As a student nurse, self regulation is very essential in learning and attainment of my curriculum goals and objectives. Self-regulation will help me gain different skills, all of which are necessary for positive classroom behavior by understanding my own abilities and needs, setting my own reasonable goals, coming up with plans to achieve these goals as well as monitoring my own performances and evaluating them in relation to the goals. Baumeister (2014) argues that self-regulation helps inhibit impulses and distractions. Additionally, self- regulation will help me think and act strategically so as to solve problems, flexibly shift from one activity, though or strategy to another, transfer skills from one situation to another and also learn from consequences. The specific skills that are gained from self-regulation include emotional self-regulation, behavioral self-regulation and cognitive-self-regulation (Bisholt, Ohlsson, Engström, Johansson and Gustafsson 2014). Emotional self-regulation will help me learn how to manage the manner in which I express my emotions for instance frustrations that may hinder me from concentrating in class related activities. According to Denissen, van Aken, Penke, and Wood (2013), emotional self-regulation enhances an individual’s long-term wellbeing, improves performance in all activities, enriches personal relationships and can lead to better overall health. Thus, regulating my emotions through problem solving, assertion of oneself as well as reappraisal of the issue will help prevent and escalation of issues to regrettable situations. Behavioral self-regulation on the other hand will help me gain control over my actions. As a nursing student, controlling my behaviors is very important so as to avoid misinterpretation of situations. This will help me learn to control my impulses by behaving I appropriate manner and

Finally, cognitive-self-regulation will help me follow rules and principles so as to plan out appropriate responses. According to a study conducted by Santosh, Roy, Kundu (2015), cognitive self-regulation is a predictor of social functioning. As a student nurse, I need to enhance my social skills by being an effective communicator, cognitive self-regulation will therefore help me to develop constructive behaviors to help me control my mental strategies for better cognitive performances. Conclusion Regulation in nursing is very essential as it helps ensure safe and competent practice of nursing. Through licensing and accreditations, regulations oversee the competence of nurses so as to avoiding putting patients into risks. Regulation helps the nurses understand the nursing practice acts, so that they may be able to deliver quality of care. Additionally, regulation in nursing is important because it ensures that patients receive safe care by defining violations and how to prevent the spread of diseases. Self-regulation on the other hand empowers individuals to be able to think, act and behave in a socially acceptable manner. This is especially important to nursing students.
