Rationale
The main reason behind choosing the topic is that this situation is the most recent one and
even the ongoing condition which is faced by each and every person in the world. The business
organisations are the ones who are suffering a lot due to this pandemic of COVID pandemic.
Retail industry in UK is hit the hardest by this pandemic (Chu and Ke, 2017). The companies
need to find various alternatives in order to cope up with this pandemic and the issues faced by
the same. The profitability of the retail firms is the greatest factor which contributes towards the
economy of the country and the nation. If the profitability of the companies is affected by the
pandemic then the complete economy will be destroyed (Roy, Patnaik and Satpathy, 2020). The
companies which can easily cope up with this situation will decide the winners and losers of the
industry which can face the profitability in the long run. This is how, the retail industry of UK is
facing extraordinary crisis. The pandemic affected the supply chains and even the steep selloffs
in the financial crisis. The profitability of the retail firms is depended upon the behaviour of
consumers which is also changing rapidly because of the pandemic as they are hesitating before
going to the stores and making a purchase (Mirza and et.al., 2020). This is because it is must for
conducting a research on such topic which can help the retail firms like Tesco to maintain their
profitability and can facilitate its customers so that the profitability of the company can be
maintained. The secondary reason behind conducting the research is that the consumer’s
behaviour can also be analysed so that the companies can implement such strategy which can
help in satisfying the customers as well as enhancing the profitability (Kurmann, Lalé and Ta,
2020). This will help the other retail firms in UK also and the other researchers who wish to
study about the pandemic and can implement the appropriate strategies.
