Learning Outcomes 1: Explain the historical impact of engineering on society
What?
Engineering plays a vital role in influencing the societies outline or shape. Its
generally believed that engineers work with electronics, different designs and
especially machines but they even utilize technology, maths, and science to carry
out various inventions with innovations that improve societies outline by
improving the manner of living and working. It’s a duty of an engineer to assure
various new opportunities emerging in the society leaving a positive impact.
Engineers are capable of converting the gained knowledge from science and
technology into a valuable and tangible thing for society.
So What?
Engineering is a boon to the society in following ways:
Various means of transport are developed by the engineers making the
migration of people easier and simpler. A person can travel from one city to
another in the minimal time period. Like automobiles, airplanes etc.
Engineers have developed dams that reduce the arrival of floods along with
providing better water supply and are a clean source of generating energy.
Several amazing building and structures are built providing livelihood to
many and also roads are developed making the country well built.
Engineers developed products related to a household making the work of
lady easier and unproblematic.
Engineers invented several methods of increasing the production of food by
enlarging vegetables, crops, and fruits.
Engineers developed products to improve or preserve the conditions of the
environment by decreasing pollution.

Engineers even provide knowledge regarding human genome, genetic
mutations, and DNA.
Engineers play a vital role to make a business profitable as they introduce an
approach to business by improving the customer services and quality
enhancement.
Engineers developed different technologies reducing the human effort and
making the process faster and speedy.
Engineers are good decision makers and provide effective solutions for
business. They even introduced an application where all records can be
maintained and viewed just by a search making it reliable, speedy, efficient
and also reduces the cost.
Engineers even have improved the interpersonal relationships and
communication among the organization and clients.
Engineering is a bane to the society in following ways:
Engineers perform some genetic experiments which are life-threatening,
horrifying and dangerous.
Engineers build up dams due to which many farmlands are destroyed,
aquatic animals are endangered and even take away many people’s
livelihood.
Inventions made by engineers are simplifying the lives but also decreasing
the quality of the environment by causing a lot of pollution.
Development of windmills as a clean means of energy by engineers causes
atmospheric disturbance and increase in temperature.
Different chemical and nuclear weapons developed by engineers proves to
be a means to massive destruction.

Inventions made by engineers are simplifying the lives but also making
people lazy.
Engineers perform some genetic experiments which can lead to a risk of
some health or birth associated problems.
Engineers develop automobiles that made the migration easier but cause
atmospheric pollution.
Some luxury associated products are introduced by engineers like AC’s and
refrigerators that damage the ozone layer that protects us from harmful UV
rays.
What else?
According to me, engineers are very important part of our society because of the
invention they made is used by society on day to day basis. Inventions of various
means of transport made it easy for people to travel from one place to another. The
invention of mobile phones made it easy for people to communicate even from
long distances. Some luxury based products like AC’s were also introduced by
Engineers making it the basic necessity of people. If I take an example of my
university engineers developed computer application where all records and details
of students, as well as staffs, are stored. It not only reduced the time but also made
the process simpler.
What now?
While going through the topic I gained knowledge about the engineering impact on
society and I will apply this gained knowledge and my skills to decrease the
negative impacts of engineering on society. There must be introduced few rules
stating that the nuclear and chemical weapons can only be sold to government or to
people having written permission by the government. The people who lost their
livelihood during the time of dam formation must be provided with proper places
to live and products must be introduced that don’t cause harm to the atmospheric
conditions as well as ozone layer and must be used.

Learning Outcomes 2: Explain engineering professionalism and ethics in the
Australian contexts
What?
Professionalism in Engineering is not a knowledge which can be learned or
accumulated; it is a way of thinking or living. By introducing few rules or by
defining ethics professionalism can’t be taught. Some rules of ethics define one’s
responsibility and loyalty towards a society of Australia and Professionalism in
Engineering. Professionalism leads to a better attitude of working and also
motivated people to deliver their highest contribution towards society. It comprises
of the relationship between client and employee, their behavior and how they
enhance society.
So What?
Engineering ethics and professionalism proves to be a boon for Australia in
following ways;
Engineering ethics and professionalism enhances the worth and stability of a
professional.
Practicing Engineering ethics and professionalism allows employees an
opportunity to better serve clients with good convincing power and in a
polite manner.
Engineering ethics and professionalism are considered to improve or
enhance the profile of professional.
Use of Engineering ethics and professionalism sets an ideal or benchmark
for perfect and best professional.
Engineering ethics and professionalism are used to generate an ethical
conduct.
Use of Engineering ethics and professionalism introduced effective ways to
deal with or to resolve raised issues and problems.
Engineering ethics and professionalism are also adopted as it encourages or
motivates professionals.
Engineering ethics and professionalism helps to spread awareness among
people regarding a particular issue.

job security during company’s downfall.
Following Engineering ethics and professionalism helps people to gain great
incentives and better facilities.
Engineering ethics and professionalism enhances one's relationship with
clients and helps in developing more public relations.
Engineering ethics and professionalism proves to be a boon for Australia in
following ways;
Engineering ethics and professionalism produces groups that generate dirty
politics in offices.
Practicing Engineering ethics and professionalism decreases the closeness
between employees.
Engineering ethics and professionalism generates different conflicts based
on employee’s interest.
Engineering ethics and professionalism reduces the personal interest of both
employee and client.
Practicing Engineering ethics and professionalism decreases the efficiency
of making prompt decisions.

Practicing Engineering ethics and professionalism used to occupy more time
of an employee.
Engineering ethics and professionalism comprises of some legal and lengthy
formal method which is complex.
Engineering ethics and professionalism reduces the secrecy of any company.
Engineering ethics and professionalism generates less profit as employees
are indulged in professionalism putting fewer efforts in works.
What else?
According to me, engineering ethics and professionalism proves to be beneficial on
day to day basis. I analyze it as my teachers in university also practices engineering
ethics and professionalism defined by the university. Their politeness and humble
behavior depict their professionalism. They serve us good by answering to all
generated queries and are very responsible towards their work. They continuously
motivate us for more improvement. By practicing all rules they enhance the
working of the university and are rewarded with appraisal and promotions. They
are even granted with very good facilities by the university.
What now?
While going through the topic I gained knowledge about the engineering ethics and
professionalism and I will apply this gained knowledge and my skills to decrease
the negative impacts of engineering ethics and professionalism. There must be
introduced few methods to make all employees work collectively as a team and to
abolish the formation of the group in companies. Equal concentration must be
given to sincerity in work and ways must be introduced to eliminates possibilities
of frauds.
