CE 2.1 Project Information Name of the Project: Construction of 18 ft Wide Road in Zone 6 of Bathinda City Location of the Project: Zone 6, Bathinda, Punjab Project Duration: From December of 2016 to February of 2018 Organization: Jagjit Singh Dhillon Contractor Role and Designation during the time: Site Engineer CE 2.2 Project Background CE 2.2.1 Characteristics of the project Jagjit Singh Dhillon Contractor is one of the popular organizations in Punjab. They have done several significant projects regarding constructions and have been helpful to the citizens of this state. I got the opportunity to work with them in a project of constructing 18ft wide road in Zone 6 of Bathinda city as a site engineer. In this project, we had to construct a road of length of 12 km in Zone 6 within Bathinda city. We started our work from earthwork and completed the project within 14 months. This particular road of 12 km was built in severallayers, which areearthwork tofulfillthedepressionand also toprepare the preliminary base. I even provided 230 mm of GSB or granular sub base and 250 mm of WMM or wet mix macadam. I have also used on top layering of 40 mm BC or Bituminous concrete. I have followed all the above mentioned steps for building the road work. AutoCAD software was used to make the drawing and detailing of reinforcement and ETABS software helped us in analyzing as well as designing of this road.

CE 2.2.2 Objectives developed for the project The project for constructing this 12 km road in Bathinda city was one of the major projects in my professional career. With my basic knowledge in core civil engineering, I had to complete my tasks that were assigned to me. To make the project more effective and efficient, the following objectives were developed by me: ï‚·To construct a wide road of length 12 km or 18ft in Zone 6 of Bathinda city. ï‚·To complete the entire project from earthwork to the finishing of road with proper efficiency. ï‚·To build the 12 km road in several layers like earthwork, 230 mm GSB, 250 mm WMM, 60 mm DBM and 40 mm BC. ï‚·To undergo several tests like sieve analysis or cube testing to test the compressive strength of the concrete. ï‚·To use ETABS software for proper analysis and designing of the road to be constructed. ï‚·To use AutoCAD software for drawing as well as reinforcement detailing of the project. ï‚·To compare the results that were obtained from ETABS software with manual methodology. ï‚·To maintain safety and security within the project by applying certain precautions in the work. CE 2.2.3 My area of work I was appointed as the site engineer in this project, since I had much experience in these projects. Being an experienced site engineer, I had to offer advice regarding the proper planning, coordinationaswellassupervisionofthetechnicalaspectsofthisroad construction. I even have worked with contractors and hence I even had the duty to select the
Managing Director Project Head (Technical) Finance Manager (Non Technical) Site Engineer Technical (Me)SupervisorSupervisor contractor of this project and I have selected Jagjit Singh Dhillon here as they were one of the best contractors in Bathinda. I was also assigned for completing the structural designing of the road and to determine the project costs. CE 2.2.4 Project Group Figure 1: People involved in the project CE 2.2.5 My responsibilities throughout the project In this project, my major responsibility was to check the proper compaction of the several materials that were laid on the roads to be constructed. I even had to provide the appropriate camber within the road surface and also to manage the staffs or workers efficiently and effectively. With my knowledge in AutoCAD software, I had to make the drawings and then document the details regarding reinforcement. Since, this road was one of the major links in Zone 6, I had to make the planning properly. I even had to design the various structural elements like slabs and beams. With the help of ETABS software, I made
the detailed analysis as well as design of the road. I even did the load testing for analyzing the soil used here with SAP2000 software. CE 2.3 Distinctive Activity CE 2.3.1 Comprehending the Theory of Project I have used the theory of structural planning and advanced construction. I had to start from earthwork until the finishing of the road. The carpet of the road was to be premixed and the road was to be built in several layers. The most significant steps that I have followed here are given below: i) Undertaking earthwork for filling the respective depression and even for preparing the base of the road. ii) The second step that I have followed here is to provide 230 mm of granular sub base or GSB. iii) Next, I provided 250 mm of wet mix macadam or WMM. iv) The fourth step in this process is to lay 60 mm of dense bituminous macadam or DBM. v) The final step in the process is on top layering of 40 mm of bituminous concrete or BC. I checked the pavement composition and understood that the pavement is to be composed with wearing course, binder course, base course and sub-base course over the soil subgrade. The base course was laid with paver finisher and motor grader. On the other hand, the materials that were being utilize for the granular sub-base course must be having the respective CBR value lesser than 30%.

CE 2.3.2 Engineering knowledge and skills applied in the project The main skill, used here is advanced construction and design analysis. These skills helped me in providing the proper plan of the road to be constructed. To plan the design of this road, I have applied my knowledge of material science as well as engineering. For testing the soil, I have utilized my understanding of hydraulic structure designing. My skills of AutoCAD software and ETABS software were also used here for drawings and structural analysis. Moreover, I have also applied my knowledge of SAP2000 software for load testing. CE 2.3.3 Accomplishment and Task Performed I have accomplished the task by making the report on soil survey. I had conducted few tests such as direct shear and shear parameter and hence obtained density, water content and angle of shearing resistance. Table 1: Soil Survey Report Regarding the software designing, I have used ETABS software to minimize the total time required to analyze as well as design the road. Moreover, for powerful and intuitive GUI, that was to be coupled with the modelling or analytical processes, I eventually integrated this with the help of ETABS software. Furthermore, I have also converted these
CAD drawings within ETABS models. To complete the 3D modelling of the road, I have utilized software of SAP2000. CE 2.3.4 Identified issues and their solutions 2.3.4.1 Issues I faced a major issue during excavating the road and preparing the base. During this period, the pipe of water supply got cracked and we had to shut down the water supply of the entire area. This created a major problem for all the citizens of Zone 6 in Bathinda city. The second significant issue that I have faced here was while the analysis of 3D modelling of the road. The diagram of shear force was not appropriate and thus the outcome was erroneous. The third issue faced here was during the soil analysis. The soil survey report did not provide accurate density. 2.3.4.2 Solutions I gave the suggestion to my project team to replace the water supply pipe by significantly transferring the ample leaked water to the sewerage system. This easily resolved our issues and thus our project did not face any more delays. For the next issue, I decided to do the shear force diagram myself and hence was successful in making it perfectly. For the third issue, I corrected the errors and got appropriate density of 13.2 KN/m3. CE 2.3.5 Plan to produce creative and innovative work To execute this particular project of Construction of 18 ft Wide Road in Zone 6 of Bathinda City, I had to make a distinct plan for producing excellent designs as well as works. Being one of the responsible civil engineer by profession, it was my core duty to make the design for the road construction with appropriate efficiency and accurateness.

CE 2.3.6 Collaborative Work Iprovided suggestions to my team for working altogether for the reason that it becomes stress-free for each of us to make the project successful. I then distributed the various tasks equally within my other members of the team and undertook daily work follow ups. CE 2.4 Project Review CE 2.4.1 Project Overview I completed this project of road construction after providing a proper planning of the 12 km road with several software like AutoCAD, ETABS and SAP2000 and hence made the drawings properly. I had to use my understanding and knowledge of Sieve analysis for soil testing. CE 2.4.2 My Contribution to work My role in the project was Site Engineer. I planned the entire construction of this project and even for solving the various issues faced by us. The carpet of the road was premixed in this project and hence the work was done properly. Various tests like shear tests and shear parameter were also done by me.
