Regulation 2
Introduction
Regulations are a set of rules by an institutional body or a government to control the way
activities within the organization are conducted or rather to control people’s behavior is
monitored (Solomon 2017). Nursing on the other hand is a professional body whose members
are regulated under some registered standards or set guidelines which are mandatory for all the
nurses to measure their competency and for accountability purposes.
In Australia, all the nurses are registered under the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia
(NMBA) to measure their competency and standards (Henwood et al 2015). This body however
replaced the Enrolled nurse competency standard that was initially used in Australia. The
regulation of the nursing profession was started as a very simple process in order cover the
nursing image as well as what the public would say. However, in the recent years, the main aim
of the regulation is still to protect the public by defining exactly what it entails in terms of
nursing education and competency by licensing them and establishing disciplinary rules and
regulations to govern them under the State Boards of Nursing. The board is responsible for staff
placement, assigning of duties and provision of quarterly reports of incompetent nurses whose
licenses are later revoked.
It’s therefore the responsibility of every nurse in Australia to understand the regulations that
directly affect their practices and also to provide services that meet the standards of the health
care environment requirement despite the several challenges they might be facing in their day to
day duties including pressure from the regulatory body to be up to date with their work licenses
to maintain the safety of all patients.

Importance of Regulation in Nursing
The regulation standards set by the nursing profession body are significantly important in
guiding all clinical practices for example clinical safety and proficiency. They are on the other
hand used in providing frameworks for the clinical standards that should be met in monitoring
specific employee and their work habits or a clinical department. The professionally set
standards usually explain the competent level of health care in each level of the nursing stages.
On the other hand, they do give an image of a desirable and attainable level of performance
compared to that of an individual nurse (Reid et al 2016). This is basically to maintain and
improve the professional standards that are clinically accepted for competent nurses.
These professional nursing regulation standards are on the other hand important since they
guide and promote all clinical practices as they are used as an evaluation tool of reference for all
staff of the institution to promote clinical proficiency as well as safety. The professional nursing
regulatory standards as greatly important as they are used to come up with a framework for
creating competency checklist that all the nurses refer to during evaluations within the specific
clinical units or within the whole health care providing institution. On the other hand, they are
used as compression tools by the practicing health providers and the employer to evaluate a
nurse’s services in case the employer suspects the nurse has developed poor working habits not
within the established organization’s set rules and regulations. This can considerably cause the
termination of the nurse or the practicing license can be revoked after facing disciplinary actions
(Scrymgeour, Smith and Paton 2016).
Nursing regulation standards assists the organization’s management officials and other
healthcare organization to relate well within the working environment during the assignment of
