1. The Finch family
The chaos and the quirkiness of the Finch family is quite visible through the instances
of Dr. Finch who is a psychiatrist in the field of mental health. He treats the Burroughs family
and this very instance has provided a remarkable example of unethical profession and
incompetence (Burroughs, 2006). Throughout the story, his treatments has been bizarre and
his limits are seen as non existent. Indeed, it has been apparent that Dr. Finch is the craziest
of all the characters or rather much sicker than any of the clients he attends or treats.
2. Deirdre
Dierdre has been portrayed as an amateur poet who travels to places like coffee
houses to spread or convey her poetries through oral readings. She aspires to become a well
known persona, that is, a poet. But the novel protrays her as stressed and frustrated as has not
achieved fame what she believes that she deserves (Burroughs, 2006). The extremist traits are
highlighted through her psychotic outburst and poetry readings. This further turned her to
seek help from unusual psychiatrist, Dr. Finch. The more I delved deeper with the developing
relationship between Deirdre and Dr. Finch, the greater was the reverberation of the mixed
effects of love and psychosis. thereby, the novel reflects the scenes where Deirdre cycles
through lovers and psychotic outbursts.
3. Neil Bookman
Neil Bookman is the lover of Augusten. He is twenty years older than Augusten and
persuades him into having their first sexual experience. The reverberation of extremism starts
from this very scene, that is, as the story proceeds, Neil becomes obsessed and possessive
with Augusten (Burroughs, 2006). In the course of their relationship, Augusten is witnessed
