1REFLECTION ON VIOLENCE
Introduction
The roots of the violence have already been discussed. The reasons for violence and
the process to overcome it have also been discussed in the module. Health professionals
should know the reasons for violence and the process to prevent it. They have a major role to
play within their community to prevent violence. In Module 2, categories of violence, their
subtypes and the nature of violence within these subtypes have been introduced to the nursing
students.
The aim of this reflective essay is to describe the importance of the whole unit and the
process by which it is applicable in my personal life.
Change Theory and Action Research
I have been taught Change Theory and Action Research, which has been developed
by Kurt Lewin and this is known as Change Theory of Nursing. He proposed three stages of
change in this nursing theory. I could apply Change Theory to the patients with the violent
behavior. The patients need to go through the three stages of the Change Model to implement
the behavioral difference in their life and the nursing professionals like me should be
responsible for this (Burnes & Cooke, 2013). This theory has helped me to know and
understand the process of the change in the behavioral pattern. According to the father of the
social psychology, Kurt Lewin, unfreezing, change and refreezing are the three phases of
change and these three processes have helped me to learn the different methods to induce the
change in the human system (Burnes & Cooke, 2013).

understand the methods of change. It has also helped them to understand the methods of
implementing the change model into their practices. The action research could be individual
or group activity depending on the professionals and the way they wish to implement their
practices.
Case studies in Violence
I have received the chance to come in contact with the work-related violence case
studies. The Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL) in the United Kingdom developed these
case studies. These case studies have helped me to deal with the real-life incidents. It has
shown the process in which the nursing professionals like me handle the problems of violence
to the lone workers. As there are various case studies and every case has a unique problem,
the nursing professionals would provide a unique solution for each case. The topic, case
studies in violence has also helped me to identify the areas in which the work-related
violence rate is high. These areas have been identified and authenticated by the British Crime
Survey (Hse.gov.uk, 2011). The workers could face violent behavior from the other nurses,
care workers, teachers, and services providers and there are various other areas. The victim of
the violent behavior is definitely a lone worker. The broad discussion of the topic has
illustrated the methods to tackle the problem of violence to the lone worker.
Apart from the methods of handling the violent cases of the lone workers, this topic
has illustrated the benefits and costs of the measures taken to reduce the risks of violence to
me. I have known from this topic the factors, which sometimes reduce the effectiveness of
the measures. There are other case studies, which were commissioned by the World Health
Organization. These case studies have helped me to understand the social determinants of
health that include unequal access to the health system, gender-based violence, domestic
violence, sexual violence, child and maternal health problems. The case studies have shown

different cases of violence from different countries. These cases of violence have arisen in
different countries, however, in all the case studies, the social determinants of the health
remain the common thread (Who.int, 2018).
Personal Experience and Implementation
I experienced abusiveness and family violence when I was a child. My father abused
my mother and me. These are the horrible days and those abusive incidents influenced me so
much that I decided to train myself as a nursing professional who would nurture the issues of
the violent behaviors of the human being. My thoughts were always engaged in search of the
reasons for violence among the humans. Why do some individuals create violence to the
other people whom they consider as weak in the power measure? Undoubtedly, my father
was physically stronger than my mother and me and could it be the reason to dominate
mentally and physically, I wondered.
My childhood abusive incidents have affected me so much that I decided to explore
the roots of the violence in the human being. The whole unit has helped me to identify and
comprehend the reasons for violence and the nature of violence among the human being.
There are genetic, environmental, relational or psychological determinants that could act
separately or in a combined way as the reasons for violence. This is quite difficult to
understand why human beings act violently. The human psychology is complex, however, the
aggression and conflict styles vary across sexes, individuals, societies, genders and era. The
human violence has a long history and the individual whose behavior is violent sometimes is
carrying the element of violent within himself. The conflict arises within the individual and
the violent act is the manifestation of this internal conflict. However, there are social and
evolutionary reasons too that could act as the reasons for violent behavior.

4REFLECTION ON VIOLENCE
I decided to change my father’s action, as his actions cannot be accepted morally. As
a social being, he cannot act violently. As a nursing professional, I should help him to
identify the reason for his violent action and eradicate those reasons rationally from his
behavioral pattern. I decided to apply the Change Theory of Kurt Lewin to treat my father’s
abusive nature. According to me, the unfreezing-change-refreezing theory could be applied in
my father’s case. I have come to know this theory in this unit and I have applied it to my
father. After treating my father for several days, his behavioral pattern has been changed
completely. The unfreezing process has helped him to find a method that has assisted him to
let go the old patterns of his violent behavior. The change process has helped him to change
his thoughts, behavior, feelings or all three, which are more productive or liberating.
Refreezing has helped him to establish the change as the new habit (Shirey, 2013). Applying
the Change Theory, my father was able to establish himself as a non-violent person and this
learning unit has provided me with the opportunity to engage myself in the process of
eradicating violence from the world.
Conclusion
It can be concluded by stating that the module is helpful for me in many ways. It has
exposed different Change Theory and it has been discussed in this paper. The root cause of
the violence and the process to implement the change in the behavioral patterns has been also
discussed widely. This unit is very helpful for the nursing professionals as they could develop
different skills to tackle the violence. Some case studies have helped me to understand the
real-life violent incidents. The different violent incidents have to deal with different
professional skills. I have been exposed to those incidents and that have helped me aligning
my personal experience with them. The unit has helped me to overcome the challenges in my
personal life too.
