EVOLUTION OF TRAVEL AND TOURISM
The era of Empires (before 14th century)
The beginning of Empire era was started from the
rise of Egyptians and then to the Empire of Greek
and finally ended with the downfall of Roman
Empire. During this time the main purposes for
travelling were religious, educational, commercial
and governmental.
The Modern era (19th century to the present)
In this era the development of mass tourism took place. With
the introduction of paid vacations the leisure travel was made
possible for working and middle class people. The
technological developments in travel and tourism sector were
also happened in this era, like the advent of jet travel to
shorten travel time.
The era of mobility (between 17th and 18th century)
This was the era of growing economic prosperity. This era is also
known for it's increased developments in modes, systems and
speed of travel (rail roads, steam engine ships and roads). Thomas
cook, known as the father of tourism, organised his first trip from
Leicester to Loughborough in 1841, soon he also organised the
famous 'the round the world trip' in 1972. With the invention of
auto-mobile and air-plane the freedom to travel was expanded.
The era of Renaissance (between 14th
and 16th century)
During this era the traders began to
explore and travel farther from their
village for trade, because the church and
the kings and queen began to expand
their territory.
The era of Grand Tour (between 16th and 17th century)
With the beginning of this era, the trend of luxurious travelling
was started by wealthy English travellers. In this era travelling
was developed as a status symbol and it went viral throughout the
Europe. The main objective was to experience and study the art
and science of different parts of the world. It was also known as
the 'Dark era of Tourism'.
