REFLECTIVE ESSAY
Gibbs reflective model- this model is proposed by Graham gibbs in 1988. The model is used to
describe experience of individual and what is being learned from it. Similarly, I used this model
to reflect my experience of providing treatment to Don.
Description - A 8 year patent Don was suffering from the disease called Anaemia. He was
facing the issues with his lag and because of the lag pain he was not able to attend his school he
was not able to play his favourite sport football and most of the time his mom was making the
pain go ways from the Don by using the paracetamol (Cooper, 2018). I am a haematology
clinical nurse who was noticed by the Don's mom, and I was noticed by her mother during the
routine and I came to know about the Don who is facing the problem. When I here are see about
the Don, I get into the shock because he was just a 8 years old school boy who is suffering from
the Anaemia. He was already 2 times admitted to the hospital within 1 moth and in just a 8 years
old age its so hard to suffer from the Anaemia. Anaemia is the decrease in the total amount of
red blood cells (RBCs) or haemoglobin in the blood, or a lowered ability of the blood to carry
oxygen. When anaemia comes on slowly, the symptoms are often vague and may include feeling
tired, weakness, shortness of breath, and a poor ability to exercise and because of it Don's leg
tissues are damaged, and he feels extreme pain in his legs and because of it he is not able to walk
and if he do not get the treatment then he can also face the mantel illness and other problems.
hydroxycarbamide which is also known by the Hydroxylate that I will use for the treatment of
Don. These medicines have so befits and some disadvantage. It will help to change the blood to
reduce the frequently of sickle cell crises and it will help to cover the leg of the Don but it can
take times to show the result.
Feeling- After the consultancy and task with the Don I started felt that don's pain is affecting my
own life and this recurrent painful episode is giving the negative impact on my daily activities.
Because of that I felt that I should provide him immediate treatment, so he can recover. I feel
negative impact on my daily activities because when don express his feeling in front of me, his
voice was painful, and I was able to feel his pain and understand that how he was feeling that
time and after we over when I reach my home I was not able to concentrate on my work and
daily activities for the same days. Then I consult with the Expert about the problems and decease
that Don was facing. I give e advice to give him hydroxycarbamide for treatment of Anaemia so
his muscles can be recovered, and he can overcome from the lag pain that Don was facing, and

he will able to go to the school again. Expert also tell me about some negative impact of the
hydroxycarbamide and positive as well (Khan, , Barnett,. and Assaly, 2017). Some of the
negative impact of the hydroxycarbamide is that including the Stomach pain, Diarrhea, and long
term treatment with the hydroxycarbamide is associated with the painful Ulcers, skin infections
etc. benefits of the hydroxycarbamide are it helps to reduce pain episodes and the need for blood
transfusions in people with sickle cell anaemia.
Evaluation- While treating Don I found that hydroxycarbamide is medication that is given to
treat sickle cell disease. Also, it is known as chemotherapy drug that is given to cancer patient.
Thus, gathered a lot of info about it (Botelho, 2020). I developed a plan so that I am able to
provide better and high quality treatment to Don. This will be useful for him to get cure from
sickle cell disease. Within plan I wrote down dose of medicine and time at when it is to be given.
As I have only heard about hydroxycarbamide from friend. This is necessary from because it will
help me to give proper dose of medicine to Don. Here, my experience was both good and bad.
Good was that I prepare a plan so it was easy for me to treat Don. However, bad was that I was
not having any knowledge about that are pros and cons of hydroxycarbamide. Also, I did not do
blood test and took continuous clinical review of Don. Hence, I was not able to evaluate his
overall condition. As I was not able to find out what are its pros and cons thus I was nervous. i
was not sure that how this will benefit Don in relieving pain and what is its outcomes. So, this
affected my performance in providing hydroxycarbamide treatment to Don.
Analysis- here, during treating of Don I analyse many things about entire situation. In that I
found that I observed level of pain during sickle cell disease. Moreover, Don was continuously
complaining about pain which he was feeling in his legs. Hence, I got to know that pain is
common symptom which Don was doing. Therefore, in order to reduce pain I gave him
hydroxycarbamide from time to time. Alongside, I analysed that pain occurs in sickle cell due to
red blood cell block flow of blood through tiny blood vessels in many parts of body that is chest,
abdomen and joints. So, it results in pain in leg of Don (Faller, Lundgren, and Marsick, 2020).
So, in this case I examined that pain killer is not useful in it. This is because it only help in
giving relief from moderate pain. But Don pain was intense as he was suffering from sickle cell
disease. Hence, in this case, hydroxycarbamide is suitable treatment that need to be given to him.
I analysed that this is highly useful in treating it. Therefore, it was intense situation for me as I
have to deal with it. I examined different reasons that why this pain occurs.

Conclusion - From the whole treatment and patent I have learned that treatment not only done
by the medicines but it also need proper care to the patent's and that I applied, so I was able to
help- Don to recover from his pain. I follow proper process and did treatment after taking the
advantage from the expert who tell me about the hydroxycarbamide and also tell me about te
positive and negative impact of the hydroxycarbamide (Carrington,., Dickinson and Watson,
2018). I provide this medicine to the Don according to the prescription by the hospital expert and
take care of him. Proper action plan was prepared to provide effective treatment to the Don that
helps his to get the proper treatment from me and after the moths of treatment of the Son.
Medicine shows positive result but I also negative some negative impact but after sometimes,
Don was able to overcome from the negative imp-act of the hydroxycarbamide, and he was able
to walk and go to the school. Mostly he was happy because now he can play his favorite sport.
Action plan – I found that I need to develop an action plan for future so that I can face similar
situation easily. Hence, first of all is I will collect and gather all relevant info about medicine that
is given to patient. Besides that, I will note down all pros and cons of hydroxycarbamide and
how it can led to effect on patient health. Moreover, I will introduce importance of
hydroxycarbamide to be given to children and what is main purpose. In that the info which I
include is how it reduces pain and blood transfusion. In addition to it, various other benefits as
well that is how it increases flexibility (San Antonio. and Gorelick, 2020). Hence, by gaining of
enough knowledge about hydroxycarbamide I will be easily able to deal with patient situation
and take proper measures. Along with it, I will also change the method or way of giving
treatment to patient. Therefore, it will highly help me to analyse things and then decision. As I
will be having in depth knowledge of hydroxycarbamide. Apart from it, I will improve my
research and analysis skills as well so that it help me in my professional growth. I will be having
in depth knowledge about treating of sickle disease, hydroxycarbamide and its impact. I will give
overview, effects, etc. of hydroxycarbamide to children, their parents so that in critical condition
proper measure is taken. Also, I can do blood test and took continuous clinical review of Don.
Hence, I will evaluate his overall condition.
