1REFLECTIVE ESSAY ON CLINICAL THEMES
Introduction
As a nurse in the clinical field, it comes up with different challenges and practices for
me. The practical experiences in this professional field I met with certain clinical themes in
practice. Certain clinical themes have been brought in to the practice for a better
understanding of the clinical field and nursing practices. Clinical themes share pieces of
advice and information regarding practices for controlling infections, administration of
medications, communication with individuals taking care for the patient, ethical rights, the
policies and procedures for Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) registered
nurses with National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) standard of practice and
focusing towards personal working experience and developing efficiency. The following
essay reflects on my clinical placement experience, which helped me in understanding these
clinical themes and describe that how I brought them into practice, which describes, the
feelings regarding its impacts, a keen evaluation regarding the pros and cons of these clinical
themes, overall conclusion and a plan of action regarding proper implementation of these
themes.
Description
The theme of practices of controlling infection describes precautions taken towards
contagious infections. The precautions I implemented after I faced the failure to maintain the
hand hygiene is that during my clinical placement experience are either standard precautions
or precautions based on the transmission of infections. Standardized precautions included
proper hygiene, providing equipment for personal care and the control for environmental
hazards. The precautions for transmission based infections I practiced to reduce are
transmission through air, through droplets and direct or indirect contact which I made
possible by applying masks and gloves during my practice (Www2.health.vic.gov.au, 2019).

Another theme is the administration of the medication, which is also one of the prime duties
of mine. I saw my supervisor faced problems while not maintaining proper dosages as it
enhanced the side effects of dosages. Medication relates to the proper attention of the
scenarios through which the patient has been in his past medical and health complications.
The terms of proper medication administration also include proper washing of hands before
medication. The right time for the proper dosage, maintaining proper route medium and
dosage for the individual and having a proper look over the documented prescription before
the implementation of any drug or any other minor instrumentation care to the individual
(dhhs.nh.gov, 2011); which I did during my practice while my clinical practicing experience.
However, another theme that holds the nurses practicing in the clinical fields should be
registered under the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) and hence must
meet the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) standard of practice
(Agyeman-Yeboah, & Korsah., 2018). The registration at NMBA states that I, as a nurse, is
well developed in clinical practices of nursing and aware of the codes and regulations
required for abiding by the profession of nursing and midwifery.
On the other hand, NSQHS standards are set up in collaboration with the Australian
Government to deliver better and quality nursing services (Safetyandquality.gov.au, 2019).
Communication with individuals around the client also turns up to be a practice of the
nursing profession to regularise a smooth medication administration for the client or the
patient. I had to make such communication with such individuals, which included interaction
with the family members of the patient and providing knowledge about the health status of
the patient along with the proper medications and their patient’s dosages. It also required
interaction with housekeeping staff to maintain proper hygiene of the atmosphere in which
the patient is residing in. In addition, focusing on personal qualities to develop ourselves

understanding of the client's needs along with understanding the time, quantity and quality of
the dosages required for proper restoration of health of the client (Jasemi et al., 2017).
However, one more theme persists, which is ethically working in the clinical field. The
ethical working also shows honesty and how dutiful as a nurse, I can be when needed. It asks
for the challenge at the toughest of situations when I would have needed to perform.
Feelings
Being a nurse, I tried developing such qualities during the tenure of my practice,
which may help me holding me up as a nurse or as a health care servant. The tenure taught
me the application of the clinical themes as well as adapting them within me. Control for
infections is the first measure, and it requires not only in the field of clinical practice but also
requires in managing a healthy family. My responsibility was of healthcare which always
begins with the place we reside in. The application of medication administration is among
one more clinical theme that I practiced effortlessly to understand and deliver properly
throughout my profession. It not only made me eligible to practice this in the clinical field but
had allowed me to make people understand how a person can go through a healthy lifestyle.
However, nursing qualities in a person can be possible, but registering myself as a nurse in
the society needs NMBA registration. I feel like NMBA registration permits me as a nurse to
prove my standards as per the NSQHS standards to provide a quality lifestyle and fast health
recovery chart to their clients. Thus qualifying as an NMBA registered nurse proves the
capability of our health care providing service as a genuine and non-questionable. Though the
client is the priority for care as a nurse, it has always been our duty to interact with
individuals around the client to ensure the care for after effects when they are being moved
away from the health care facility. However, the end challenge I felt is ethical working as a
nurse. Often the ethical working had barred several nurses including me in doing humanity to
reduce the pain of the patients to save their life (kim., 2018).

4REFLECTIVE ESSAY ON CLINICAL THEMES
Evaluation
Evaluating the themes, I found both aspects of good and bad sides. Ethical working
has always been in a dilemma to m work for humanity or to save the client. I also felt that
there stood certain chances where I saw health care professionals had been asked by their
superiors to take a wrong path which might be unethical. Choosing such a path is always our
responsibility either to opt for or not. Moreover, I experienced being with one of my
colleague that medication administration has shown dark sides of its improper dosage and
improper timing of dosage which have proved fatal and had been a resisting fact by the
patient’s family members. Thus, proper medicines and dosages need to be maintained within
the proper time (Felton, & Royal., 2015). However, it always has been a view of mine that to
maintain a proper practice we must be reaching and constantly maintaining by our standards
of service as a nurse which can be maintained as per maintaining the NSQHS standards and
after the practice of the third week, I felt like almost meeting the standards.
Evaluating the controls for infections, I felt it is among the most critical issues
affecting the health of the patients, and alone a nurse cannot practically make controls to
resolve it. The need stands to communicate with multidisciplinary facility staff to bring in a
measure to control and maintain proper hygiene of the environment of the patient (Delaney.,
2018).
Analysis
Analyzing the themes, it comes to a concern that, for being an effective healthcare
professional, I feel that the first step starts with abiding by these clinical themes.

of maintaining the care for the client whenever it comes to the concern for proper dosage and
proper hygiene. However, ethical issues prevail at every step, but I felt cure and prevention
had always been the priority and hence maintaining so helped in avoiding unethical paths. In
addition, I felt that if a nurse caring for an individual is registered under NMBA, then the care
they provide stays unquestionable as it is being considered that they are maintaining the
standards of NSQHS while doing their profession.
Conclusion
Therefore, it can be concluded that if I, as a healthcare professional, maintain and
abide by the clinical themes can prove to be one best personnel among their community.
Even, the tenure of my practice made me as a nurse who can now cope more with these
clinical aspects and hence makes me more eligible for my profession. However, challenges
lie but overcoming those challenges and aligning those through all the clinical criteria makes
a smooth flow of the profession. Moreover, not only the smooth flow relies on how much I
maintain the standard of the health care service but how much I can make people have a
belief in me.
Action Plan
The plan of action I prefer for these clinical aspects is the formulation of a survey and
creating awareness for the same. The control for infection needs awareness among those
members with whom the client spends most of their leisure time. It also a concern for the
client as well as the individuals who are benefitted with the knowledge. In addition, I felt that
the knowledge of medical administration needs to be served to all the individuals who share
their personal space with the patient. This helps the patient to recover soon, even in the
absence of health care professionals like us. Although the practice of nursing runs on ethics,
the challenge lies when the point comes to avoid it. Making the client and their family
