Introduction
Gibbs model can be defined as a statement of reflection which facilitates individuals to depict
their learning and experiences through a defined series of phases (Gratton and Gratton, 2020).
The respective report encompasses a reflective account that entails an in depth analysis of the
critical situation encountered by me during my healthcare practice . As a practitioner, I
encountered a critical incident wherein the personal differences and grudges among two of the
team members adversely impacted upon the treatment of patient suffering from cardiac arrest.
Application of Gibbs Model
Description
The team members within the cardiovascular department did not engage well with each other.
There was a serious case of cardiac arrest which required the team leaders to collaborate with
each other in order to treat the patient in an effective manner. Due to personal differences, the
team member were not able to effectively coordinate with each other and it led to severe
arguments and disagreements within the same. The situation worsened when they did not
exchange the essential medication history with each other and let their individual issues come in
between their medical duties and responsibilities. The patient got an allergic reaction due to the
medication provided by one of the respective members and the life of the same was at risk. The
incident marked a major disappointment as it highlighted upon the immaturity of the team
member and ignorance of moral obligation with the healthcare setting.
Feelings
While encountering the concerned incident, I felt extremely pity for the concerned practitioners
as they did not think in the favour of the patient and chose to fight over some irrelevant personal
grudges. As a medical professional, it is the utmost responsibility of the individuals to set aside
their personal issues and concerns and render advance and prominent services for the treatment
of the patients. It was very disappointing to encounter a situation wherein individual differences
guided the behaviour and actions of professionals in the work setting. I feel that the life of the
patient cannot be compromised for such petite issues and concerns. Also, it necessary to punish

the respective practitioners for the act of absolute unwiseness and insensitivity exhibited by the
same.
Evaluation
In context to the given incident, it can be evaluated that the incident resulted in severe
demotivation among the other team members including me who served their full potential in
order to treat the patient. The immaturity and lack of understanding between two practitioners
negatively influenced the working environment of the team. In addition to that, the degree of
coordination and collaborative practices in the team also decreased because of the regular fights
among two of the team members .
Analysis
It can be analysed that the potential reason for the occurrence of this unfortunate incident can be
characterized as the unprofessional behaviour of the practitioners. Moreover, the lack of attention
facilitated to resolving the conflicts among both the practitioners can also be stated as a serious
reason for the conflict generation (Li and et.al, 2020).
Conclusion
As part of a common team, I and other team members should have been more aware about
conflicting energy between two of our peers. We should not have ignored the regular fights and
should have reported the issue to the senior leaders at the right time. I have realised that the
minor conflict and gradually transform into major complications within the team setting. I
believe that as a medical practitioner I need to be more assertive and aware of my surrounding in
order to identify the factors that impact upon my contribution and work within the teams.
Action Plan
The respective incident made me realise the importance of coordination while working within
teams. I helped me understand that one should not let their personal concerns interfere with their
work duties especially in the field of health and social care as it can cost the life of innocents. I
feel that the respective incident may not have occurred if I would have intervened and tried to

facilitate the work relation cordial between both the team members. I believe that I need to be
more responsible in future and try my best to resolve conflicts within the group settings.
Underpinning theories, policies, codes of conduct and legislation which support the reflective
account
Theory
Behaviourist theory can be characterised as a theory which highlights upon the
determination as well as description of the human behaviour. The theory lays concern
over the idea that the behaviour facilitated by the individuals are result of the learning
acquired by the same (Lockey and et.al, 2021). In context to the reflective account, it
can be stated that the behaviour and actions of both the practitioners were guided by their
area of learning.
Social learning theory propounds that it is extremely necessary for the individuals to
observe their social setting and learn from the same in a significant manner. The theory
lays emphasis on the concept of learning through analysis and observing the behaviours,
actions and reaction in given set of situation or circumstances (Olsson, Knapska and
Lindström, 2020). The theory of social learning emphasizes on the ways in which the
existing behaviours as well as environmental factors and forces can shape the behaviour
of an individual.
Policies
As per health and safety policy, it can be stated that the medical professional must
undertake all the safety measures as well as work in accordance with the safety standards
set by the healthcare institutions. The reason for the same can be sated as the need to
ensure that the health and safety of the patients are not compromised by the ignorance of
the safety compliance regulated by the healthcare setting (McGuier and et.al, 2021).
The person centred approach must be followed within the work setting so as to accelerate
the standards of service quality within the same. The aspect of coordination as well as
integrated care is an important attribute which leads to the effective implementation of
person centred approach in the field of health care. It can be said that the concerned
approach facilitates several leverages to the medical practitioners in an optimum manner

which enhance their quality of operations and improve their performances within the
workplace setting.
Code of Conduct
The heath care practitioners are required to exchange crucial and essential information
with their peers, managers and superiors in case of any risk determination (Aldakheel,
2021). It is important for each and every practitioner to convey necessary messages so as
to advance the process of exchange of information in an appropriate manner.
The medical practitioners must take full responsibility for their actions and decisions
within the work setting.
A discipled environment must prevail at the healthcare setting and all the practitioners
must oblige to the polices and procedures formulated by the health care administration in
an appropriate and considerate manner.
In heath and social care serves, it is very necessary for the medical teams to work in
coordination and cooperation in order to maintain the quality and standard of health care
operations in a proficient manner.
Legislation
Control of substances hazardous to health
In the heath and social care sector, it very crucial for the practitioner to comply with the
respective act in order to ensure the safety of the patients at the healthcare setting. As per the
given act, the medications should be non-hazardous to the wellness of a patient (Cherrie, Semple
and Coggins, 2021). The medical professional must ensure that sanitised material and
appropriate medication are facilitated to the patients.
