Topic: Process mining in learning analytics - benefits and challenges
Koedinger et al. (2015)
1. What is the paper’s reference in the IEEE style?
K.R., Koedinger, S., D'Mello, E.A., McLaughlin, Z.A., Pardos, and C.P., Rose. Data mining and
education. Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews: Cognitive Science, 6(4), pp.333-353, 2015.
2. How did you find the paper? If applicable, write a list of the search terms you used.
At first I searched for process mining in learning analytics using the Google Scholar search tool
using the keywords “process mining in learning analytics”. It is after which I came across the
name of this specific literature paper at the first instance, then I chose the second research paper
I found, which was this paper. I found it at the first instance.
3. Why did you select this paper?
This particular paper researches about the application of mining techniques in education and
addresses it as an emerging interdisciplinary field for research in cognitive science. The paper
also introduces the specific milestones in this regard including the current state of affairs in
educational data mining.
4. Was the paper peer-reviewed? Explain how you found out.
The paper is peer reviewed as this has been presented in the data mining knowledge discovery
article which is presented in numerous research databases.
5. Does the author(s) work in a university or a government-funded research institute? If so, which
university or research institute? If not, where do they work? What does this tell you about their
expertise? Are they an expert in the topic area?
The authors Koedinger works as a full time professor in Carnegie Mellon University for the
subjects of human–computer interaction and psychology. His co-authors in this particular topic
has worked on the introduction of process mining techniques in the educational fields.
6. What was the paper about?
The paper develops the key milestones and introduces them with the current state affairs
including the educational data mining department for presenting insights for specific applications
and tools in cognitive science. Specifically speaking it describes what educational data mining is
all about and why it is using this particular section to be introduced in the field of education.
7. Is this paper similar to other papers you have read for this assignment? If so, which papers and
why?
This paper is not similar to other papers that have been read for this particular assignment as
none of them reviews the key milestone and introduces them in the field of EDM.
8. Is this paper different to other papers you have read for this assignment? If so, which papers and
why?
The paper is different from other papers reviewed in this section since none of them develop the
idea to identify the key milestones in the educational data mining field.
9. What do these similarities and differences suggest? What are your observations? Do you have
any new ideas? Do you have any conclusions?
The similarities and dissimilarities suggests that there are various aspects of the subject about
introducing process mining in education and various departments through which they can be
addressed. My observations clarify that this particular paper has figured out the needs of process
mining and its implementation in the educational fields especially focusing on the data mining
areas. It can be concluded that the author has done justice to the article by focusing not just on
the elaborate topic of process mining in education but to a specific topic of Data Mining
altogether.
10. How do you envisage this reading contributing to your group’s research paper?

The review of this particular research paper would add a lot of value to the following final research
paper as this would cover the aspect of data mining as a part of process mining introduced in
education.

Liñán and Pérez (2015)
11. What is the paper’s reference in the IEEE style?
L.C., Liñán, and Á.A.J., Pérez. Educational Data Mining and Learning Analytics: differences,
similarities, and time evolution. International Journal of Educational Technology in Higher
Education, 12(3), pp.98-112, 2015.
12. How did you find the paper? If applicable, write a list of the search terms you used.
At first I searched for process mining in learning analytics using the Google Scholar search tool
with the keywords “process mining in learning analytics”. I had numerous paper suggestions for it.
It is after which I came across the name of this specific literature paper since it was different from
the one I chose before. Moreover, the search page was endowed with search results, I
immediately chose the next option after the first one.
13. Why did you select this paper?
This paper has been selected since it addresses the other aspect of learning analytics and that
the similarities, similarities and progress through the evolution of time.
14. Was the paper peer-reviewed? Explain how you found out.
This paper can be regarded as peer-reviewed as it has already been publishing through the
universities and knowledge society journal published by RUSC.
15. Does the author(s) work in a university or a government-funded research institute? If so, which
university or research institute? If not, where do they work? What does this tell you about their
expertise? Are they an expert in the topic area?
The author Laura Calvet Liñán works as a part time teacher for the Open University of Catalonia
and she holds a PhD in the subject Network and Information Technologies.
16. What was the paper about?
The paper was about describing the various things that underlining about educational mining and
learning analytics and what their relationship with time evolution follows.
17. Is this paper similar to other papers you have read for this assignment? If so, which papers and
why?
This paper is not similar to the other people that have been reviewed in this regard since none of
the papers addresses the technological progress that it leads through learning analytics being
included in education.
18. Is this paper different to other papers you have read for this assignment? If so, which papers and
why?
This paper is different from the other people that have been read for this assignment since the
paper introduces the basic idea behind the implementation of learning analytics into education.
19. What do these similarities and differences suggest? What are your observations? Do you have
any new ideas? Do you have any conclusions?
The similarities and dissimilarities suggest that this paper is somewhat closer to the other papers
that describe the Data Mining aspects integration in learning, but at the same time is more
specific than the other pages that focus on the broader aspect of the process learning mechanism
as a whole.
20. How do you envisage this reading contributing to your group’s research paper?
The reading of this particular paper would enunciate the research team about a much in-depth
knowledge about the entire subject since it introduces the basic reasons behind implementing
process mining into education.
