RESEARCH STRATEGIES
1
The aspect of research is important for any undergraduate student in the globe. Research
includes within itself an idea about the prevailing social situation which the student tries to
understand either through empirical work or by the comprehensive analysis of the various
secondary. The purpose of this paper is to understand the various research strategies which can
be applied in the context of a research paper.
The first research strategy which is used in the context of a study is that of the research
philosophy. There are positivist, interpretivist and pragmatist research philosophies (Silverman).
The positivist research philosophy enables the researcher to take an objective view of the study
while an interpretivist research philosophy allows the researcher to analyze the various
subjective opinions put forth by the previous relevant scholars (Glesne).
The second strategy used in that of research approach. There are two research approaches
such as that of deductive and inductive research approach (Silverman). The deductive research
approach enables the researcher to take in to consideration the existing theories and concepts
before testing out a hypothesis (Taylor, Bogdan and DeVault). In this respect, in my Nursing
School, I was required to take in to consideration the various theories.
The third strategy implemented in the course of a research work is that of research
design. There are exploratory, explanatory and descriptive research design. The exploratory
research design enables the researcher to explore the various reasons for the cause of a particular
phenomenon under scrutiny (Sutton and Austin). The explanatory research design aids the
researcher to explain such causes and consequences of the phenomenon. The descriptive research
design, on the other hand, aids the researcher to combine both aspects of exploratory and
explanatory to conduct a comprehensive research design.
