RECENT BOEING 737 MAX AIRCRAFT ACCIDENTS2
1. Introduction
The recent Boeing 737 MAX Aircraft accidents have formed a tremendous effect in the
airlines industry. The rise of such kind of recent aircraft accidents have led to tremendous
implications. Different kind of failures within the aerodynamic principles have led to the failure
within the systems. It had been reported on 10th March, 2019 that the Ethiopian Airlines Flight
302 had crashed almost a few minutes after it had taken off from Addis Ababa (Wagener & Ison,
2014). The accident had led to the killing of 157 people who were on board. This accident was
followed by the Lion Air Flight 610, which had crashed in Indonesia and had killed 189
passengers along with the crew members.
The report discusses about the brief of the accidents that had occurred over two airline
carriers. It would also provide a brief description for the cause of the accidents. Different kind of
aerodynamic considerations and aviation principles would be discussed that might have been the
possible factors of the accidents.
2. Discussion
2.1 Cause of the Aviation Accidents
The Ethiopian Airlines had took off from Addis Ababa in good weather conditions and
also had clear visibility. According to the captured flight data, it was reported that the flight was
struggling to ascend at a certain stable speed. Hence, the pilot had sent a distress call and thus
was directed to return to the airport. The data captured by the airline carrier has shown much
form of similarity with the Lion Air disaster that had occurred in October (Ethiopian Crash
Report Indicates Pilots Followed Boeing’s Emergency Procedures, 2019). The primary cause of
both of the Boeing airline carriers was that a new flight control system had been installed within

the Max jet series. These are known as Manoeuvring Characteristics Augmentation System
(MCAS). These are defined as a law based on flight control, which would be managed by the
flight control computer. However, there are still some form of unclear sectors that have not been
discovered. These include the findings based on the extent to which the malfunctioning of the
MCAS would had been the result of the emerging crashes.
It was further been reported that the pilots were still in the process of performing each of
the necessary procedures that had been provided by the manufacturer but were not able to control
the flight during the time of the accident (Billings, 2018). However, the investigators who were
researching on the incident based on the flight accidents had analysed that after the take-off
phase of the flight, some of the external sensors that was linked with the MCAS started to
malfunction. Thus, after the malfunction of the MCAS, the sensors started to send various forms
of erroneous information that was being triggered within the system.
In order to ensure that the unintended form of activation of MCAS would not occur
again, the company has been in the plans for releasing a software update patch (Jones et al.,
2014). A supplementary education program and a certain pilot training would be henceforth
provided to the pilots in order to handle critical situations.
2.2 Aerodynamic Considerations or Principles contributing towards the accident
Both of the crashes that had occurred under the Boeing airline carrier, are still in the
process of investigation. The airline authorities are still in the process of finding the exact issue
that had led to the crash of the aircrafts. However, different kind of preliminary reports gathered
from the Indonesian investigators had indicated the both the airline carriers had crashed due to a
faulty sensor that had been triggering erroneous signals (Tavares & De Castro, 2017). The data
reported that the airplane was stalling. The MCAS, which were newly installed within the
