2RESEARCH ANNOTATION AND SHORT PAPER
Introduction
The research topic that is being selected for the study is concerning whether there is wide
availability of areas of employment in tourism. Tourism is a significantly large industry and the
topic will help to find its prospects for career growth concerning the connected employment
opportunities. The analysis of the topic will be done through relevant literatures and the
evidences in support of the main objectives are gathered.
Research Analysis
The development of Tourism as a major industry in the world has facilitated the growth
of many connected employment opportunities. The prospects of career growth and sustainability
through these opportunities need to be essentially analyzed. The industry has also faced some
significant issues recently with accommodation services having to be closed down.
There are certain discussion points that need to be covered. Firstly, the scope for the
growth of employment opportunities in tourism. Secondly, the challenges connected with Human
Resource functions concerning tourism. Thirdly, sustainability of tourism as one of the largest
world industry. Fourthly, motivational factors in the tourism industry. Lastly, the factors that can
affect the areas of employment.
According to Baum (2016) some of the significant issues that the tourism industry is
facing in terms of employment challenges are concerning turnover, recruitment, planning for
succession and promotion. There is no doubt however, that the industry is growing. Recent stats
reveal that the sector has provided 313 million jobs worldwide (www.wttc.org2019). Hence, the
growth can be said to be significant concerning the industry. The challenges that face the
employees in the industry are labor intensive work schedules, sometimes seasonal

unemployment and lack of growth opportunities in some sectors. Some significant aspects that
affects the employee’s motivation in the industry are idealized concepts like being able to travel
the world or catering to the entertainment needs of the people (Lasserre&Têtu, 2015).The
sustainability of tourism is greatly dependent on which part of the world is witnessing more
interest in terms of being a tourism destination. The Caribbean, famous monuments such as the
TajMahal, China and even Canada is witnessing either sustained tourism interest of growth in
tourism (Destination Canada 2019).Some researchers have provided a micro environmental
analysis taking into consideration the thoughts of the employees. Others have focused on the
micro factors affecting the development of the industry. The significant factors that affect
tourism prospects are employee growth prospects, local tourism business prospects and better
work life balance for the employees. A marked shift from the idealized notion of employment in
tourism is required.
Conclusion
In essence, it was found that the tourism industry is affected by both the micro factors
such as employee motivation and macro factors such as growth in tourism activities. The people
that are working in the industry were seen to be guided much by idealistic passions for travel.
The scope of employment growth in the future is good but employees need to be more career
oriented and professional.
Reflection on Research Process
The topic was chosen by me as I wanted to understand all the vital aspects that are related
to the tourism industry. I am interested in the tourism industry of Canada and the world. The
research topic is important as travel is becoming an important factor in the lives of many people

including youngsters. Considering this the prospects of employment in the industry and the
factors that can guide the sustainable growth of employment in the industry need to be found. It
is important to understand how the industry of tourism is shaping up. The relation of the same
with the number of employed people and their career prospects in the industry also need to be
known. As of now the industry has a steady growth rate in the world and can lead to the
establishment of an even stronger tourism industry in the future.
The research process that I undertook relied very much on secondary information that
was gathered from the most relevant sources. Firstly, I did internet surfing to get data that was
relevant to the study. Moving forward I used the internet to know about books and journals that
would be important for the topic. I used the books that were the most relevant. The university
site also helped me to gather essential information. The challenges that I faced was in regard to
the compilation of data and finding out the authenticity of the data that were gathered. If given an
opportunity I would like to choose the topic again. I want to do the research next time with data
gathered directly from the people working at various organizational levels in the industry.
