ETHICS AUTOBIOGRAPHY 2
Ethics Autobiography Part 1
1. What motivations, values, and virtues are most important to you, as a person, in your
relationships with other people?
The most important motivations in life for me are;

Counselors: A Proactive Approach (1st ed.). Colorado: Blackwell publishing

contribution, love, and connection, growth, happiness and significance (Anderson &
Handelsman, 2010). The values and virtues which I cherish most in life include; honesty,
respect, courage, open-mindedness, compassion, and integrity.
2. What are the origins of these motivations, values, and virtues? Be inclusive. Don’t just
write, “I was born with them.” Take some time to really think about where you might
have learned your values.
These motivations, values, and virtues, mostly originated from my family members, religious

caring (Anderson & Handelsman, 2010) . They always spared their time to educate us on
certain important virtues, value, and motivations of life such as patience, honesty and
determination or growth. I then grew up with the virtues instilled in me. The church and school
also played a major role in their development.
3. How similar are your motivations, values, and virtues to those of other members of the
cultures to which you belong?
By culture, we mean any group of people who share some values, traditions, or ideals. Your
nationality, religion, gender, geographic area, and sexual orientation are all cultures. You can
even think more broadly. Mitch, for example, belongs to the cultures of trumpet players, contact
lens wearers, and full professors.
Most of the motivations, virtues, and values are related. This is because, according to Arthur
there are predominant, essential and static motivations, values and virtues which cannot change
(Arthur, 2015). One has to possess them no matter their culture, in that if they lack them there
will be constant conflicts amongst friends with different cultures. For example, growth, courage,
love, care, respect, and compassion. Unfortunately, no culture can thrive without such
motivations, virtues, and values.
4. What experiences have you had with members of cultures to which you do not belong and
their notions of right and wrong? What feelings did you have about those experiences
and about the members of those other cultures?
My experience with Muslims was unique. I realized that young girls and women grow up in
fear, isolation because of the strict cultural norms. Women are quite insignificant to society as
compared to men. Therefore, the Muslims possess the motivations, virtues, and values because
