PART 3: RECORDS OF REFLECTION Introduction In this part, we examine how the value stream mapping was carried out and the subsequent reflections on the experience acquired in the course of undertaking the assignment of revising the cost of the project by considering a number of design and material requirements. It should be noted that more often quantity surveying being done is normally in tandem with the project design and scope. The Quantity Surveyor is obligated to follow through with other stakeholders directly involved in the project(Asq.org, 2018). For example, the Quantity Surveyor would often, in consultation with the Design Engineer, develop a bill that would meet the requirements of the project (Shafiei and Said, 2013)Work DoneNotably, in this project, three proposals were pursued and subsequent cost reductions realized against some technical tradeoffs that would unarguably affect the overall project quality in terms of execution time, cost and resources used. As a result of this exercise, the following were tasks carried out to achieve the cost reductions: 1.Waste reduction As part of executing cost reduction techniques, the VSM process focused on reduction of wastes. This is done via recycling of the already used materials. For example in floor filling, the stone mastic from demolished concrete structures can be utilized in this case. Therefore, subsequent cost reductions are realized. It is further recommended that cost

reduction be exploited by substituting with cheaper alternative materials and construction methods. 2.Recycling of wastesAnother key technique of cost reduction is recycling. Initially, the project costing was at 10 237.31 euros. However, the quantities were revised by subsequently reducing the allowable waste from 5 to 4%. This was a huge step of cost savings. There was a cumulative cost reduction of 4.92% realized at the end of the VSM process. 3.Alternative material use The whole project was premised on studying the project design. It was assumed that uniform material quantities would be needed in each level. Learning experience and outcome From the calculations, I discovered that quality of project would often be directly dependent oncost (though partially). As unit quantities are scaled down, the cost of project would move downwards. However, this would often be a trade off. There was a suggestion of using alternative materials which are cheaper. For the ground floor materials, stone mastic was to be used in place of quarry rocks. Additionally, the following were achieved: 1.The needs of the owner were well defined in the process2.There was a better comprehension of the project scope and objectives3.Money and resources saved by 4.92%
