Task 1
Concept of personal and professional development
Personal development is defined as the growth of one’s personal self in terms of any field which
makes the person grow and develop. Professional development is defined as the growth which is
associated with the career or future earnings in terms of any organization or an enterprise. Both
types of development are equally important because collectively it makes the overall
development of a person as a whole in personal as well as professional also (Taylor, 2017).
Value of short term goals
Short term goals are defined as it contains the duration of accomplishment of maximum six
months to one year only. They are valuable because they are easy to complete, they do not take
much time, creation of momentum is great through short term goals and they help to encourage
in motivation and confidence of achieving such goals. Some examples are, earning any course
certificate, developing reading habits and building up writing skills (Young and Valach, 2019).
Value of medium term goals
Medium term goals are defined as it contains the duration of accomplishment of maximum
one year to three years. They are valuable because it helps the person in gaining the knowledge
which is relevant and be used in a lifetime process either in personal or professional
development. Some examples are, earning the degree of graduation, taking interest in sports
activities and creating social connections with different types of people (Engel, van Burg, Kleijn
and Khapova, 2017).
Value of long term goals
Long term goals are defined as it contains the duration of accomplishment of maximum
three years to ten years. They are valuable because it gives direction to a person, it helps in
creating mission and vision of the career or of the whole life, basically long term goals decides
that where the life will get headed to in the future. Some examples are, taking professional
experience, improving life standard of living and achieving the mentorship (Hirschi, 2018).
