1 Introduction
The purpose of this report to discuss the potential of IOT technology more from a consumer and
lifestyle perspective and it will discuss the common IOT products that can be used in one’s living
area. Apart from it, this report will also discuss the various issues related to IOT like control
issues, data storage issues, security issues and much more as well as the solutions that can
minimize the impact of these issues.
2 IOT & Home Network
IOT has pervaded every aspect of life and it has potential to be used in most of the things
that one uses in his life (Perera 2017). IOT improves day-to-day living as it makes the life easy
and convenient. However, there are certain issues in the smart homes that should be addresses.
The general issues in smart homes would include privacy, security and availability. My home
network can be discussed as below:
3 Home Networking: My Dwelling
The devices in my dwelling can be discussed as:
1. Lock system
Many companies have developed the smart auto lock system that are keyless and
uses mobile applications and can be integrated with most of the hardware. With this
system, it becomes quite easy to lock and unlock the doors without carrying keys by just
using mobile phone. There are also options of generating keys for guests that will be
valid for hours to days depending on the duration of the guest visit. This will be very

convenient and there is no need to carry number of keys, you just need your mobile
phone. The issues can be discussed as:

important issue.
Connectivity There is a connectivity issue of infrastructure. How will one make the
use of lock system when there is no Internet?
Security There is a security issue of data compliance. It is one of the most
important issues.
Privacy There is a serious issue of privacy of data. Most of these smart
products depend on the mobile phones and thus mobile phone
becomes very powerful and capable of controlling almost every
aspect of life. Thus, what will happen if someone lost his mobile
phone, how such emergencies will be handled (Oravec, 2017).
Solutions:
The three key solutions are:
i. Use of firewall
ii. Use of antivirus systems

iii. Use of extra layer of scanning like IRIS scanner, voice controller etc.
It would be best if common standards are used among the products (Zahra, Brewer, &
Cooper, 2017).
2. Home Lighting systems
Philips has launched its hue mobile app which is very easy to install and control
the lights of your entire home. This has real application because sometimes we are not in
home and remember that we forgot to switch off the lights. This app will come handy.
Also, this app can record our patterns and schedules and can then uses its intelligence for
the same. With it, same bulb can be red, blue yellow and so on.

types of lights in the home.

important issue.
Connectivity There is a connectivity issue of infrastructure. The lighting systems
could be slow to react
Security There is a security issue of data compliance. Now, Apps like Google
store their data on clouds and there are many different backup copies
maintain that are stored at other parts (Han, Crespi, 2017). Thus, it is
very important for the vendors to clarify such open questions.
Privacy There is a serious issue of privacy of data.

The key solutions are:
i. Use of firewall
ii. Use of antivirus systems on top of lighting systems software.
Philips Light systems should integrate with all the coffee machines irrespective of the
brand. Nike has launched their smart watch only on iOs and not on Android and it may
result in multi levels of collaboration.
3. Thermostat
Nest was one of the pioneers in creating IOT enabled thermostat however they are
acquired by Google. These thermostats can be operated from anywhere using the app and
thus think of a situation where you turn on Thermostat just before few minutes before
reaching home. In these smart thermostats, there is no need to set temperatures, based on
the time of the day and your preference, it will automatically control the temperature and
if you want to change you can do it just by voicing out. Next time, it will be more
efficient and give better results. These devices keep on improving with time as in when
they have substantial data about your preferences to deduce intelligence out of it.

4. Smart TV
These TVs are designed for connected home and are compatible with more than
200 devices and can connect with common devices like Phone, Thermostat, connected
lights and camera (Demirer, Aydin, & Celik, 2017).

5. Coffee machine
There are smart coffee machines in the market that can be fully controlled by the
mobile App. One can schedule the brews and give instruction like after how many
minutes you want your coffee ready, change settings, number of different ingredients and
many more. Also, whenever there is shortage of any ingredient in the machine-like water,
it will also send a notification.

IOT refrigerators have also become very common these days and with the help of
large number of actuators and sensors can tell the number of products and if there is any
shortage, they also have the potential of placing order with the nearest supermarket
(Verhoef, et al., 2017). Though these features are really hard to believe at first, it will be
equally exciting to use them and appreciate the technology in our lives.

Initially, Ducere Techologies has developed footwarea for visually impaired
people. These shoes can guide you towards the destination with the help of vibrations in
your shoes. They work with help of App called Lechal. Currently, Nike also has IOT
enabled shoes that are integrated with Apple smart watch as well as Apple iPhones.
These shoes can record the distance you have traveled, speed at which you are running,
total calories you have burnt and many more insight by reading your pattern.

8. Smart Toothbrushes
Philips and Kolibree are the main players in smart toothbrushes. These
toothbrushes will directly compete with the dentists in a way that these will help the
individual to take care of its teeth in effective way. These brushes will note down your
duration, frequency and brushing habits and areas in your mouth that have been
neglected. They will also tell how well you did each time and remind you about brushing
during your schedule. This will really help in improving the dental health of every
individual.

4 Conclusion
With the above discussion, it can be said that IOT industry is quite fragmented as of now
and there are large numbers of organizations which are involved in IOT related products.
Philips, Nike, Google, Apple, Schneider are looking for developing consumer products in
IOT space, organizations like GE, ABB, CISCO, IBM are producing IOT products that can
be used in different industries like retail, automotive and Technological giants like Google,
Cisco, IBM are working on IT aspects of IOT products (Olsson, Bosch, & Katumba, 2016).
