. (2018), low adherence to
recommended treatment can be attributed to limited levels of culture-related
knowledge, skills, and language among the healthcare givers. This, therefore, signifies
the need for healthcare providers to be sensitive about the culture, language, and
traditions of the local people.
Theory and organizational framework of the Purnell Model, its relevance to
transcultural health care
The Purnell model is a model used for studying intercultural competencies in the
healthcare profession. The method uses ideas about culture, people, healthcare as well
as healthcare professionals for evaluation of cultural competence in healthcare.
Purnell D. Larry developed the model and Betty J, Paulanka, to outline and classify
the models which have an impact on the culture of an individual and how it might
affect health provision. The model uses ethnography techniques to encourage nurses
and other healthcare workers to be aware and appreciate the culture of the patients
(Sagar & Sagar, 2018). The Purnell model is highly relevant to transcultural care
because nurses and other professionals in the healthcare sector often find themselves
working in a multicultural environment. The model, therefore, helps nurses to become
culturally competent, which is about being knowledgeable about other cultures.
Cultural competence, in turn, enables nurses to apply personalized healthcare
interventions where needed.
