1REFLECTIVE JOURNALSummary of the article:The article by Stephen Tomsen gives an insight into the relations between masculinityand culture of drinking violence in society. Through the ethnographic study of assaults in publicdrinking venues, the author has highlighted about subjective experience of participation indrinking violence. Violence in drinking location was found to have strong association with socialvariables such as aggressiveness of bouncers, rate of drunkenness and presence of number ofmale groups. The study finding rebutted direct link between drinking and violent actions becausein some occasions high rate of drinking and little violence was also observed. Hence, this meansthat violence is linked not only to drinking, but also to different social context of people. Involatile social setting, the collective drinking is necessary for people to display their social powerin society and for some violence was an expression of masculinity. Therefore, different socialperspective affected the drinking rate and rate of violence in community. The study mainly gave the reason that people engaged in violence incidents for theprotection of male honor. In addition, drinking style between different cultures also affected theviolence rates. The main conclusion from the study was that although no direct link betweenviolence and use of alcohol has been found, however complex association has been foundbetween the collective process of drinking and incidents of public violence. Violence has beenfound more in rowdy drinking group and a culture empowered by masculine identity. Despitethis evidence, it is difficult to completely denounce violent behavior in drinking places due tocultural resistance and preference to display masculinity.
