Research Methodology for Critical Success Factors of Public-Private Partnership Infrastructure Projects in India

This section discusses the research methods used in the study on critical success factors of public-private partnership infrastructure projects in India. Introduction
This section of the study discusses and presents the type of the methods that have
been used in the current study. In order to select the research methods, two case studies have
been considered. One of the case studies is performed on the energy efficiency housing in
South Australia and another case study is a critical assessment of higher education for the
sustainable development from students’ perspectives. So, to select the research methods,
techniques used in the case studies have been reviewed and eventually suitable research
methods have been developed. The topic of the present study is a critical success factors of
public-private partnership infrastructure projects in India. Research particularly investigates
the critical success factors influencing the success of the projects. In addition to this, another
case study carried out on stakeholder management has also been considered for selecting the
research techniques because the research methods used in the paper are largely relevant to the
context of the present study. The following section of this chapter discusses how the case
studies have been considered and why one of the papers have not been deemed good for the
paper.
Reflecting and analysing the case studies
The case study which was carried out on the critical assessment of higher education
for sustainable development provides the insight reading how sustainability issues in higher
education is no exception. This means that practices followed in the higher education causes
the issues related to quality of education. Sustainability in higher education depends on the
quality of education (Yuan and Zuo 2013). This study has particularly been performed to
generate awareness among the students with respect to the sustainability of higher education.
However, it is worth telling that this research paper lack insight about the sustainability of

higher education as the study has only paid attention to the students of Shandong University.
It can be mentioned that education today has been diverse with respect to practices and
quality.
Thus, focussing on one particular segment of education will not provide any suitable
and understandable insight. In addition to this, the research method used in the paper is not
relevant to the requirement of the present study. For example, the authors have used graphical
assessment of Sustainability in the universities in order to generate the outcome. This method
is not relevant to present study because the current study is focussed on real-worlds facts
related to public-private partnership projects. So, to learn about the factors that contribute to
the success of public-private projects, real-world facts and findings are highly important.
Thus, the techniques of this paper has not been considered when selecting the techniques of
the present study. On the other side, the study has been carried out on stakeholder
management in disaster restoration projects performed by Bassam Baroudi talks about
stakeholder management in disaster restoration projects.
It is certain that the making of any project in any department always comes with an
issue or failure but addressing those issues or dealing them effective is a success. This paper
tells about how all stakeholders involved in a project can be managed to deal with a failed
project. Outcome of this study is relevant to the present study as the investigation of the
critical success factors of private public project is required as such projects also have certain
issues and challenges. According to Baroudi and R. Rapp (2014) there is a set of techniques
that are often helpful to rebuild a damaged project and failure or disaster in project is a
common issue which the owners and authorities should not ignore. Authors of this study have
used come existing paper and the review of those papers generate the insight that effort relate
to recovery in terms of repair and re-construction of buildings require government and
community to work in partnership. This means that effective recovery could only take place

if the whole community tends to work behind the effort. Nonetheless, it can be added that the
community should have the capacity and knowledge to go through the require works. So, this
understanding is helpful and relevant to the analysis of critical success factor of private public
partnership project. When performing the analysis, outcome of this paper can be considered.
In addition to this, to learn about the stakeholder management techniques in the restoration of
disaster projects, authors of this study have used primary data collection methods- the real-
world data facts. Authors have perfumed a survey containing important disaster restoration
questions to analyse the issue. So in the present study, considering this method and the idea,
data about the critical success factors can be collected with the help of survey method.
Therefore, this research method is relevant to the current ongoing research project on PPP
infrastructure in India.
Another case study is carried out by Chan and Ma (2016), on energy efficiency
housing in South Australia which is a gap analysis between the expected and actual benefits.
This research paper talks about the importance of sustainable development in the construction
or the housing projects. Authors talk about how housing projects owners should think and
apply the environmental sustainability approaches when developing or implementing the
project. The outcome of the study is relevant to the current research paper because this study
helps to understand the fact that even the PPP project should also think of the environmental
sustainability. The success of PPP projects depends on how the environmental concerns are
addressed. For example, if a housing is railway project has been done successfully but it
greatly causes environmental damages, project is doomed to failure. Moreover, the research
methods used in the paper are primary. Thus means that data has been collected from
particular respondents who have knowledge regarding the projects. Before engaging the
respondents into the data collection process, authors of the study have used ethical check list
form to select the respondent on the basis of their will.

Data Collection method
In order to analyse the critical success factors of public-private partnership infrastructure
projects in India, primary data analysis methods have been applied. The following section
discusses the type of data that have been used in the study and how they are applied to the
study.
Primary data collection method: It has been identified that primary data is the data that have
not been used anywhere before. Thus means that the primary data is first-hand information
that are fresh and collected from the respective individuals who have knowledge about the
context of the study. Primary data collection method is usually divided into two different
categories namely quantitative data collection and qualitative data collection method.
However, in the present study only qualitative data collection method has been used.
Qualitative Data collection method: It has been identified that qualitative data does not
include numbers digits and any sort of mathematical calculation. Qualitative data is majorly
concerned with voice, sound, emotions and behavioural approaches of the individuals who
take part in the data collection process. The major method of collecting qualitative data is that
it uses interviewee method. So, in the present study, to collect the qualitative data, an
interview method has been applied.
