Item 1 (Political Cartoon)
Analysis
In the above mentioned cartoon Marlette has represented a particularly grave political
issue. The road that has been drawn in the cartoon projection is actually a metaphor for the road
to success and road to prosperity. The cartoonist might have also thought about embodying the
road to the fulfillment of the American Dream here in the concerned cartoon. The concept of
racism has been thoroughly highlighted as a particular sociological concept in the cartoon.
Moreover, the cartoonist has also depicted an oppressive political environment that prevails in
the United States. Furthermore, it must also be noted that the issue of racial discrimination has
also been pointed out clearly in the concerned cartoon. Marlette has tried to show in the cartoon
how African Americans are still being oppressed in the name of racism and how they are made
scapegoat to political suppressions rendered by the White politicians in particular. It should also
be noted that in the course of depicting the wretched socio-political conditions of the African
Americans in the United States (and particularly in Florida), Marlette has not indulged in the

projection of any kind of bias, neither explicitly or implicitly. It should also be noted that a
liberal ideology has been embodied in cartoon sketch which is thoroughly based on the concept
of political equity and public opinion.
