Chapter 1: Introduction
Background of the Research
The workplace discrimination is based on the prejudices and it occurs when staff
members is treated in an unfavourable manner due to gender, religion, race, disability, age and
some other characteristics. If company treat some person differently due to possess various
characteristics to some other staff members that is unlawful (Attell, Brown and Treiber, 2017).
There is a discrimination arising on the basis of age and this can impact on the employee relation
at workplace. In an organisation, age discrimination is practice of letting age of an individual
unfairly become factor when deciding which receives new job, promotion and some of the other
job advantages. Morrisons is a supermarket in United Kingdom. It was established in year 1899
by William Morrison. In this organisation, there are many employees who are working from the
long period of time and company treat them in a better manner. The effect of discrimination is
not limited to the physical but it develops the mental impacts on staff members consisting
depression, self control loss, developing the anxiety disorders which leading to staff members
becoming hostile. The discrimination has impact on employees as well as working environment
also.
Rationale of Research
Present research taken into consideration on impact of workplace discrimination on
employee relation at workplace. The discrimination negatively influence on the employees
productivity as well as relations at workplace. This reduces the organisational productivity.
Researcher mainly conducts the present investigation from personal and professional context. In
personal manner, researcher wants to enhance the understanding regarding the workplace
discrimination (Baur and et. al., 2018). It can increase the skills and core competencies. On the
other hand, researcher can able to get the understanding about conducting research by
performing all the activities of an investigation. This can help in enhance the professional
understanding of an investigator.
Research Aim

The key aim of this particular research is “To determine the impact of workplace
discrimination on employee relation at workplace.” A study on Morrisons.
Research Objectives
The potential objectives of this particular research that in-consist over this specific area of
study are described as below:
To investigate the influence of workplace discrimination in an organisation.
To determine different strategies applied by company to manage workplace
discrimination within the organisation.
To identify the challenges faced by employees due to workplace discrimination.
Research Questions
The appropriate questions that are interconnected with the specified aim and objectives of the
research are described as under:
What is the influence of workplace discrimination in an organisation?
What kind of different strategies applied by company to manage workplace
discrimination within the organisation?
To identify the challenges faced by workers due to workplace discrimination?
Literature Review
It is main part of research that helps in collecting information by using secondary sources
like articles, internet sources, journals, magazines and others. As per the current research, the key
literature difference is impact of workplace discrimination on employee relation at workplace.
There has been research questions used in order to fulfill literature gap. Such issues relate to
thorough and systematic achievement of research goals and objectives (Berrey, Nelson and
Nielsen, 2017).
Influence of workplace discrimination in an organisation
As per viewpoint of ALISON DOYLE (2019), Workplace discrimination occurs when a
job applicants or worker is to be treated unfavourably due to race, nationality, skin colour, age,
gender and some other characteristics. Discrimination is prohibited in any area of employment
such that discrimination at the workplace goes beyond recruiting and dismissal into
discrimination which may occur to an employee. Unlawful discrimination may also occur when,

in work circumstances such as denial of membership or fair treatments in a trade union or in an
organization, discrimination against any person has an unproportionate impact on a particular
community because of his or her specific requirements. The workplace environment develops the
negative impact on an organization. From the discrimination, poor working environment at
workplace developed and this reduce the productivity of the company. From the discrimination
issue, conflict arises among the employees and managers and this negatively impact on their
relations. It is main reason that the manager should handles the business operations efficiently
and also makes sure that no organization’s gender, race and colour are discriminated against. It
can help boost the company's efficiency levels, while also allowing employees to efficiently
reach their goals.
Age discrimination at workplace happens when age of an individual is unfairly used as
factor in employment. It is practice of letting age of a person when deciding that receives
promotion and some other job related benefits. Termination decisions cannot be based entirely
on their age (Coyne and et. al., 2017). Older workers who claim they have been discriminated
against to help younger workers are typically impacted by age discrimination, but even cases of
younger employees being replaced by older workers have taken place. The old employees have
the more experience as comparison to the new or younger employees. They can give the training
to the new staff members regarding the work and also about the job role.
Different strategies applied by company to manage workplace discrimination within the
organisation
According to viewpoint of Natalia Autenrieth (2020) Workplace discrimination is main
issues for Morrisons Company and this negatively impact on performance level of staff
members. Arising the age discrimination issue leaving the old and experienced employees from
workplace. In regards to this, it is necessary for management to take some appropriate action to
managing the age discrimination at workplace. It is necessary that all staff members of any age
are mainly protected from the age discrimination. There are some of the effective strategies
given below:
Redundancy procedures- Morrison should assure that redundancy policy does not
indirectly or directly discriminate against the old staff members. The right to the mandatory
redundancy pay is not constrained by higher or lower level. If the employees are under 18,
