CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
Overview of the topic
E-commerce is considered as the method which is used for buying and selling of goods
and services taking the mediator of internet. This is associated with the use of internet, computer,
laptops or mobiles. E-commerce is referred as different online activities which involved usage of
internet in order to buy and sell different product or services. In the context of UK retailer, this is

company is selling verity of merchandise including food and apparel. The company is providing
e-commerce facilities to their customers so that to reach out to potential customers in order to
deal with market competition.

Franchising- It is used describe as an arrangement where the company (franchisor)
grants or licenses some authorities and rights to another company (franchisee).
Digital economy- It is also a most emerging trend that defined as an economy that
focuses on using digital technologies that are based on digital and computing technologies.
E-commerce – This emerging trends means selling and buying products and service
through internet (Maama and Appiah, 2019). It helps company to reach all over the world more
easily in order to provide their products and services.
Aggregator- It is a website or application that are used to amalgamated homogeneous or
content from the internet. It makes easier for the end consumer for navigating as well as finding
the required information from the web.
The role played by the emerging modern practices within the working space of Asda
In the opinion of Palumbo (2020) it has been analysed that the emerging modern
practices play very important role in enhancing the business performance and productivity within
the workplace of company. The role play by the emerging modern practices within the work
place of the company are described below:
Creating more effective process- Emerging modern practices involved various
advanced and digital technology that create effective process in the workplace. This effective
process help company to produce their products and service more effectively.
Cost effective research and development- Emerging technologies help company to
create more effective as well as less costly research and development processes in their
workplace (Kumar, 2020). New technologies like quantum computing, photonic computing and
many more allow companies to identify the new ways to research and break down information
and other business processes.
Expanding market share- Through emerging trends help company to research more
about their target market as well as offer more effective product and service to them. This leads
increase in market share as well as gain competitive advantage.
Creating more value- Emerging modern practices help company to create more value
for their business. By using new technology, company can understand their target customers’
needs and wants and produce their products according to them. It leads more customer
satisfaction and value in the business (Chaudhary, 2019).

The challenges which were faced by Asda in absence of emerging modern business practices
within their organisation
According to the view of Büyüközkan and Göçer (2018) emerging modern business
practices are important for the company as it helps them to operate their business more
effectively and gain various advantages in the business. Its absence in the business creates many
challenges for the company. Some of the challenges are described below:
Less productivity- Emerging modern practices brings new technology that help
employees to perform their job in better manner. But its absence in the business many affects
their productivity and they are able to perform their job more effectively.
Lack of competitive edge- Today's competitive environment is very stiff and use of
emerging modern practices are important for the company to achieve competitive advantage
(Chege and Wang, 2020). In the absence of emerging modern business practices within the
organisation may leads lack of competitive advantage where the company has to face strong
competition in market.
More operational cost- Implementation of new and trending technology help company
to make their operations smoother and effective as well as decrease their operational cost. When
the company is lacked to implement these technologies in their business may increase their
operational cost and decrease their profitability.
Inefficiency in gaining market growth and success- Today's market is more demanding
and seek more trending and innovative products and services. Emerging modern business
practices help company to fulfil their demands (Rosa, Sassanelli and Terzi, 2019). But its
absence may create problem for the company due which they found inefficiency in gaining
growth and success in the market.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
It is the systematic process that identify, gather and analyse the information for the study.
Using this part right kind of data for the study is being used to attain aim and objective in
accurate manner (Joseph, Skibsted and Cizer, 2019). The validity and reliability of the research
also depend upon the kind of data used in the investigation. Research methodology is divided
into sub parts which are discussed below:
Research philosophy: It is the set of belief used to describe the phenomenon through which
data for the study would be gathered and analysed. There are three kinds of research philosophy
that are positivism, interpretivism and realism (Harrison, 2020). As per the current investigation
researcher has opted for positivism research philosophy. The main benefit to use this is objective
data is used to understand the social world. This quantitative data also helps in analysing the
pattern and trend in the society.
Research approach: This is the second stage in which hypothesis or theories of the
investigation is being tested. They are being evaluated to address the research problem in
significant manner. research approach is classified into two parts that are inductive and
deductive (Maxwell, 2019). In the current investigation, investigator has opted for deductive
research approach. The reason is that quantitative data in numerical manner is used to address the
problem. That also identify the true and valid result for the investigation.
Research strategy: Research strategy is a step by step procedure that identify the direction
for gathering idea and thoughts of the researcher. Using this strategy right and appropriate data
for study is being accumulated for the study (Stanley, Wilson and Milfont, 2021). There are
different kind of research strategy that are survey, experimental research, case study, grounded
theory and many more. In the present investigation, investigator has selected survey research
strategy. The reason is that using survey numerical data is being collected easily. It is also a cost
saver and time saver approach. As data can be gathered from pool of applicant in single go.
Research choice: Quantitative, qualitative and mixed are the three research method through
which data can be collected and analysed for the study. Using the research method investigator
get to know the type of data need to be gathered for the study. In the present research report,
examiner has chosen quantitative research method (Haardörfer, 2019). This is because it helps in
accumulating numerical data for the study. Data is in numbers, figure and values that helps in
carrying the investigation in valuable manner.

Time horizon: It is the time framework that helps in knowing the point at which
information need to be extracted. Cross sectional and longitudinal are the two-time horizon.
According to the current investigation, investigator has chosen cross sectional. This is because it
gathered data for the one time as well as in shorter duration (Basta, Serror and Marzouk, 2020).
Data collection: There are two source through which data for the study is being collected
that are primary and secondary data. According to the existing investigation, investigator has
opted primary data collection source (Kintigh, 2022). This is because it helps in gathering fresh
data for the study. First-hand information is being accumulated which is directly collected by the
researcher. The source for collecting primary data for the study is questionnaire. Through
questionnaire real time information is being extracted for the study.
Data analysis: Data analysis is the method which evaluate, analyse and inspect data for the
study. This is the technique through which raw data is inspected to gather useful information. As
per the research the data analysis technique which is used to inspect the numerical information is
frequency distribution method. using this quantitative data is represented in table and graphs
(Bruce, Pope and Stanistreet, 2018).
Sampling: Sampling is the method that helps in taking out sample for the study. Probability
and non-probability are the two sampling technique. In the current study, investigator has opted
for probability sampling method (Williams, Earls and Hecht, 2021). The reason is that it helps in
selecting applicants in fair and rational manner. simple random sampling is used so that every
participant get chance of being selected. The sample size is 30 employee of Asda.
Research ethics: Research ethics is the set of principles and values which are followed
while gathering data. These are followed so that data is obtained in ethical manner as well as
vicious conduct can be minimised. Some of the ethics which is followed in the current
investigation is Informed consent form, honesty, flexibility, openness, and confidentiality
(Marks, Kelley and Galbraith, 2022).
