Why is the issue of refugees and asylum seekers a concern for the Australian society as a whole?
Find statistics and relevant information on their grief and suffering. Why does this matter
for Australians?
Refugees are the people who have faced fled violence, war, conflict or persecution and
have crossed an international border to find safety in another country. They have flee with low
basic essentials and are willing to get settled. They are the people who have left their homes and
profession because of uncertain event. Asylums are the people who also left their country in
order to seek protection from serious human rights (Due, Aldam and Ziersch, 2020). Also, they
have not been recognised refugee and is waiting to receive a decision on their asylum claim.
There is long history of refugees and asylums seen in Australia. There are certain complexities
that are arising. The challenges are faced by the developing company. The country is universally
challenging. They are unable to maintain balance among the national borders. United Nations
High Commissioner for Refugees was being established in 1951. At that time there were around
1.5 million refugees. At the end of 2009 it was observed that there were estimated 43.3 million
forcibly displaced people worldwide, that includes 15.2 million refugees, 983 000 asylum
seekers and 27.1 million internally displaced persons. There are people of different background
being observed by the people. The people use different language and the housing facility for
them is also not available. All the people are unable to coordinate with each other and that
enhances the issue more. There are small proportion of asylum applicants in Australia arrive by
boat and else arise from air (Procter, et.al., 2021). Some of them are registered under UNHCR
and others are not. There are some of them that come through unauthorised criteria and that also
enhances the problem. It is now problematic for the people who are living in Australia as they
are not legally recognised. These people face risk related the trauma and violence. It is seen that
this is an issue that is being faced by Australian society as a whole. There is unavailability of
family access and places to live for these people. They are not given any status and at the same
time there is problem that impacts the society as a whole.
What can lawyers do to help asylum seekers? How can lawyers contribute legal assistance to
asylum seekers? List and discuss relevant steps that lawyers can take to overcome the issue
of refugees and asylum seekers.
