Safety Score Improvement Plan for Beaumont Hospital
The professionals and the experts engaged in nursing and healthcare of the patients play a key
role in maintaining the culture that provides quality care as well as patient safety in an
organization associated with healthcare of the people. Their role of addressing the issues
related to patient safety will further be discussedin the example of Beaumont Hospital. The
stated hospital is a multispecialty hospital located in Michigan in the United States with more
than 3000 beds.The hospital reports its data according to its performance to the Hospital Safe
Score, which is anon-governmental organization helps in ranking the hospitals according to
their rate of safety.
There is an alarming rise in the safety score for the surgical unit of the Beaumont Hospital
because of the number of injured patients being admitted to the hospital due to various types
of accidents they are meeting in their daily lives. The negative score might cause hamper to
the image of the hospital, because the unit has not been able to provide the patients with
required treatment and many have reported to have developed new infections due to improper
care. The nurse who looks after and manages the working of the organization has been given
the duty of identification of the problems, determine safety score improvement plan that are
based on evidences and devising a measurable and long term solutions for the arising issues
of safety. The problem that is being faced by the patients visiting the hospital has been
interviewed and details regarding the problems have been found where most of the patients
who had undergone surgeries reported to have developed new infections post the successful
completion of the surgeries.

Factors behind Patient Safety Issue
Presently as more and more patients are developing co-infections post surgery, the issue has
been one of the most reported incidents in terms of patient safety. In the opinion of Ulrich&
Kear(2014), the development of new infections, especially those spread easily are a serious
problem in nursing and healthcare as these results in permanent loss or dysfunction of certain
parts of the body and even death. According to the systems theory, the adverse events in
healthcare practices such as development of the new infections due to improper use of
surgical instruments and other such accidents in the hospital and health care organizations are
related to the quality of care that are being provided by these professionals.These are done at
the frontline of the operations such as the professionals of nursing (Chassin, Mayer& Nether,
2015).
The healthcare experts have completely relied on the systems theory as well as on other
thinking perspectives for analyzing the incidences of the safety issues as a challenge for the
discipline and practice of nursing. The theory further states that the problems in any of the
part of a system, for instance, the nursing department in health care centers affects the
functioning of the hospital as a whole (Kapuret al., 2015).Therefore, most of the larger
systems of organization need to be considered while the changes are being implemented in
the profession of nursing for improving the safety issues.
Influence of Leadership for Patient Safety
The leaders or the nurses at the Beaumont Hospital are important factor systems in driving
the changes both at the clinical and organizational levels. The leadership styles and practices
is the most important in achieving better outcomes and experiences of the patients visiting the
hospital. A study represented that the relational styles of leadership that focused mainly on
the people and their relationship helped in improving the outcome and experiences of the
