Introduction:
Rehabilitation of the offenders is essential as they help them in educating the offenders so
that they can lead their life typically (Craissati, 2018). The essay involves the case study of the
patient who has been imprisoned for the sexual assault offence. Peter is a 49-year-old man who
has been working as a scoutmaster. He has been arrested after getting several complaints from
the former scouts. Twelve former scouts who used to learn scouts from peter had claimed that
they had been sexual abuse and assaulted by peter during their practice session. Apart from being
a scout practitioner, he is also used to preach at church and is actively involved in the safety
house programs also. After completing two years sentence, he feels guilty for his offences and
wants to return to his previous life and want to continue with the activities related to church and
safety house program he used to do before. Though, he was feeling guilty regarding his offence
but has accepted that he has a specialized attachment with children, especially for boys.
Rehabilitation in case of such offenders is proved to be active and helped them in living their life
with respect and dignity.
Assessment:
Rehabilitation of the offenders are done to reduce the crime rates of the offenders who
are on the release from the custody or on the community sentences. They face coordinated as
well as the tough response from the community, probation and the police services. Offenders
who feel guilty for their offences and want to spend the rest of their life as ordinary people are
usually rehabilitated (Fortune, Ward & Mann, 2015). In the rehabilitation service, they get a
chance to learn new skills that help them to survive usually. In the rehabilitation of the offenders,
the specific needs of the individual, such as the criminogenic needs should be considered
(Cullen & JL-LEVRANT, 2017). The essay focusses primarily on the behavioural problems of

the individual and also aims to address the criminogenic needs of the offenders. Apart from this,
the factor which is related to the onset of the offending behaviour of the individual and
maintenance of that behaviour.
Conceptualization:
In the case study, the behaviour of the peter identified in the case study can be
conceptualised by using the different theoretical models. As from the case study, it is evident that
peter has been exposed to sexual assault at a very young age. His uncle used to abuse him
sexually, and he knows how it feels to be abused or assaulted by someone sexually. When Peter
has been arrested, he seems to be guilty of the crime has been committed, but has accepted the
fact that he has a special place in his heart for boys.
Social learning theory is the theory that defines socialization and its impact on the
development of the individual. According to the social learning theory, the identity of the person
is formed in response to the external stimuli, which includes social incentives (Akers, 2017).
Peter was also sexually molested by his relative in his childhood, which created a negative
impact on his development. Due to this, after spending some time in prison, he realised his
mistake and was guilty of that. He had also tried several times to kill himself due to his awful
sin. He also stated that he has a particular affinity for the children, especially for the boys and
because of that, he was very guilty about the crime.
By observing the behaviour of the peter, it is noted that peter is feeling guilty for his
shameful sin. Before the criminogenic event, he works as a respectful person of the community
and now again want to return to his standard. Though he was aware of his crime, there is specific
behaviour observed in peter which needs treatment.

Treatment/rehabilitation program:
Rehabilitation is the therapy that is used to provide support to the individual suffering
from any illness or any depression to make them capable enough to gain employment.
Rehabilitation in the case of offenders is done for the individual who are convicted to prison due
to any criminal offence (Fortune, Ward & Mann, 2017). Those individuals experience
complication in gaining employment after completing the sentence period. Hence to do that,
rehabilitation programs are necessary that make them capable enough to gain employment
quickly (Howard, 2017).
Before getting into prison, peter used to work as a scoutmaster. Apart from these, he also
works as a preacher in the local church and is also actively involved in the community program
named as safety house program. After talking with peter, it has been observed that he desperately
wants to return to his previous life and to engage himself in the church work. Based on his
behaviour, a sexual behaviour clinic rehabilitation program is recommended to him.
Before providing the chance to an offender to re-enter into the society, it is necessary to
change the thought process that makes them more comfortable to adapt themselves to the
thinking perspective of the community. Cognitive behavioural therapy is one of the most
common treatments that have been used in rehabilitating an offender. It assists the criminals to
discover and modify the thinking perspective, which was responsible for the maladaptive
behaviours (Hollin, 2019). It emphasises the personal accountability of the offenders and also
aids the offenders to understand the choices and the thoughts which led to the crime and to
overcome from such behaviour different, they are educated with the thought process and
