ROLE OF GOVERNANCE IN HEALTHCARE ORGANIZATIONS1
Introduction
The study is focused essentially towards investigating the role of governance in
determining the performances of Healthcare Organizations. The governing board, the supporting
role of internal consulting and CEO performance intervention strategies are the specific focus
areas for the study. The combined effort of all these factors towards determining performance
would be analysed.
Analysis of internal consulting
Internal consulting is an important functional aspect of healthcare organizations. It
provides essential support to the governing board of the HCOs. The functional aspects can
broadly be divided into three parts. Firstly, the support provided to the entire organization,
Secondly, supporting projects for improvements. Thirdly, supporting capital investment reviews.
The internal consulting also assists operating units to identify and subsequently prioritize the
capital opportunities (White & Griffith, 2010). They also develop capital requests and implement
and integrate the various programs. In essence the internal consulting is very much concerned
with bringing about changes in the facilities, equipment and the other work processes. Internal
consultancy also interacts effectively with the clients of the HCOs to help them concerning their
requirements. In essence, the internal consulting looks after many of the essential functions that
are significant focuses for the Governing board. The consulting helps the governing body to
make better decisions in regards to the effective running of the board. The internal consulting
through its various functions help to improve the performance of the significant operational areas
of the organization. Their functions are important for maintaining proper coordination between
the governing board and the operations of the HCOs.

Evaluation of governing board functions
The governing board is one of the highest decision making bodies of the healthcare

significant sub-functions of the boards within these mentioned functions. In essence, the board is
concerned with the effective management of the higher level functional aspects concerned with
the HCO. Maintaining the management capability is one of the most important functions of the
board. The board selects the CEO and after a certain period of time reviews the contribution
made by the person towards the organization. Within this functional aspect there is also the
formation of the policies to recruit, develop and compensate the managers. The governing board
takes care of the growth oriented factors such as expansion or closure, affiliation to local or
regional governing bodies and maintaining effective relations with the various significant
stakeholders (Olvera et al., 2017). Hence, the larger functional effectiveness of the organization
depends on the performance of the board.
Comparison and contrast of CEO performance intervention
One of the most important approaches for CEO performance intervention is evaluation of
contribution of the CEO towards the HCOs growth. In this intervention approach the growth
statistics that have been achieved by the organization during the times of the CEO are assessed.
This helps to understand the effectiveness of the CEO towards the growth and development of

contribution of the CEO towards the vision of the organization. How much the CEO has been
