Role of Reflection in Health and Social Care Practice

This presentation discusses the importance of reflective practice in health and social care and how it can enhance the delivered practices. It includes personal accounts and 6 themes of HND. The presentation is based on concrete experiences, reflective observation, abstract conceptualisation, and active experimentation. Following all the six themes of HND enhanced the reflection and helped to become a better healthcare professional.

INTRODUCTION
• Reflective practice refers to the way of studying the self-
experience with the aim of improving the way of work
• It is considered particularly useful for different health
professionals who are expected to participate in continuous
learning, all along their lives (Redmond 2017).
• The act of reflection helps in increasing confidence.

IMPORTANCE
• Reflection in health and social care is imperative for
challenging and enhancing the delivered practices.
• Reflection provided me a way to deal with several sensitive
issues that I had experienced in my practice (Baldwin 2016).
• It also allowed me to look at all discrete phases of
caregiving.
• I was able to decide if I had taken an appropriate action.

6 THEMES OF HND
• The six themes that I took into account during my reflective
practice are as follows:
• Professional attitudes, values, and behavior in health and
social care practice
• Health, Safety and Safeguarding throughout the lifespan and
demonstration of skills and knowledge
• Law, Regulation and Ethical Practice
• Appreciating and endorsing difference, diversity, and
inclusion evidence
• Promoting mental and physical health and wellbeing in health
and social care practice
• Applied mathematics

PERSONAL ACCOUNT
• Theme 1: I tried to explore my attitudes, values and
enhanced my communication skills (Silverman, Kurtz and
Draper 2016).
• Theme 2: I took an effort to empower my patients and
encouraged them to make their own decisions, related to
delivery of care services.
• Theme 3: I was responsible for supervision, teaching and
explored the working of my entire team, while delivering
person-centred care (Glasby and Dickinson 2014).

PERSONAL ACCOUNT
• Theme 4: I took all efforts to understand, accept and value
the differences between all people at my workplace, thus
showing a commitment to diversity (Steers and Sánchez‐
Runde 2017).
• Theme 5: I explored different ways by which I could enable
the subordinates and service users to identify their skills and
interests that they would like to pursue.
• Theme 6: I used applied mathematics while writing
prescriptions and administering medications to the patients
(Tsaneva-Atanasova and Diaz-Zuccarini 2018).

CONCLUSION
• My reflective practice was based on concrete experiences,
reflective observation, abstract conceptualisation, and active
experimentation.
• Following all the six themes of HND enhanced my
reflection and helped me become a better healthcare
professional
• It helped to develop the skills and evaluate their
effectiveness.
